Thoughts on ut game?

Thoughts on ut game?

Anybody have any thoughts on tonight's game?

-I think Stallings has finally seen the light and I don't expect much Josh Henderson the rest of the way.  I know there is a fine line between discussing and "bashing" kids, but let's be honest here, Henderson is a long long way from being an SEC level player.  I am hoping that Stallings is finally ready to cut his losses and let young Josh learn from the bench.

-I think we see the lineup a lot of us have been asking for tonight; Kedren, DJP, Bright, Jeter and Odom at the 5.

-I think Moats and Siakam will also play major roles tonight as ut doesn't really play basketball, more like footsketball.

-If the refs call a fair game, we can and should win tonight, but a lot of times with a Kwanzo coached teams, the refs get tired of blowing the whistle and that will not work in our favor if that's the case.

-We need Kedren to make the leap to the next level and tonight would be a good time for that to happen.  Kedren is a special player, but he hasn't played like it yet.  He needs to finish better int he lane, hit his free throws and lead this team if we want to come out of that place (is there a worse smelling city in the country?) with a win.

Any thoughts?

I think Johnson has been hurt more than they are letting on. To watch how he carries his shoulder/arm is a concern.

I think you're right about the 5 spot. Stallings needs to be more creative with limited options. It's a tough situation.

Seems like lately we either:

1) Win
2) Get absolutely crushed and embarrass ourselves
3) Lose a game at the last second that we should have won.

If the pattern continues, not sure which of the three we'll see tonight.

Kyle Fuller had the game of his life the last time we won a big road game (Xavier), so hope he plays well.

To win we have to do two things.  One, stop, or at least slow Stokes, and two, HIT THE DANG free throws.

I expect a better game from VU tonight after getting beat down last game. That seems to be the cycle. Get a good butt kicking then play better for a few games, then another beat down. I don't think ut is that good so I expect a close one if we hit free throws.

Re: Thoughts on ut game?

One way to "stop" or "control" Stokes is foul the heck out of him.  Do not allow him to get a clean look.  He shoots 52% from the line.  If he is going to beat us, I want him to have to do it from the line.  There are a lot of fouls that can be run out there between Henderson. Moats, Siakam.  At least Henderson and Moats could contribute by getting their 5 fouls each.
The ole hackashaq defense.

I don't think #2 is in the cards.  One of those was the first SEC road game for the freshman and coming off a Thursday game.  The other was against a top 20 team.  Both against teams that are well known for their pressure.  I don't think UT is a good enough team or a bad enough matchup for us to just get crushed. (And yes, I'm knocking on wood as I write this).

We may win, we may lose but I'll be really upset if we get pounded.

I'm thinking with our lack of an inside presence, Stokes could have a career night. Plus, don't expect any calls with Gonzo in their ears all night. All in all, depends on how mad our team is after the last "whupping".

So Stokes is slightly worse than our entire team

A very sobering thought is that people can make fun of Stokes' 52% free throw shooting only to realize that our entire team is only 6% points higher....

I wish these kids would put the effort in to change this.  I guess it doesn't matter at this point, but a few less video games and more work in the gym this summer would be nice.

I am not making fun of the stat, just saying if he is going to have a career night against us, I would make him do it from the free throw line.

I am predicting that Henderson does not get double figures

Re: Thoughts on ut game?

This is a very winnable game.  Yoo Tee is no better at scoring than we are.  Mizzou was a bit of a mismatch unfortunately.  Our guard play will have to be much better than Yoo Tee's because they are a lot better inside with Hall and Stokes.  Hopefully we actually stick to McBee for once because he only has one way to beat you.

We don't have an obvious defensive answer for Stokes, but I certainly hope Siakam is part of the picture.  I am certainly a pro-CKS guy but I've been so frustrated watching James sit and just knowing his effort, energy and rebounding would be helpful to a team with serious post play issues.

Ugh, I'm turning into one of those agenda posters, except my agenda isn't to bash the coach but rather to constantly promote Siakam.  I should be his agent.

Re: Thoughts on ut game?

i think we're all expecting a low scoring game.

2 fairly obvious keys to the game:
(1) contain Stokes and get him frustrated
(2) hit 3s (because we simply cannot score much inside)

Vandy won't lose by more than 10.
Vandy won't win by more than 10.
The game will be in the 50s.

Damn. We lost another game we should have won.

To their credit, we didn't fold and lose by 10. Could have.

The "should have won" is debatable. We were only given a chance to win because the Viles missed several FT's there at the end. They could and probably should have sewn it up earlier.

I'd call it a "could have won", not a "should have won."
