Billy Gonzales New WR Coach???
Just read that he is leaving IL after one year "to accept another job." Prior to IL, he coached at FL and LSU, and earlier in his career at Utah. He is supposedly an outstanding recruiter.

Re: Billy Gonzales New WR Coach???
hmm it would make sense. He spent a considerable amount of time at Bowling Green and GA said we would be placing a big amount of emphasis on recruiting Ohio.

Re: Billy Gonzales New WR Coach???
Mic'd upDef a high energy guy, his vid is a lot like GA's mic'd up. Seems like a good get if he is the one. | Year | School (position) | | 2012- | Illinois (wide receivers, 2013- ; co-offensive coordinator/wide receivers, 2012) | | 2010-11 | LSU (passing game coordinator/wide receivers) | | 2005-09 | Florida (wide receivers, 2005-07; wide receivers/recruiting coordinator, 2008-09) | | 2003-04 | Utah (wide receivers/special teams coordinator) | | 2001-02 | Bowling Green (co-recruiting coordinator, 2002; wide receivers, 2001) | | 1995-2001 | Kent State (wide receivers/recruiting coordinator, 1998-2000; running backs, 1997; offensive graduate assistant, 1995-96) | | 1994 | MacMurray (wide receivers) |

Re: Billy Gonzales New WR Coach???
Indeed he did, he has a pretty impressive list of WR's that he recruited and that played for him.

Re: Billy Gonzales New WR Coach???
Very intriguing and would fit the pattern of GA's previous hires of getting guys he's previously worked with. Gonzales has coached under Urban Meyer at 3 schools: BG, Utah and Florida and he was even the recruiting coordinator at Florida for a stretch. Has coached in 3 national title games, one with LSU (lost) and two with Florida (won both). This would really be a nice final piece.

Another assistant with time as a special teams coach. Why do I get the feeling that we are going to excel in that phase of the game regardless if he's the guy.

It seems there are rumors that he is heading to Utah as a Co-OC...so I guess we need to wait and see.

Re: Billy Gonzales New WR Coach???
This guy was getting paid 400K as the WR coach / Co-OC at Illinois. There's no way the Badgers could afford him after Barry said he wasn't raising the assistant pool and the major pay raises our coordinators got.
Too bad because everything about him fits otherwise.

I'm fine with an up and comer like azzani was who has energy and won't be gone after another solid season for the badgers.

Too bad because everything about him fits otherwise. Bet he was required to take a pay cut since he's no longer co-OC. And there aren't a lot of programs with openings right now. It's not like it's a seller's market for assistant coaches. The fact is he left. Not easy to find another $400K job right now.

I'm told they blocked well, but it's kind of hard to evaluate how they did against prior years because I don't pay attention to that all that much. But I didn't see a single player take a step forward in terms of their receiving skills. Not one. I'd call it subpar. We need more.

The fact is he left. Not easy to find another $400K job right now. Yeah, Gonzales was basically demoted at Illinois so a paycut would certainly be in order if he takes the WR job. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the only new assistant salaries that have been approved have been the OC and DC with the others likely still in limbo until the final hire so that GA can allocate the money accordingly. I don't think money would be an issue in this case.

I'd say the same about Faulkner (TEs). And they didn't even block very well. --------------------------------------------- --- Kilgore309 wrote: kepstyle wrote: I'm fine with an up and comer like azzani was who has energy and won't be gone after another solid season for the badgers. If you listened to GA's interview, he made it sound like a WR's Coach had not been finalized yet and maybe he was still looking.

Boulware will likely be the main special teams coach and he's regarded as one of the best in the biz. GA is putting together a really good staff.

IS that the only opening at LSU?
I'd love to have him on the staff, but I still am struggling to understand how the $ would work.

Azzanni is a hell of a coach. What does it say when the new guy comes in and starts looking high and low (including JUCOs) for wide receivers to play immediately?

Wow! I spent my first two UG years there (it's in Jacksonville, IL, straight west of Springfield). At the time we didn't even have a football team. In fact, when I arrived it was only the 7th year they had men students--it was originally founded in the 1800s as a women's seminary.
These ARE the Good Old Days.
