Re: Bzzzzzz and Wellman are cowards
The AD is treating the fan base like absolute children, and they have been since day one.
They sold us absolute crap about Jeff Bzdelik when they hired him and spoon-fed it to us.
Then they told us that it was about culture and always had been (when parents mess up they just lie to their kids and pretend like it's what they meant to do!!!!).
They've coddled Jeff Bzdelik and protected him at all costs despite him having the worst three years in ACC history.
To think that our fan base "deserves" this because the "lunatic fringe" called in and couldn't be respectful is completely BS.
Wake Forest is going through the worst three years in ACC history...think about that. The 72 games that Jeff Bzdelik has coached at Wake Forest are worse than any other coach in the history of the league (Matt Doherty, Les Robinson, Bob Staak to name a few of the recent ones...).
Yet it's somehow the fan base's fault for acting immaturely? That is the biggest pile of crap that I have ever read and you absolutely know it.

I'd be interested in hearing responses to the legitimate questions about scheme and coaching, but that's not what I heard last week. What I heard was a series of callers trying to one-up each other. I hope the opportunity to ask Grobe questions or the next basketball coach questions has not disappeared with this move. 27, I agree the majority of the fan base is supporting change, and many are pushing for change at the AD as well. But even that majority was not who was calling in last week.

Re: Bzzzzzz and Wellman are cowards
Let's get real here. If your program wins, nobody will get too upset about turning off the loonies on the radio. Once again we are proving we don't have our eye on the ball. Mr. Wellman, please feel free to use all "your" program's airtime to tell us about the state of the program, and the direction we're going in.
If you can't do better than this, then maybe you should just scrap the damn show. What's the point? No wins, no fans, no personality, no pride and no honesty.

And if the fans want to ask a question, we’ll respond to a question." (Implying to me that IF they dont want to ask a question, then buzz off) Its their athletic program not ours. Sad and it clearly states what has become obvious.
But I was surprised to read North Carolina and N.C. State have both changed the formats of how callers to their coaches’ shows ask questions. Roy Williams and Mark Gottfried do not take direct questions from callers, according to media-relations officials from the schools Right on target NewBern. They think they own Wake basketball and the radio show. What arrogance! Here's a question for the show: How will a culture of cowardice improve rebounding? The players can smell cowardice from a mile, and so can our opponents. Here's another question: Buzz has repeatedly demonstrated his inability to communicate effectively. How can such a poor communicator teach? The AD's pr offensive is being completely counterproductive. It has been from day one. Why is our beloved basketball program being sacrificed for the sake of protecting Jeff Bzdelik, who has repeatedly demonstrated his inablity to handle the job of head basketball coach?

Re: Bzzzzzz and Wellman are cowards
So we need a new basketball coach? Interesting. People seem to be confusing their hatred for Bzdelik with the practicalities of running a radio show. Why would they continue that format? If people aren't asking questions and are just using it as a forum to go off on Bzdelik, why should it continue? Who cares? We know we are bad and a change is needed. That change will come, but good grief give it a rest. This isn't about trying to make your life miserable as a fan...you think we are the only program in the history of sports that has ever made a bad hire?

Re: Bzzzzzz and Wellman are cowards
THe disappointing thing to me is Wellman has missed an opportunity to turn vinegar into wine. If he had a little common sense, he would realize that he needs to come in and do an show and take the hard questions. Deflects blame from his employee (this is what leaders do), and he might get a true reading on the fanbase other than the filtered version he gets sitting in his cherry-wood office suite.

Well said, Chrspy. We didn't get much of any of those categories last week, and now we won't get the chance to get them going forward as a result. ---------------------------------------------

The time when unc or nc state have 3 straight years under one coach of sub 200 ken Pom ratings is the time when the people who want bzzzzz head on a platter can be compared to the lunatic fringe at unc or nc state. If unc had 3 years like we've had they may bomb the university. The fact that it took year 3 before anyone even asked a tough question on the call-in show demonstrates just how non-lunatic fringe our fanbase is. I'm not sure that it does (or doesn't). I think it does reinforce the image of "Mr. Internet Tough Guy" who talks a lot of **** online but won't create direct confrontation in reality...

