How many of our members have ever been recruited?

How many of our members have ever been recruited?

Just a silly question. But figured I'd try and find out a little more about some subscribers here. Have any of you ever been recruited for collegiate athletics? Recently? Past decade? 20 years? What are some of your stories?

Could provide some cool insight to the whole process..

And don't be afraid to say who recruited you, or why, as I'm sure your stories are far greater than most on here..

Re: How many of our members have ever been recruited?

When I was a sophomore I heard from a bunch of D3 schools in the state with River Falls being the big one.  I still remember Coach O'Grady and his glasses at the River Falls football camps.  Our high school coach wasn't good at letting us know what was going on.  I don't have any great stories because my grades were terrible, and I was worn out on sports.  Nothing on the D-1 level, but that's expected considering the conference I was in with the grades I had.

I got a letter from UM crookston. It was the funniest thing because they sent me a newspaper clipping that talked about a victory from the previous year... their only victory. I sent a tape to o'grady at UWRF and was on the team a couple years.

I heard from about a dozen schools (mostly D3) for a different sport (swimming) back when i was in HS (early 80's). Recruiting was very different then - almost all were letters or folders explaining the virtues of their school and asking me to visit. It seemed like I didnt know most of the schools that contacted me - schools like Coe College, RIT, etc but it was kind of cool to see who all sent me stuff.

I had a few schools looking at me for Cross Country but I hated running. I might run once during the week and would show up for the meets.......my coach hated me for that. I had natural talent, but no motivation. One of the guys I ran with in high school ran for Minnesota and now his kid just recently verballed to Wisconsin. Minnesota thought for sure he would go there and we're disappointed/pissed he didn't. He won the state XC meet this year and finished 8th at both the Nike National and the Foot Locker National.

I was offered by Missouri, Illinois, Miami (Fl), The Naval Academy, and Johns Hopkins for baseball. Decided against playing sports in college and attended UW instead. While I often wonder "what if", I can't say I regret my decision at all. Loved being a Badger and Love being a Badger Alum!

Visited Wisconsin four times, Indiana and Minnesota once along with numerous contact from FCS schools for football but after one torn quad and two hamstrings I ended up at a D3 school. noidea  Was a great experience I won't forget though.

RE: How many of our members have ever been recruited?

I was recruited by most of the D3 schools in the state and a few in the Twin Cities as a linebacker. I sent out emails to several of the schools I was interested in prior to my senior year to get myself on the radar. As my senior season progressed I visited 3 WIAC schools and 2 in the MWC. At that time, they didn't really do overnight visits so none of them ever got too crazy. Several other schools sent coaches to our high school, some to recruit specific players, others to recruit any kids the coaches told them were college-worthy. The school I ultimately committed had their O coordinator and D line coaches call me at least twice a week for 2 months and really got to know me. They were also the school I had always watched as a kid, so I was jacked to play for them.
Once we got there, they started allowing overnight visits. That was when things got nuts. More than a few recruits spent the second day of their visit nursing what was likely the worst hangovers of their lives. It didn't seem to help us land any of those kids but it was a very good time.

RE: How many of our members have ever been recruited?

I was recruited by public accounting firms. I was a 3 star plan B recruit. Got wined and dined, but still had a lack of interest. I dreamt of going Big 4, but had trouble catching attention from middle of the pack firms. Applied several places but only received interviews at 2 Big 4 firms, and one local firm.

I connected with one of the Big 4 firms I was rejected an interview from originally, and took a tour of their office. Spoke with several people and got their contact info. Thanked them, but was candid with HR by mentioning that I wasn't selected for an interview for a winter internship, but I was interested in their firm and was wondering if they would have summer internship possibilities.  (I thought I had no chance at a Winter internship as people already received and accepted offers, and that the start date was about a month away)

Got contacted for a phone interview for a WINTER internship couple days later, and an interview with the partner a few days after that. Ended up getting the offer the next day(day before thanksgiving), and accepting it on the spot. Definitely was late in the game, as the internship was a month away. A signing day offer if you will. Worked out great. Got hired full time, and love my job/office. Now I get to see the other side of the recruiting process. Very happy to have that behind me.

RE: How many of our members have ever been recruited?

I thought it was interesting the strategies the firms took. One of the big 4 firms I interviewed with was trying to be the Alabama of the world. They took on the most recruits from my school. I think a total of 8 or 9, while the other 3 took around 3-4. They ended up processing those kids as only 2-3 were hired full time, a few didn't receive offers, and a couple didnt like their culture. Ironically a lot of the kids that didnt receive full-time offers were 5 star A list recruits, and part of the reason why I got my internship was because they turned down the firm.   There is no doubt they could have been successful if given the opportunity.   Everyone in my internship class received an offer and is better off in life because of it.

