Re: MD/Big 10
Yahoo's Pat Forde is reporting this as well. I didn't think much of it when it was reported by PSU insiders who botched their own coaching search a couple of times. Now there appear to be legitimate reporters mentioning this. Unlike many of the other expansion rumors, this is one move that would make sense. It helps with their major athletics revenue issues, Maryland has a lot in common with the large B1G schools, and it gets the BTN into Baltimore and DC. You may think there isn't a huge interest in Maryland in that region, but there are a lot of fans of other Big Ten programs in that area.

Re: MD/Big 10
of course when you are cutting sports to meet a revenue shortfall, of course spending $50mil plus losing a year's worth of TV money and bowl money is a sound business decision....

Re: MD/Big 10
"A source told ESPN that the Big Ten has been itchy about further expansion since Notre Dame made its official move to the ACC two months ago in all sports other than football."
If Maryland leaves (taking the MD & DC TV market with it), ACC will only have itself to blame. But I guess all is well ... we getting all those great non-revenue sports teams of Notre Dame.

RE: MD/Big 10
Maryland going to the Big Ten is not a huge loss to the ACC. THey will be easily replaced. Maryland does not dominate the DC market. They would be easily replaced and the ACC will gladly take $50 million from Maryland

RE: MD/Big 10
Ought to have no penalty for leaving like the SEC. As Slive says-if you want to leave, then go for it. This will certainly makes things interesting in the next few years.

Is there anything worse than a bad troll? That wasn't even close to good trolling.

Any school wanting to leave would be bad for the reputation of the conference. It would be very negative for the ACC to lose a charter member that is the only major college in a state in a very important geographic footprint of the conference. And who would they replaced with? UConn? Ugh. Some Florida directional school?

Vandy UConn Northwestern
The logical move would be to push Notre Dame to full membership ASAP whatever it took.

And despite recent issues, losing Maryland is bad for the ACC. As the program most likely to be the last one holding the ACC banner, this should concern Deacon fans.

Re: MD/Big 10
I think it's bad for the ACC, but it's not really the ACC anymore, is it? It changed for me when Florida State came into the league.
I was born and raised in MD, live in MD and was a MD fan before I went to Wake, but I won't be that sad to see them go at this point. I've read a lot of posts from MD fans over the years and I know how they feel about the ACC and Carolina teams (esp. UNC and Duke). They feel they want to give the ACC the big middle finger than all I have to say is...LATER! Don't let the door hit ya where the good Lord split ya...
It's not the ACC I remember. AND, it's not the Maryland I remember.

If this somehow accelerates ND to the ACC then so be it.

RE: MD/Big 10
I wonder what ESPN thinks about losing inventory to the Big 10 Network in a major market. That's basically what is happening

RE: MD/Big 10
The concept of a buyout is binding legally. President Loh's comment when he voted against a $50 million buyout was that the amount of money was "punitive" and he questioned if the amount of money would hold up in court. It's the job of ACC lawyers to demonstrate that the departure of a member should be compensated with 3 years of revenue. Given the time frame to identify another team and for them to get out of their conference, I think an argument can be made that 3 years of damages is reasonable. Whether the damages should be 100% of a share of revenue will be the debate.

It's not the ACC I remember. AND, it's not the Maryland I remember. After a few years, I reluctantly came to accept Florida State. But Swofford's next move was the killing blow. I live in Virginia, and Virginia Tech was the final nail. That was the end to any semblance of respectability, and to any concept of conference as it was once known. It became a clown show, and any tweaks or changes made thereafter are simply irrelevant.
