Most successful Vanderbilt athlete of all time?
A few weeks ago, I was thinking about who would be considered the most successful Vanderbilt athlete of all time (on the field, clearly many Vanderbilt athletes go on to do other great things as well).
Specifically, I am meaning if you count both college career and pro career. Originally, the success of Brandt Snedeker had me thinking about the topic because he has been at the top of his sport in both college and the pros. Am I correct that he was considered the top collegiate golfer? Now David Price has achieved the same... was at the top of his sport in college and now has a Cy Young award.
I've only been keeping up with Vandy since I started as a student in 2002. Historically, are there many others as successful as those two in pro and college?

RE: Most successful Vanderbilt athlete of all time?
Bill Wade, quarterback in the 50's, who went on to lead the Chicago Bears to great success. Other than that, I can't think of any.
I think Price will eventually be our most successful Vandy athlete of all time. If Cutler leads the Bears to a Super Bowl win (or two), then it'll be a close race.

Well, if Snedeker wins the Masters...
how would that figure?

Will Perdue, 4-time NBA Finals MVP*
* Ok, 4-time NBA Champion. But, this sounded a lot better.

Re: Most successful Vanderbilt athlete of all time?
David has the trifecta: Roger Clemens Award (and the Dick Howser Trophy), #1 overall pick and now Cy Young.
I guess he's still shy of a World Series MVP, but other than that, he's the most accomplished VU athlete on the college and pro level.
Remember, David was the most decorated single-season athlete in SEC history for his 2007 campaign.

Re: Most successful Vanderbilt athlete of all time?
this is a hard call but i'll throw out these in no certain order. 1.will perdue 2.bill wade 3.david price 4.jay cutler 5.brandt snedeker 6.clyde lee..i think the only one that's won a pro championship outta these so far is bill wade(chicago bears).

Uhhh, Brandt won the Fed Ex Cup. I would definitely call that a Pro Championship.

RE: Most successful Vanderbilt athlete of all time?
Clyde Lee had a great NBA career and was all everything at VU. Will Purdue was all everything at VU and as a backup NBA player won, what, 4 NBA rings? Those two would have to be on the list. I agree that at this moment, it has to be Bill Wade, but 5 years from now it will most likely be David Price.

Good responses. Thanks!
I need to read up more on Bill Wade. I know he was the top pick, but don't know much about his pro career.

Re: Most successful Vanderbilt athlete of all time?
Bill Wade used to work at one of the banks downtown when he was older (late 1970's/early 80's). He played in an era when pro players weren't paid multi-million dollar salaries and had to find a job after football. I used to go down there and hang out with him at lunch now and then to just listen to him talk about 'the old days", though I don't remember much now about what he said, but I do remember him talking fondly of his opponents and teammates.
