Next Two Years?

Next Two Years?

Anyone see this team, without some major help, competing for a SEC title within the next couple of years? We need some big boy recruits to come in and help this bunch!

Next Year - NIT/NCAA Bubble (9 or 10-seed)
Year After -- NCAA (Sweet 16)

To make it to the sweet 16, you have to get out of the first round. We haven't been able to do that with teams that had way more talent than this.

Re: Next Two Years?

I actually think we will be pretty good as soon as next year.  McClellan and Jones are exactly what this team needs: a pure scorer and a post presence.

Call me crazy, but I'm also of the belief that Henderson can become an impact player if he'll dedicate himself to getting in shape.  He just looks tired all the time, not to mention a little flabby.  I'm hoping he's still trying to get it together after the broken foot. Though I'll admit, he's had time to improve his conditioning better than it seems to be.

If he's not that committed, well, I'm not as bullish as Jones will need to perform like an All-Conference player as a freshman.

No.  Players do not suddenly become competent with the passage of time.  The players coming in are unknown as to their skill level or ability to play.  Judging by the teams that were recruiting them, they would be at best role-players on anyone else's SEC team.

We are destined to play in the Wednesday tournament game for the forseeable future.

If we schedule our non-conference games smart next year, we could potentially  go to NCAA. The SEC is pretty weak, I can see us doing well next year. We were awful beginning of the year, and are now competitive in the vast majority of our games.

Let's not overreact.  I'm f$@!!# p*#*@&! about this game right now, but we held the lead for what, 38 minutes and 20 seconds of this game against a team that is now 6-2 in the SEC.  It's not like we are completely incompetent.

And judging by the teams recruiting them they'd be role players?  Thompson was being recruited by Butler!  Right now, for one game, I'd take Butler straight up against any team in the SEC (yes, including Florida).  Jones is a consensus top 80 player.  McClellan hung 30 in a game as a true freshman last year.

Re: Next Two Years?

This board is completely zero-sum. If we win its all parades and balloons, and if we lose its the end of the world. We all knew this would be a tough season. But if you look at where we are compared to the beginning of the season we are lightyears better. Early in the year we only had one scorer (Johnson) and if he had a bad game we lost badly. Our players are getting better, its just incredibly frustrating. I cant remember a season with so many close losses.

With that said, its pretty easy to be a frontrunner fan or a fan that just goes all negative with one bad season, it takes resilience to support the team when they are down. I feel people know next season will be better though. The good seasons feel sweeter when you are always with your team, and not just a bandwagon jumper.

Right....and not one of the newcomers has played one second in the SEC.  I am hoping they are all going to be all-Americans.  Judging from the talent that has been recruited for the current team, I have my doubts.

Bright and Jeter have been solid as freshmen, Kedren Johnson is only a sophomore -- imagine how good he will be as a senior (probably All-SEC)

The SEC is the #8 conference in RPI right now.  It's not like we're in some magic league where only all-Americans can play...

Re: Next Two Years?

Should we feel good about that? Our players cannot even muster a winning record in the #8 conference?

The fact that I believe this team has a future ought to give some on this board hope. biggrin I'm a glass half empty kind of guy. This team has improved and competes very hard. A little more experience and a little help coming in will make things much better. Hang in there folks. I've seen our veteran talented teams blow games with careless play. These guys want to win. They'll learn.

Ole Miss is the second best team in the SEC and we took them to overtime; Alabama has six SEC wins and we were leading the whole game --- we will continue to improve (even though this year really sucks).

Re: Next Two Years?

You win college with guards.  Yes, you have to have some post players, but KJ will be one of the best PG we ever had.  He already does more with the  ball than most who have come before him. Not the best shooter, but a dynamite playmaker, passer, and scorer, not to mention a matchup nightmare for opposing PG with his size.

I truly believe with anything from Henderson and a PF, we are in the tournament next year, and we are  back near the top of the SEC in 2015.
