No one mentions, but we'd really miss our

No one mentions, but we'd really miss our

strength coach and his crew. I'm surprised they haven't been lured away.

Maybe I am biased as a strength coach myself, but Herbert might be the most important coach to retain.  UW has to develop it's players to build the successful teams they have had, and we have seen such good player development in the last few years with Herbert.  Perhaps he is a large reason for the UW turning out these NFL caliber athletes.

As opposed to the coaches that have left, Ben Herbert was a former Alvarez player so I think the loyalty runs a lot deeper than that of the departed.

This week has proven almost anything can happen, but Ben Herbert is a pretty loyal Badger. I'd be surprised if he left.

+1 - I think Herbert is extremely valuable - hope he stays.

Is he technically on the football staff? Or is he part of the athletic program more broadly?

I would assume they fall under strength staff.

I know when PSU hired O'Brien they gutted the entire weight training system/room(s) and redid everything. Madison is an upgrade in facilities and I think that is already in the plans. If the strength coach is respected by the new football coach, I would assume he would be retained.

Strength coaches are a dime a dozen. During my time at UW I had a few different guys, and they all were very good. This is a non-issue.

Herbs pretty damn good at what he does. The two main strength coaches are both Badgers so that obviously helps a bit.

On Wisconsin!

Huh? Not true.

While I'd guess that there is something to the argument that Herbert has a greater sense of loyalty to Wisconsin and to Barry, and it may well bet true that strength staff tend to be less likely to be turned over with a coaching change than other assistants, at some point, I'd think the same factors would come into play. He sure seems to be a good one - the kids seem to love & respect him & the results on the the field have been very good - so presumably, he'd be a desirable guy for someone else to poach. And at some point, if he hasn't already, he'll face the same difficult decision of weighing the stability of a guaranteed job elsewhere next year (with possibly better pay and/or facilities) vs. a possible but not guaranteed job here.

Obviously, selfishly this all is tough on me as a fan. But I absolutely hate the toll it takes on the coaches and moreso, the players.

"Contrary to what you guys think, I haven't forgotten how to coach defense and how to stop the run."
- Bo Pelini 9/29/12 after a 30-27 win over Wisconsin. Nebraska then gave up 70 pts and 539 rushing yards in the Conference Title Game rematch.

and loyal as hell to Barry Alvarez. No one is more pumped on the sidelines than Herb, except for maybe Brian Bott, who trains the offensive linemen, and neither of them are going anywhere.

The strength and conditioning program in terms of football, is pretty well entrenched at UW. Herb was hired in 2002 by Dettman, who was the head of the football strength of the conditioning staff at the time and now heads the entire department. It's really easy to see envision Herbert making the same progression once that time comes.

Money talks, as seen by Arkansas.

I really don't see the connection. Chris Ash is the only one who left for money, and he's a Bielema guy anyway. I think it's been made pretty clear that Charlie Partidge, and Matt Canada for that matter, wanted to stay at UW but were given time sensitive offers by other places and decided to take guaranteed jobs.

Bielema has no real connection to Bott or Herbert.

Yup.  Iowa; perfect example.

You can do everything perfectly and Wilson, because he's just fast enough to get by your defensive end or evade the spying linebacker, can still crush your soul.

I agree but it still does not mean the new coach will want him.

True... or that the old coach won't throw a pile of money at him.

I just don't understand what is going on.  Is there no way to stop the total exodus of the coaching staff?

Hiring a coach probably wouldn't hurt anything.