Other interesting thing was that the firm that processed the kids were breaking all the rules the firms agreed upon going into the recruitment process such as quiet periods, and periods where they could offer.  Unethical in recruitment, and screwed over the kids in the end.  Seems to be a familiar storyline.

It was sort of like football recruiting in a way. Lesson is that you should go to a place with a culture you enjoy, high ethical standards, and a place that gives you the opportunity to succeed and develop.

Could have played at a D2 or D3 school for football. Thought UW would be a much better fit so I ended up there. Can't say I regret it!

These are some interesting perspectives.. thanks for contributing

and Wettle, my highschool coaches hated me for similar reasons. I'd show up for games, but then practice rolls around.. i guess i had trouble balancing the practice with school sometimes and actually worked more on school.. crazy, I know.

Do you count being asked to walk on to the UW baseball team "being recruited?"  tongue

Recruited by about 10 schools to play D1 baseball.

Could have played D2 football no problem, maybe even for a smaller D1 program.  My coaches made it clear I was going the baseball route, so who knows what would have happened.

Re: How many of our members have ever been recruited?

Recruited by all the Wisconsin D3 schools minus Whitewater and La-X...also a bunch of Iowa, Illinois and other random D3 schools. Went to Carthage and played two years and decided 3 O-coordinators in 2 years and the time commitment made it no longer fun (played WR fyi).  Still, my last year we were apart of the best team in school history and it was a very special season...no regrets with the private school debt (most days anyways).

Recruited by 6-10 D3 schools for football.  La Crosse, Eau Claire, St. Norbert, WI Lutheran, and Lakeland are the only ones I can remember.  Ended up playing a few years at La Crosse before calling it quits from chronic injuries.

Actually had in school visits from Lax, Lutheran and St. Norbert and received calls from all of them.  Kind of cool at the time.  That was back in '04.

Re: How many of our members have ever been recruited?

I received letters in the late 80's asking to try out and be a walk-on in baseball for some D1 schools including Wisconsin, Ohio State, and Arizona State among others.  There weren't any scholarships involved and the only one who came to look at me was Coach Land.  I went to Wisconsin and the tryout didn't go all that well.  We parted ways, I joined the band, and the rest is history.  wink

I've tagged along on visits by recruits when they came to the UW for visits.  Had many friends on the football team in the early 80's

RE: How many of our members have ever been recruited?

Was not recruited by any major university only D3 in the 80's and played three years, but my daughters boyfriend a few years ago was a major Pac 10 commit and played for a team in the Pac 10. Went to the First Under Armour all star game in Orlando with him and his father as he was invited. Met a lot of NFL players from that All Star game. But his recruiting was pretty intense. Actual did an unofficial to UW and met BB. Said he went into his office with his father and BB was in shorts and Hawaii type shirt, and had the music blasting in the office. No shoes on, but he said he thought he was OK. I went oh great! Wisconsin was his first offer his senior year.

I do not feel it would be right to tell stories except for the above, but it was an experience.

Re: How many of our members have ever been recruited?

Back in the late 1960s, I did really well at the state ski meet (alpine) and thought I was the next Jean-Claude Killy.  I put together the news clippings from the local
and regional newspapers and send that out to U of New Hampshire, U. of Vermont,
and the University of Colorado and a couple of others long forgotten.  One day, I got a package in the mail from Boulder and call followed.  I was offered!  It was a huge boost to my ego, but the offer would not have even paid for books.  I wouldn’t
have gone to Boulder anyway, I was too cardinal and white.

Re: How many of our members have ever been recruited?

Was recruited by a number of junior hockey teams in my high school years.  I was a good player, but didn't see myself going pro or ever getting paid for playing, nor did my parents, as they would not allow me to go elsewhere to play.  Felt the exposure to bigger hockey would take away from my education.  I then was recruited by a few small colleges at the Wisconsin Senior Class hockey tournament, but nothing from anyone major.

After HS, my parents and I agreed that if I were not drafted in the USHL that I would move on and simply focus on school.  I was told by a couple of teams that they would take me, however, I was never drafted.  Went on to Whitewater, where I played D1 club hockey, which ended up being a much higher level of hockey than I ever expected.  So, in the end, I got my education and was able to have a lot of fun playing some decent college hockey.

Recruited to Punt by both Whitewater and Platteville but never played in college.

My sister recruited to play small D1 BBall and D 2 Volleyball.  Ended up at Truman State for Basketball.

Did you grow up around the area?  I am from River Falls and had the same experience as far as high school coaching staff.
