Sometime in the 1950's there was a gambling scandal involving the NIT. Because of this the SEC would not allow it's teams to play in the NIT from the late '50's thru the 1960's. Roy Skinner once said that even without the ban Vanderbilt would not be able to play in the NIT because the players would not be allowed to miss that many days of school (back then the entire tournament was played in New York and if you made to the championship game you would be there for a week).
