Listening to it right now, keep you updated

He's obviously very frustrated with the limited budget for assistant coaches he's had at Wisconsin.

Re: Bielema on Mike and Mike at 6:45 a.m.

Said he wanted something new for his career, SEC is big stage he said and with the playoff system with a 1 loss SEC team he believes they will get in the playoffs. Also he talked about how tough it was with $ for assistants, said he couldnt go through that again and make the program better then what it was.

$300,000 was the max for OC and DC at Wisconsin. Said the toughest thing he's done was tell the team he was leaving, very emotional. Told the kids that if they wanted to say goodbye to him he would be at the front door, if they didnt they could leave out the back door, most came to say goodbye, a couple did not. And said it wasn't a $ move for him, it was for keeping good assistants and to coach in the best conference in college football, wants to win a conf title in primetime.

That is exasperated by the fact that he relies upon them so much.

We would have to have extremely more qualified and compensated offensive coaching staff if Bret Bielema was coach than if Paul Chryst had been coach. Fact.

I think you mean exacerbated.

And the more and more Bielema brings up the assistants pay, the more and more I think it's just a cop out. Paul Chryst didn't leave because we couldn't pay him, he left for a head coaching job. Are Matt Canada and Chris Ash really worth $400k?

Paul Chryst made $405,000. If he's going to make excuses for leaving he could at the least be factual.

Ok, soo.. Bielema claiming the much talked about line of 'winning a championship' was referring to the SEC championship that has eluded Arkansas.

Anyone buying that?

And yeah... I think Barry and the university would pay assistants more money- IF they thought it was deserved and warranted. Not simply for the sake of doing it. PC could have gotten a nice raise from an already respectable salary, but I think he clearly wanted to be a head coach- and it didn't look like Bret was going anywhere.

Perhaps there were candidate Bret preferred during the coaching turnover that salary came into play?

Maybe it's not so much that BB thinks Canada is worth $400k, but maybe when Chryst left, he had higher profile guys in line that he couldn't get the money to pay.

BB is correct in that Barry is cheap with the assistants. Vrable at OSU makes $750K and he isn't even that good. The ironic thing is that Barry is one of the highest paid ADs in the country. According to another poster on here he's third! Pony up Barry!

They do need to pay assistants more. I unbderstand piggy on this. Especially in his case. He needs the absolute best assistants possible in order to get it done and cover for him.

No. He doesn't have a better chance to win an SEC title than he does a B1G title. I only heard part of it but I think he said something about it being easier to make the playoffs as a one win SEC team the problem with that is while the SEC.is the 800 pound gorilla of college football not all SEC programs are equal. Just because Arkansas has rich boosters doesn't mean that they have a good shot at becoming a major player in the SEC. Other than some kids in Arkansas no one who grew up in the south is dreaming of being a Razorback.

Regardless of whether or not BB is using the assistant coaches' pay as a cop-out, the perception is quickly becoming that the purse strings are tight at UW for assistant coaches pay scale. It's important that this is addressed in the head coaching search - you don't want to scare away any potential candidates based on a message that BB is currently spinning. It's important for BA to get out in front of this before it becomes a central theme of the HC search.

Agree Huevos.  There are arguments to be made on both sides of this, but what cannot happen is that BB's voice ends up being the one that becomes "truth" because that will stain this search, the new head coaches search, etc.

Need to put this to bed now.

Ironically, in 5 years the Big ten will be considered the best football conference. Why? Because the massive amount of money the BTN brings in will allow them tyo pay assistants better, upgrade facilities, get a wider recruiting base, etc.

I think this was a transition year.

Was CBB making $ 2.6M per year at UW ?  I know he now has a contract for $ 3.2M; Petrino was averaging $ 3.53M and I believe he would have gone over $ 4M had his success continued; who knows if that would have happened with all the injuries and young players they had on the field this past season.

Re: Bielema on Mike and Mike at 6:45 a.m.

Assistant pay is the not the reason he left.
BTW,listened to Mike Heller show yesterday, they said the LSU QB coach made more than every B10 o-coordinator save one. WHile Wisconsin probably does need to pay more for QUALITY assistants, they will never pay like that.

I hope you are right George.

Now if we could just get Peterson or Shaw to come coach here - BB would look back and say "Why did I leave there?"

The Big Ten has been making big money for years.

Doesn't seem like the return on that investment is paying off for LSU.

Re: Bielema on Mike and Mike at 6:45 a.m.

Agree 100%. For as good as he was overall at the presser, Barry's answer to this question was a big miss. He basically said he thought that assistant pay was very fair and that's the end of it.

On the flip side, the same question came up at Purdue's press conference announcing Hazell. The reporter asked about the commitment of Purdue to assistants & was specifically asked of Hazell - and before Hazell could answer, AD Morgan Burke stepped right in and said, "He's got all the money he needs to hire the best staff he needs."

Ultimately, the reality of the situation may well be that Purdue isn't wiling to spend any more money on assistants than Wisconsin. But that's not how it appears.

Back to Barry - I wish there would have been a follow up - wish someone would have said:

"In 2011, you were 7th in the B1G in total assistants' pay and that was before Paul Chryst - who was the highest assistant you've ever had - left. Fair or not, do you think being 7th or worst in the conference is competitive?"

"Contrary to what you guys think, I haven't forgotten how to coach defense and how to stop the run."
- Bo Pelini 9/29/12 after a 30-27 win over Wisconsin. Nebraska then gave up 70 pts and 539 rushing yards in the Conference Title Game rematch.

Regardless if UW needs to pay their assistants better or not, the fact that BB is continually bringing it up in interviews and at his presser is a low blow.  Pretty classless to throw your former school under the bus and plant the seed in everyones' minds that UW is "cheap," especially while they're trying to conduct a coach search.

RE: Bielema on Mike and Mike at 6:45 a.m.

The fact of the matter is that BB has to have an external reason for leaving, something out of his control, lest he look unstable and not loyal.

At the same time, it'd be nice to spin that reason into a positive about his new job, to make his new employer feel warm and fuzzy.

BB has found his talking point. It's convenient. There's probably some truth to it, but he'll drop it to anyone who will listen.
