"Coach for Life" fired at Old Dominion
"Taylor has been the head coach at Old Dominion since 2001, and is the school's all-time winningest head coach with 239 victories. The Monarchs have finished above .500 in each of the last nine seasons, reaching the NCAA tournament four times during that stretch. This season, however, Old Dominion has been one of the worst teams in Division-I, dropping 10 straight games."

Re: "Coach for Life" fired at Old Dominion
Guy was over .500 for 9 straight years? He has 4 NCAA bids in a one-bid league in a decade? They fired hom over one bad year? Unless there is a lot more there are some big behind the scenes issues (drugs, NCAA violations, etc.) that's just dumb.

The AD made the bizarre statement that the decision was "not based solely on wins and losses." This statement came just weeks after he said that Coach Taylor had "an outstanding reputation" and "[t]his is just unfortunately one of those years even the great ones have." Of course, the real point of this post was that Vanderbilt should fire Stallings because ODU fired its coach, so I see no need to let additional facts get in the way of that point. Of course, we no longer see the OP referencing John Groce at Illinois as an example of the coach we need to hire (i.e., the "Jeff Lebo Memorial Coaching Slot") since Illinois collapsed just like it did last year under Bruce Weber - who, interestingly enough, has guided Kansas State to the #13 ranking in the country.

And supposedly he had a drinking problem with some reports saying that he recently showed up drunk for his own coaches show.
But... but.. but that's not important in this OP agenda

If my team was 2-20, I'd show up drunk for my coach's show, too.

Just to be certain, there was even an extra note in the original post saying SPECIFICALLY this was not about the coaching staff of any sport at VU or anywhere else. (except ODU of course which was in the title of the thread)

RE: "Coach for Life" fired at Old Dominion
OT: John Groce's team isn't going to win the Big Ten, but they are 15-8 and beat Butler by 17.
What is our record again? What was our score vs. Butler again?
(Illinois has to play Indiana again, Michigan again, tOSU again... so no, they won't be a big dance team but not because there is anything "wrong" with their new coach... lots of schools would LOVE to have him)

My point isn't that Groce is a bad coach so much as it is that you've been writing a lot less about Illinois' brilliant move since they went from 13-1 to 15-8 (2-7).

RE: "Coach for Life" fired at Old Dominion
My point isn't that CKS is a bad coach so much as it is that we went from beating the national champs to being in last place in the league and are now in danger of having our first ever 20 loss season. Never happened under Wayne Dobbs or Schmidt or VBK or any other coach.
btw... are you familiar with the 5 players they already signed at Illinios? Both of the bigs are guys we offered and didn't get.

RE: "Coach for Life" fired at Old Dominion
I think that awkward interview he gave is what did him in(obv the 2-20 record had something to do with it too), really looks like Blaine has fell off the wagon and is drinking again.
If you look on Deadspin, the interview he did with the radio guy is on there and he was on something.
edit: my bad, didnt see VandyWhit's post, yeah that is it.

Re: Wow. That gives a whole new meaning to "what have you
done for me lately" doesn't it?
As I used to live in Va Beach, I had friends at ODU, which is in Norfolk. Rest assured that it is a very, VERY small school, somewhat similar to Fisk as far as size goes.
In short, to get 4 bids to the big dance in 10 years at ODU is super-impressive, so he must have been drunk on duty or something. I seriously doubt it's due solely to one piss-pore season.
