Are you guys winning the west this year?

I believe you lost a lot of starters, right?  I also believe you get Nebraska at home.  I wonder if they're due to finally beat you guys.  noidea  Anyway, how do you feel about your team this year?  Thanks in advance.

Re: Are you guys winning the west this year?

Short answer: Yes.

Long answer: We play UNL at home, and they also have to play @MSU., while we get @RU; otherwise we play the same conference teams. Iowa is a sleeper, with both UW and UNL @home, and @UMN as their toughest game otherwise. But they're not as good as the two top teams, and have underperformed in recent years.  Minnesota could be a spoiler, but not likely a contender. We should be undefeated in conference going into our last three games: UNL, @Iowa, UMN. I like our chances.

These ARE the Good Old Days.

Re: Are you guys winning the west this year?

having to replace so much will hurt for the LSU game, but once conference season comes around none of that will matter anymore. How we do in conference play will depend on QB play....if it sucks we could lose any game, but if we get at least average to OK QB play, we have a good shot.

This isn't going to be one of Wisconsin's better teams regardless of what the record will end up being.

Replacing Borland is going to be tough and it will show. Abby, while a solid player, can be replaced easier.

We don't have a vertical threat right now and that will be a pain until someone shows they can get vertical.

"We?" not a post about Nebraska, chief.

Re: Are you guys winning the west this year?

Unlikely.  This season's Badger edition replaces too much to seriously predict that even with a ridiculously soft schedule.  It won't be a bad year, probably in the 9-3 area.   You might want to troll the Iowa Hawkeye board.  They have the the full toolset this season.

Are you that stupid? Tell me who the vertical threat is. Remember that Abby is gone.

The west will be a fight and 5-3 may be good enough to win it.  Neb., Ia. and Wis. all have "issues."   Wisconsin's game w/Minnesota and Iowa's game w/Nebraska at the end of the season should both be meaningful to determining the champion of the west.

What with "UNL"???

I understand people(esp. in the SE part of Wisconsin) referring to UW-Milwaukee as UWM to differentiate it from UW but if other fans started calling us(UW-Madison) "UWM" it would get very confusing.  Why not just write UN or Neb.???   Is there a UN-Long Pine?  UN-Loup City?  Geez, what's next?  UMAA?  OSUC or PSUSC...?
Just sayin'...

Defense and Aranda have a lot of questions to answer.

QB could be an issue if Stave isn't 100% and OL is IMO thin and potentially suspect due to injuries.

Even with a healthy Stave, "QB could be an issue". It certainly is a question.

Re: Are you guys winning the west this year?

I wouldn't say Nebraska is due to beat us, they beat us two years ago when we blew a second half lead in Lincoln. Including the conference title game we're 2-1 against them since they joined the Big 10, nothing is due to either team. I'm not particularly worried about any other teams, but I am worried about our own.

University of Nebraska-Lincoln (as opposed to UNO, aka University of Nebraska-Omaha). We have two NUs in the B1G, but fortunately Nebraska uses both NU and UNL (I checked on their board to make sure), so it's an easy way to distinguish between them.

I never did understand that old Big 8 way of designating "University of X" as "XU" (see Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, and Oklahoma in addition to Nebraska). It's the equivalent of us referring to Wisconsin as WU. Very strange.

I checked too, OB. Nebraska fans have no trouble with UNL. UNL is a lot easier to figure out than what IU or UI is between Illinois, Iowa, and Indiana.

Re: Are you guys winning the west this year?

I was an undergrad at Illinois, which we always call "the U of I". But that's too long, and most online sources now use UI, so I've adopted that. Indiana University is, correctly, IU. Those really shouldn't be confusing. The problem is that Iowa also calls itself UI. However, it's only four letter long, so I just use Iowa.

A new one is Maryland. I live in the DC area, so am used to see it referred to as both UM and UMD. Given that UM generally is understood to refer to Michigan, I used UMD for Maryland. But then the hockey fans get confused with Minnesota-Duluth. Then there's the third UM, Minnesota. They use either UM or UMTC (Twin Cities) but the first is out and the second not well-recognized outside the state, so I just call it UMN.

