Our campus is getting far too liberal.

There is liberal then there is stupidity.  I hope this was a major oversight.  Liberal doesn't include allowing people that plot you and your nation's destruction as part of your leadership.

Hope the article is factually inaccurate or this was a major oversight and changes to come.

I'm hesitant to trust a website named radialislam.com as the only side I'm getting to this story. But I agree with the position; there should be someone in place for the Islamic students.

Here are some other perspectives:

interview with the journal

Q: What do you think about terrorists using Islam as part of the attacks on the United States?

A: I think my feelings are reflective of the majority of Muslims in the country. It is a horrible development that a religion that is based on peacefulness — that it would be almost hijacked by people who are trying to use the faith in that way.

I haven't personally met anyone that does not feel the same way that I feel about this horrible historical occurrence in the history of Islam and this country.

Why do we have the need for ANY chaplains at a secular university. We are not Notre Dame. If students want to observe their mythologies  there are many off campus resources. Further if students want to study these mythologies we have many courses in theology they can enroll in. In is breathtakingly ridiculous for an enlightened university to employ a person whose religion advocates death for apostasy. And that is just Islam for starters.

i'll bite.  what would the campus/alumni reaction be if we decided to go wholly secular with no on campus religious representative?  father jude, see ya.  chaplain alman?  adios.  ed christman, don't bother coming back.

yeah, that'd go over real well.  like it or not, islam is the second-largest religion in the world.  we have lots of muslim students on campus.  why shouldn't there be a religious representative for that group (note: i am not commenting on his background or vetting).

Then let us add a chaplain for Buddhists, Hindus, etc. And also one for those who want to honor Zeus, Odin, and the tooth fairy. Its okay at Notre dame where the Pope is in charge. Get your religious fix off my campus. Take the money and endow a chair in a science department.

I have read much of the Koran (I am not an expert), and I believe there are two statements which are true.  1. Most Muslims are peaceful and want the same things from life that most people on this board want.  2. The reason most terrorist activities around the world today are carried out by Islamic people is because the Koran clearly says "the end justifies the means"-- and many Muslims interpret this as any means needed to convert non-Muslims to Islam, which clearly includes terrorist activities and killing.

To Mack's point, IMO, there are many students who embrace a faith in some God, and it is a part of who they are.  To have voluntary chaplains (not paid by the university) is a good things to address the needs of students.  For the university to pay chaplains from any faith crosses a boundary line for me.

And who do the non theists have to go talk to. We need an atheist support network at Wake Forest. This could include many of our enlightened faculty who are atheists and I am sure are apalled at Islam's treatment of women and the creationists of the other mainline religions. Further no one has talked about the need for an advisor for the Cult of Morman which may include our next President. Thomas Jefferson rolls over in his grave.
