Re: Black's win game 2

I was listening on the radio amongst a bunch of home activity and didn't really hear much.  Were both pitchers tight/few walks/few HBP?  How did the defense look?  Swanson look sharp at SS again?  Who got hits?

Listening online with no GameTracker ...

... it was hard to keep up with stats, but I believe Beede struck out 3 in the first (one reached on a passed ball) and about 6 for the game. But I believe he walked 5 or 6 as well. His fastball is up to 96mph, but the control is off.

Campbell still hitting the ball well. I don't recall hearing much, if anything, about him. But since Kemp moved to LF for the latter part of Game 1 it's not out of the question to see Campbell at 2B and an outfield of Kemp, Harrell and Yaz.

And I have a question about the fans in attendance for these free games. I didn't hear anything about it tonight, but last night around the ninth inning Eric Jones said there were "about a hundred fans." Did he mean "about a hundred fans" had stuck it out until the ninth inning. Or were there only "about a hundred fans" for most of the game?

What would you who were there estimate the attendance for Game 1 and Game 2?

As for attendance last night as I was there....   I would estimate it to 300-500 last night which I thought was pretty good.   Tonight I heard Eric Jones say it was a good crowd for the weather being so cold.  Don't what that is number wise.....

RE: Black's win game 2

I was at both games. Last night, I "counted" 177 but could have missed a few. Thursday's crowd was much larger (400+?).

Swanson had another great game on Friday -- 2 hits (one a triple over the rightfielder's head), 2 RBI, and a run scored, along with solid defense. Campbell at 2nd also had another good game with a bases loaded hit and 2 RBI. Based on this small sample of 2 games, I could easily see Kemp going back to left and Campbell taking second. I have little doubt Swanson will be our starting shortstop, although McKeithan will definitely be pushing him (he needs to hit the ball more consistently.) I also see the freshman Xavier Turner getting a lot of work at third. The thought of 3 freshmen starting on the infield, however, is a bit daunting (but definitely a great sign with regards to the next 2 years.)

The pitching was pretty good, although there were far too many walks, attributable to the cold weather perhaps, or maybe the rotating home plate umpires. Beede was hitting the mid 90's. Freshman Fulmer was pretty impressive as the Gold starter. We also saw freshmen Delano, Raasch, and Ferguson again and they did well. Delano is a beast (6'5", 275) and would physically make for a big closer perhaps. There have been a lot of hit batsmen (5 on Thursday, a few more last night.)

On a down note, the bulk of the hitting can be summarized as "Kemp + Harrell + freshmen". Yaz, Navin, Gregor, Lupo et al have provided very little offense in either game. However, they'll be there in the spring and, as one would expect, the freshmen are working very hard to make an impression right now (and they are definitely succeeding in my eyes.)

On an up note, the defense across the board has been great -- one error total, and it wasn't a "bad" error.

I've been pleasantly impressed with the field itself. It looks great and plays great. One thing to look for this year is overslides -- there have been several already. Last night, Swanson started his slide into 3rd early (which you have to do on this surface) and ended up about 3 feet past the bag, although he was able to scramble/crawl back to the bag. This will be a major issue for visiting teams who aren't used to it.