I wish someone would standardize these things, lol!

A lot of their signage around campus is "U of M"

Re: Are you guys winning the west this year?

Back to the topic, we lost almost the entire defense and it was full of 5th year players, many of whom were NOT 3/4 type players.

Aranda has a lot to prove with this defense which will be much smaller, maybe quicker then last years but not lightning fast in either event.

LSU won't think we're fast on defense and we're certainly not big anymore.

LSU also has to replace a lot of players so they certainly have just as many issues as we do.

Again let me remind you Jeet Kune Do is just a name used, a boat to get one across, and once across it is to be discarded and not to be carried on one's back - Bruce Lee.

Ridiculous comaprison, LSU is reloading with 4-5 star players who have been waiting their turn.

Except that LSU's QB situation might actually be worse than ours.

Let's hope but as far AS REPLACING POSITION PLAYERS THEY ARE IN A LOT BETTER SHAPE THAN US.
Look at their last 2-3 classes the players ready to step in.

The difference is that LSU does this on a regular basis.  LSU also lost 9 players to the draft the year before, and managed to win 10 games last year.

I don't think anyone doubts if LSU can reload.  The question is, can Wisconsin reload and be ready for the first game of the year to the same extent that LSU can?

Less than 100 days before we find out!

Re: Are you guys winning the west this year?

I like the Badgers chance to win the West. As they say, it will be a "shoot-out in the Old West," or is that the new West.
I write in red as a Badger not a Husker.
I think the UW defense has a lot of hungry better than average players ready to fly around. I think quarterback will be important to keep the Big Ten defenses at bay, but rushing will be very good. Don't underestimate the Badger lineman. Some how, some way they come up with overachievers that make All BigTen.
Some of the freshmen wide receivers could be an answer to the vertical game. Some are tall and fast. Can they learn the Badger offense quickly enough is the question? Look for Gordon to have a near 2,000 yard year, and the Badgers will out score their opponents---not necessarily hold them down. But who knows??
GO BADGERS!
At least we are in the section we should have been all along!!

Considering that we've averaged 9.8 wins per season the last 5 years, I'd argue that we've been able to reload as well as most teams in the nation as well.

Had some time on my hands, so I dug up some numbers using Phil Steele's returning starters for each team.  I might do this again in a couple of weeks when he posts more comprehensive stats like % of returning tackles, offensive line starts, etc. - that's usually the middle of June that he puts it up on the web site.

Looking at Phil Steele's returning starters list:

2014: LSU 12, UW 9
2013: LSU 13 (10-3), UW 15 (9-4)
2012: LSU 14 (10-3), UW 10 (8-6)
2011: LSU 15 (13-1), UW 12 (11-3)
2010: LSU 12 (11-2), UW 18 (11-2)

Phil Steele's web site doesn't go back to early 2009 so I didn't include that year.

I'm not sure that's really conclusive of anything other than (from the outside looking in) you guys had a disappointing season in 2013 considering the number of returning starters you had.  The other observation is this is the least number of returning starters you've had in that span; after the next lowest, 10, you finished 8-6.  LSU had 12 returning starters once before and went 11-2.

Overall not much you can really hang your hat on one way or the other there.  Just throwing out some stats for fun.   Looking forward to Steele's returning experience data later this month.

I'm curious on how "winning the west" has anything to do with beating LSU.

As for that game, we should be underdogs. It's practically a home game for LSU, historically and on paper they would seem to be better. Still, they've shown that they can be beaten.

Well the big fall off was from 2011 to 2012.  Our QB went from Russell Wilson (I hear he's decent) to a walk on.  The walk-on got a bit better in 2013, leading us to a game winning drive that the refs didn't let us finish.  But then he lost us a game (PSU).  No shame in losses @OSU and vs. South Carolina in a bowl, which were both competitive.
