Darius Thompson...

Has decommitted from Vanderbilt, per Twitter.

"Jerry Meyer ‏ @ jerrymeyer247

According to Darius Thimpson's aau coach, Thompson has opened up his recruitment and is no longer committed to Vanderbilt.

RE: Darius Thompson...

Maybe he wants to learn how to play defense after the little scrawny point-guard with all the dreads from Oakland lit him up for 26 points the other night.

OT - (the Oakland guard has now been dismissed from his h.s. team by the way and check out why... www.tennessean.com/article/201...0059/2275/RSS05 )

"According to his AAU coach..."

Oh, that's just a multitude of discussions right there.

I think it is a blessing in disguise! Last thing we needed was another guard. He was a red shirt candidate at best!

True Nash. I hate to sound like UTjr fans when they lose a recruit, but I agree. We need a 6'9" guy with bad intentions for some serious beatdown work in the paint to free up one of the dozen guards we've already got running around out there.

I actually liked Darius Thompson. His highlights were sick. He could shoot, dribble, and dunk aggressively => qualities we largely lack on our roster.

why the hell would he commit then decommit like 2 weeks later..?

Who knows? He's a 17-year old. Remember just a couple of years ago when Terrence Jones committed to Washington at a press conference and then backed out before the day was over? Sometimes kids get starry-eyed, sometimes they get pressured,... Sometimes the other schools suddenly take notice when a major program gets an under-regarded recruit to commit, and actually start to recruit them the day they verbally commit to someone else. It could be anything, and he still might come to Vanderbilt.

Re: Darius Thompson...

According to recruiting expert Jerry Meyer, DT realized his PT would be very limited behind KJ and McClellan.  I saw him play a few weeks ago with some other vandymaniacs and none of us left impressed, and we had all seen KJ and JJ in HS too who were just on a different level.  Now is an opportunity to find some muscle at the 4 or 5 spot!

That's what I thought too.  I thought he could be a heck of a scorer.  Perhaps for someone else...

One of the tweets said he is now eyeing 3 schools. Was one of those pay things and I couldn't open it. Does anyone know who those 3 are?

I thought he could have been a nice solid player for us as well.  That being said, KJ is legitimately one of the best PGs in the SEC.  If the kid is unwilling to back up KJ, and refine his game for a couple of years, then he should go somewhere else.  Surely he didn't think he was going to waltz in and take KJ's job...but maybe he did.  I would have loved to have him, but if immediate PG playing time is important to him, we don't have it to give.  Good luck to him.

I know Butler was on his list before...if I'm him, that's where I would go.

Re: Darius Thompson...

No, Butler pulled the offer a month and a half before he he committed anywhere. They weren't recruiting him.

They targeted Rene Castro at the 1, got him, then all other 1 offers were pulled

Supposedly, Tennessee, Auburn, and A&M with Tennessee in the lead.  Even though kids decommit all the time, this one is a little weird because of the timing.  The PG playing time story doesn't add up without something more (e.g., another school sweetening its offer or Vanderbilt in the lead for someone better for 2013 or 2014).

Re: Darius Thompson...

Maybe all the negative posts and bashing on this site made him nervous.  Having seen his film and watched his recruitment I honestly don't think he was what VU needed anyway, I just never posted it bc why be a doubting thomas and rain on a commit's parade?  What we do need is another Damian Jones.

This is also, if I recall, how we got Rod after he decommitted from Arizona.  And also how we got Langhi after he decommitted from UConn.

I agree with this.  It's not like Kedren and McClellan just showed up on campus.  He should have been familiar with each before he committed.

Re: Darius Thompson...

Something about this stinks profusely.  I wonder who is paying his AAU coach for player evaluation consulting fees?
