Wake-UNC-G game

I didn't see it, but at least Wake scored a bunch of points.  Scoring was balanced.  Anyone see it and have anything to add.

We played pretty well especially the last 30 minutes. Chase, Devin, Travis, and Rountree all played really nice games. Gave up too many open 3's but overall a nice effort

So if we lose to teams we should beat we're bums. If we beat them like we should beat them we're still bums because we haven't played a tough team.

Th team can only play the game that's on the schedule today. I for one am going to enjoy the feeling of a) winning, and b) seeing guys improving their game.

World beaters? Of course not. Everything now fine? Of course not. But the. Last couple of games have at least been enjoyable and I'll enjoy that while it's here.

Oh, I agree with you that it's been great to see the guys play well and win, but these are really bad teams.  If we start out january 0-5 or 1-4, we're done for the season b/c it won't get any easier until it's likely too late.  we'll know a lot very soon.

RE: Wake-UNC-G game

I was at the game. I really like our freshmen. Definite talent there. We clearly had more talent than UNCG and would have beaten hem by 25 if we didn't give up so many easy shots and did not make such silly turnovers.

I am going to enjoy e win. Yes we beat a team we should beat but that is an improvement for us. Chase got to play against players his own speed. Travis got to play against players his own size and devin Thomas looked like a giant out there.

Thomas had a really strong game. Looked good wit his back to the basket. Aaron brings real energy and athleticism. He is fun to watch play. moto is solid and hit some big free throws for us. CMM is the real deal. Sill trying to figure out why he sat so much in the second half. Madison Jones is good but not CMM. Cavanaugh shows promise as well as a big 3-4 who can shoot.

I will enjoy this game and this win. Love the freshmen. I just hope Bzdelik doesn't drive them away.

Re: Wake-UNC-G game

Just got back from the game.  For the most part this was an up tempo game with numerous missed shots/ft's which would have lifted Wake's total points into the 90's.  Tree and Cav. were not as effective as they were last week but Thomas and McKie played well. Chase was 4-5 shooting 3's and also missed a short range shot.

I was under the impression that UNC-G was better than their record shows but they played out of control, have little height and very few athletic players.  This might be a very ugly year for Wes...

RE: Wake-UNC-G game

Cav had a really rough game. He is behind the other freshmen IMO. Tree looks more comfortable than any of the other freshmen, whether he should or not. Jones has been the biggest surprise to me. He makes a lot of mistakes; but he does not play like he is afraid. CMM is too hesitant at points; but he has a strong over-all game. Thomas is growing up fast in several parts of his game. Yet, he may get abused in league play.

Cranky Old Guy Comments On Today's Game

I'm curious what people thought about the quality of play in today's game.

Up front I need to acknowledge the modern college game is different because of the shot clock and the fact players are just physically bigger and quicker, plus officials allow alot more contact than in the past.  Shots aren't as easy to come by as they were in the Pete Maravich era.

However:

How could Wake not find a way to post up more against a team whose biggest player is 6'8"?  Is there not one player on either team that can play with their back to the basket?

What about ball movement?  I was in line at Target today and saw more movement in the checkout line.  Three guys moving along the perimeter exchanging the ball off a dribble isn't ball movement, it's called a waltz.  Remember all the great back door plays today?  How many were there, three? Four?

Each team had 16 turnovers and an assist/TO ratio under one.  And these aren't turnovers where a defensive player made an athletic play.  A good number were "out of ideas" turnovers where the man with the ball gave it away after painting himself in a corner with a move that wasn't going anywhere.  Next time you go to a game look at where the player with the ball is looking and if there head is up or down.  It's like watching people drive talking into their cell phones.

See even one blocked shot?  How often did you see a big player for either team cut off a drive?  How many tip ins?  I think two at most.

Remember jump shots?  You saw some today, but without ball movement to set them up, or a willingness to put up a quick open shot, they are few and far between.

All this sounds negative, but it is not intended to be a comment on either team's players because nothing I saw today was different than what you can see by turning on any college game.  I just think somewhere along the way basketball has lost something.  All these AAU programs are just trying to build individual players and the whole idea of basketball as a team sport is going south.

Then again, maybe it's just me.

Not really sure you watched the game

- Ball movement was solid, multiple times we got open 3's (mainly Fischer) because of ball movement
- We have one legit post player (Thomas) and he scored several times with his back to the basket
- Jump shots? Again, we got a number of good looks from the perimeter
- Blocks/ Tip Ins - We had several blocks and Rountree had an amazing dunk follow

Again, I'm not sure if you actually saw the game. We have a long way to go, but your points are not really valid

Re: Cranky Old Guy Comments On Today's Game

I thought the team played hard and hustled again today. Good effort by all.  Too many turn-overs, easy misses, and errant passes, but - hope they are learning.

On offense, it seems we run our sets where the man receiving a pass is looking first to where he is going to pass it next, (never looks at his defender) rather than looking to gain an advantage. If once one gains a bit of advantage he needs to move so someone has to come cover him and the 2nd guy then gets a better advantage, etc. until a good shot goes up. Often, CMM or whomever, gains a bit but then pulls back out. Therefore, we burn a lot of clock and too often get late in the clock. Scoring 84 that way is then pretty good.

Or, the opposite, where someone jacks up an early three that seems a surprise to team-mates, and no-one is ready to attempt to offensive rebound. But, we are getting progressively better.

Re: Cranky Old Guy Comments On Today's Game

Really happy the team is playing better but the real fun starts in 10 days with Xavier. To compete the rest of the year, the guys need to play each game at their dead-level best. The frosh will need to grow up fast now. Hope we can get a few conference games but it won't be easy.

RE: Wake-UNC-G game

Wake ignored Thomas many times when he had a guy posted up. Thomas was open and calling for the ball but it did not go into the post enough