Re: Bzzzzzz and Wellman are cowards
If this is the direction Wake is going, save money and cancel the show. Whatever small pieces of relevant information that is shared could be provided in pre or post game interviews.
I don't fault the school for wanting to shield the coach. His hiring was a huge mistake on the AD's part and there is no need to subject him to personal attacks. I think the focus of our concern should be those in leadership positions who ruined our athletic program. We need leadership who will make it fun to be a fan.
We are losing money in ticket revenue that is critical to be able to invest in the programs. We can't afford not to make change or we will continue to fall further behind. The article from the Raleigh paper showed how far we are behind in revenue. The fact that we showed a profit is meaningless. We need the dollars to invest in our programs and the apathy that has resulted from poor management is putting us further behind every day.

Re: Bzzzzzz and Wellman are cowards
I agree w/Chrispy and Paladeac in that it is disappointing that things have come to this, but if we'd had fans who'd asked tough questions in a smart and respectful manner, then we'd still have the on-air questions. The fact that other programs had to move to the not-live format in the past reinforces the fact that people cannot be trusted to behave themselves.
So now we've lost a direct connection w/ our coaches. Very sad.
But you can still send questions and get them answered -- the radio guys will just cherry pick the questions that come in each week. It will actually help the show, as it will give everyone involved time to prepare and be less spontaneous. They will be able to develop detailed answers to questions and look up stats to support their position. So, it may be a good thing for getting more information out to the fans.
But I will miss the ability to talk with the coaches live. It was nice to have one-on-one time with them.

The other board has devolved into groupthink nonsense on this issue. I am not going to blame the fans. People are fed up with Bzzzz and things were eventually going to come to this.
But you can't just let the call-in show devolve into a constant stream of people ******** at the head coach.

RE: Bzzzzzz and Wellman are cowards
When its this bad, fans are going to vent. You can let them have the radio show where you can keep things mostly contained or you run the risk that the venting begins to take forms that you can't contain. Bags over the head and negative chants at games, FireBzdelik websites, etc.
I think the decision to do this was both a bad one and a cowardly one. We shall see.
Either way, I wonder if it has crossed the AD's mind that if the coach has to be protected from the fans to this extent, maybe it might have been a good idea to get a new coach before now.

Fortunately, this is a small enough school that you can still get one-on-one time with the coaches. Just go talk to them. I can definitely see why UNC and NCSU did this. If you are Roy Williams, do you want to sit quietly while Jethro from Henderson discusses the value of playing a zone against Presbyterian? Or why All-American #1 makes the best bounce passes? Their fan base is full of people who think they are world-class coaches because they read a book about Dean Smith or played hoops in High School. Our fan base has devolved such that there are no questions about basketball because every thinks they are victims of a giant conspiracy. If you changed the subject matter to just about anything, the corresponding responses of our fans are borderline lunacy. Why would you engage in conversation with that group? "OK, Coach, our next caller is Brian from Cooleemee. He'd like to discuss why there are black helicopters over the campus on the days after games. After, Jim from Kernersville would like to discuss the Lego recreation he has done of Tony Woods' alleged fight. Apparently, when plastic bricks are introduced, it is clear that his departure from school was part of your conspiracy to ruin Wake Forest."

Re: Bzzzzzz and Wellman are cowards
A couple of points.
1. The fan base should not be the issue. We have been more than patient long enough. Considering the level of provocation, the fans have been more than understanding.
2. Jeff Bzdelik has repeatedly proven himself to be incoherent and at war with effective communication no matter what the question, or how it was being asked. He has failed miserably no matter what or how questions were being asked. In this circumstance, the style of questioning should not be an issue.
