Nice. Wonder if Orr is still a take?

Here is our free story on him. He told me minutes ago that UW is a perfect fit and he plans to enroll early.

Seems like a very nice player....maybe a bit underrated? Love the EE aspect.

Nick Thomas, 6'-2" MLB, 215#, recent MVP (position) at a Florida football camp.  Sounds like he is an under the radar find and is greatly impressed with Madison's air of a great football town, and beautiful.  With his size and as a middle linebacker, he seems to be indicative of Coach Andersen's desire for smaller, faster defensive players.  Go Badgers and welcome aboard Nick Thomas!biggrin

This guy isn't faster than the linebackers we have had over the recent years.

Coaches must really like him to offer him out of camp, but other than that it's kind of strange. His parents must be loaded because IMG is frightfully expensive. Tuition and board is $70,000 a year.

Other sites have his 40 listed in the 4.6's which is certainly faster than a lot of linebackers we've had.

The combine numbers are the real numbers, not self reported hand times at other websites.

Re: Nick Thomas, LB from FL commits to Wisconsin

Nice! I was alerted by an article at nj.com (Star-Ledger) that Wisconsin was expecting a commitment today. I was surprised to discover that one of their sports columnists does a regular update on B1G recruiting: http://www.nj.com/rutgersfootb...conference.html

This kind of coverage almost certainly will help B1G members recruit in the state by keeping all the B1G schools in the consciousness of athletes/coaches/parents. Nice exposure.
These ARE the Good Old Days.

Other papers around the US have far better college football coverage than the locals sometimes drudging coverage. Especially off season stuff and recruiting

Relax. He's still in high school. A 4.87 for an incoming senior linebacker is nothing to turn a blind eye to.

Thomas picked the Badgers over offers from Hawaii and Nevada and "interest" from Duke, Kansas, Miami and Syracuse.

God I hope I'm wrong but we lived through a horrible time when a coach continued to recruit the same mid-level players he recruited at his previous mid-level school...hopefully this young man is a true sleeper.

Nick Thomas looks good on film (better than Cizauskas and Whalen did as juniors), has an elite SPARQ score, and holds a mid three star rating. I understand that he isn't a flashy name and doesn't have a big offer sheet but, with his skills and athleticism and four open spots at inside linebacker, this kid is a take every day of the week and twice on Sunday.

Edit: For those that are concerned about taking a sleeper prospect this early in the cycle, it may help to think about things from this perspective: Do you think UW was going to land four inside linebackers better than Nick in this class?
Sure...I'll take a look.

The scout review I read said good against straight up runs but tends to take poor angles and not sure in pass coverage.

Did you have the same bed-wetting issue when we signed Borland and Jacob Pedersen?

The counterpoint is that for every Pedersen and Borland, there's at least one Zach Davidson and T.J Williams to balance things out. The difference between Nick Thomas and many of our sleeper signees, though, is that Nick doesn't appear to have the glaring holes in his game that make everyone wonder what the hell the coaching staff saw in him.

Nick looks like a solid prospect who, for some reason, was missed by many of the larger schools. He isn't one of the classic head scratchers that clearly lacks the requisite athleticism, is too raw and lacks football skills, or, possibly worst of all, seems to have the tools but was never productive players, even at the high school level.
Sure...I'll take a look.

My point is it's laughable when posters continually chide the staff for what they're doing in recruiting when they (the posters) have absolutely no idea what is going on.  GA has a strong proven track record of turning a doormat USU program into big competitor going toe-to-toe with teams like Auburn, Oklahoma, Wisconsin, Utah, etc.  It's not just Borland/Pedersen.  We were also the first to jump on Hudson before UGA and Mizzou came calling.  And although it's fine to discuss a specific recruits pluses and minuses, some posters just have nothing good to say about ANYTHING.  And we know who those people are.  I guess they just think it's funny to have their little shtick on a message board, or they're 13 years old or something.  I'm surprised more of these posters are making millions of dollars as high level college coaches or NFL talent evaluators.

Re: Nick Thomas, LB from FL commits to Wisconsin

The ultimate counterpoint is that GA and Aranda are far more qualified and experienced to coach/recruit than LizWaters.

The only basis for questioning this commit is his star-rating and lack of other offers.

The premise that fans and/or recruiting services know more than coaches is fascinating.

The former is innate, the latter can be coached.

Re: Nick Thomas, LB from FL commits to Wisconsin

Just saw his film. Big fan of this one. Great ILB. Fills the hole, takes on and gets off blocks, runs plenty well and great tackling technique and instincts on the run.  It was a highlight film granted but I didn't see him taking one bad angle.  I also like that the staff is clearly not relying on recruiting services rankings or whether other schools are interested.  The number of quick offers around the country to high profile recruits had me a little nervous that they may be a little lazy on evaluation.  No longer concerned.

4.87 is plenty fast for an inside LB. As long as he can get 20 pounds and stay that fast he'll be fine.

Nick Thomas
- Nick Davis and Joe Thomas - two pretty good Badgers.

Yep, he'll fit.

It takes two to miscommunicate effectively.
