Burning bridges 101

"My father always told me its 'better to play in excellence than excel in mediocrity.'"

-  B. Bielema on moving from the Big 10 to the SEC

Question - is this the Iowa grad who got his first opportunity under BA at Wisconsin? Wow, is he writing the book on burning bridges as you leave.

I did not see this quote before.  Is this from the press conference yesterday or is it a new one from today?

Radio interview on Sirius (I'll get the show). My bro just was listening and said he had to rewind to make sure he heard the quote right.

What my brother sent me:

"want to be in best place that gives you a chance in the playoffs"

"dont find enjoyment in playing down"...father always told me its "better to play in excellence than excel in mediocrity"

Talk about a 180 he did to the UW program, just like he didnt give a rats ass

Bo Ryan's offense is officially dead and has been figured out by the B1G. The only way he can continue to coach it is if he significantly upgrades the players.-George2k5

Re: Burning bridges 101

And Coach B could not figure out why people did not love him.  I wonder if his father also taught him..."be nice to the people you meet as you climb the ladder of success, because its very likely you will meet them again as you climb down."

If the above reported statesments are true, it classis Bielema,,,,bench a kid like Gilbert against Nebraska Round I for making a few dumb statements, but then yourself make a bunch of hurtful, dumb statements in an attempt to curry favor with your latest "soul-mate."

Needs to review the presser that Coach A did on how to stay classy even when you may not want to be.

The bridge was burnt no matter what he said. Too many BB haters even before the decision. Ultimately that may be why he left. Live with it BB haters.

Wow. Just wow. Does Bret realize that he just deeply insulted the program that made him who he is? After a comment like that, it's hard to think that there wasn't some sort of bad feelings upon his departure. That is just a very aggressive and insulting statement.

I can't help but think something was going on between Bielema and the rest of the Athletic Department. You don't leave and then make all these comments if there wasn't a problem.

Re: Burning bridges 101

Many folks had commented about how much Bret had grown up on the job. Um, maybe not.  The young man could use some advice, because he is really conducting himself like a real douche and it is a small fraternity.  He better win in Arkansas because he won't win fans among Coaches or AD's this way.

Lying to your players, blindsiding the guy who gave you your big break and mentored you, not acknowledging the fan and booster support you received are all naive mistakes.  He still has a ways to mature.

From all the rumblings last year when 6 assistants bailed to his behaviors coming to light recently equals one thing...DOUCHEBAG

I will look forward to reading about him getting raped weekly at the hands of all the $EC coaches he talked down on.

They don't deserve any appreciation.  You'll see the same tactics with whoever is our next coach.

Hey Arkansas fans: watch your back with this guy. He'll throw you under the bus when he's done with you.

Re: Burning bridges 101

I always understood that because he was brash and cocky and loved to put his foot on his opponents throat.  I don't mind and, in fact, like that in a coach.  I have no problem with him being as cocky as he wants about being successful in Arkansas.

But the players deserved better than to be lied to and belittled by the guy who sold them on Wisconsin.  I highly doubt he told them back then that he thought they couldn't win a championship.  And the guy who gave him his break deserved some professional courtesy in advance.

So you support him saying that?

I'm not a bb hater (although I'm getting there), but that's an idiotic thing to say.

I got the shotgun....you got the briefcase......all in the game though

That's not true. Most Ohio State fans absolutely respect Barry Alvarez.

FIFY.  Now I can understand the situation better . . . something was indeed rotten in Denmark and, while I had been 85/15 in BB's corner before, I'm glad it is out now.

The comment to the players the day before and then "poof" . . . so very dishonest and makes one wonder why even say that?

Hope we win the RB.  That would be awesome.

Go Badgers!  On Wisconsin!

Re: Burning bridges 101

I was, on this board and in other venues, a pro-BB guy.  Still am for what he produced on the field - tough, resilient, student-athletes who won way more than they lost.

However, if all that has been said is true, from surprising Barry to what he said to the kids, he has gone down a lot in my book.

It seemed apparent that he was maturing but he obviously still has a long way to go.  To me, there are common courtesies to have in life and he seemingly doesn't understand that.  It's okay to look out for #1 and it's okay to be confident and slightly brash, I get that...but you don't denigrate, you don't disrespect, you don't disavow a place that got you to where you are today.

He could have said "I was looking for a different challenge and the SEC provides that, with such great schools and competition.  The BIG has that too, but I just wanted to try another challenge" or something like that - you don't slap the face of your former players who busted their butts for you, or the school and fans who pay their hard earned $$ so he can be on a sideline.  You live with some grace because you realize it isn't all about you.  But see, you need to look outside yourself in order to walk a life that way.

It is often how you act when you are ON TOP that defines your character.  I am sure BB feels like he is on top and we are seeing how he acts.

Not going to lose sleep over it, but it is disappointing - a coach is always modeling young people whether on or off the court/field and this was no different.  He had a chance to be a role model to Wisconsin AND Arkansas kids of how to act when you are on top and instead he took the low road.

I'm not perfect, and I trip and fall too, realize my foibles and work to get better...my hope is someday he looks back on this and grows, for himself and the young people in his stead.

Re: Burning bridges 101

Yes, Bret must have had a falling out with the administration or something similar for the type of comments he is making publicly.  As a grad and a fan, I never cared much about Bret's personality as winning covers tons.  In my field, ruthless a-holes are often the winners and get paid for it, but even those guys do not make comments that reflect gross negativity toward prior colleagues.  My read is that something or someone made Bret very bitter over the past few years.  Based on what I am reading lately, I get the impression that Bret wanted to hire better assistants at UW but could not drum up support to fork out the required cash.  Perhaps he made his case, got turned down, and then convinced himself that he would never achieve a championship under those circumstances.  Even if this was the case, then it may have been tough for Bret to swallow, but it does not justify his recent comments, imo.

No, that can't possibly be true. When I posted over and over that there must be a riff in the coaching staff, I was told over and over (by TGP included) that it wasn't the case. No way.

Unbelievable.  Reckless DB.  Hope our players show the world what "mediocrity" looks like on Jan 1st.
