So I'm watching the Rice-Memphis game...

So I'm watching the Rice-Memphis game...

Not much else on, but anyways... they start talking about our game from last night.  The guy said it was like only the 5th time in 51 years (?) that Ole Miss was able to beat us in Memorial Gym.

I'm not going to take sides on this but I did want to see if people thought that was an indication of the direction of the program currently trending being on the right or wrong track... sort of like when Gallup does one of those polls about the economy or other issues.

I'm still waiting to reserve judgement at the end of the season, at which time I will either be pleasantly surprised wink or go on a rant akin to the reading of the riot act. flushed

NOTE: This post does not address or "take sides" in the topic of retaining or not retaining the current coaching staff of any sport at Vanderbilt University or at any other school or entity, collegiate or professional.

Bhoyal, if you think about it, Ole Miss probably hasn't fielded more than five good teams in 51 years - and at least two of them were with Elston Turner.

They had Johnny Neumann within the last 50 years, too. I remember them beating a Roy Skinner team about 120-100 in Memorial his senior year.

He was the closest thing to Pete Maravich.

Re: So I'm watching the Rice-Memphis game...

Sean Tuohy - 4 times All-SEC, all time SEC assist leader

Gerald Glass - 1st round NBA draft pick - scored 44 in Memorial

tied for first place in the SEC West during the 2006–2007 season

2009-2010 tied for first place in the SEC West

leading the SEC in scoring with 26.3 points per game, forward John Stroud named All-American

1981 SEC Tournament Championship

Forward Carlos Clark is named AP All-American (scored 21.1 points per game)

1997 began an unprecedented Rebel run of six straight postseason appearances and back-to-back SEC Western Division championships

1998 Ole Miss hits 900 victories with behind stars Keith Carter and Ansu Sesay

From Jan. 11, 1997 Ole Miss went on a 29-home game winning streak.

2001 Ole Miss finished No. 9 in the nation with a 27-8 mark and a third SEC Western Division title in five years.

2007 Ole Miss clinches its fourth SEC Western Division championship

2008 At 13-0, Ole Miss has set a new mark for the best start in school history

2010 Chris Warren leads the Rebels to a share of their fifth SEC Western Division title.

-------------------------------------------------- ------------------

I really have to ask.  Have they sucked that bad?  Have they really been that devoid of SEC level athletes?  That's not really the topic of the thread...

They haven't made the tournament in a decade and have only been maybe 5 times in school history- same as Stallings in the past 6 years.  Winning the West was a joke for most of the recent past. They have a couple of good senior post guys who together have 200+ starts.

Re: So I'm watching the Rice-Memphis game...

Is there anyone on Planet Earth that has claimed this isn't a highly disappointing season for Vandy basketball?  I doubt the actual Mrs. Stallings would take that tack.

The question really becomes whether this coupled with a decline in numbers in recruiting (though not quality as no one disputes that Damian Jones is a good recruit and both Bright and Jeter have looked very promising) is enough for a change to be made this year.  And there aren't a whole lot of Vandymaniacs who agree with you on that no matter how badly we play.  And, Mrs. Stallings aside, I also don't think there are a whole lot of Vandymaniacs who would NOT be in favor of a change if things don't improve substantially next year.

bhoyal, if you weren't occasionally funny I'd have put you on ignore like so many others have.  This endless campaign is wearisome.  You hijacked a thread about CJF's awesome business cards to impugn Stallings yesterday.  Frankly I feel like I'm just feeding the troll by even responding here.

I was at that game. Actually, we WON 130-112. I believe we scored 75 points in the 2nd half. Neumann had around 60, I think. Not as flashy as Maravich, but smooth as silk. I also saw him play several games as a pro, with the Memphis Tams in the ABA. I was shocked that he never became a star in the pros.

BH(top5/10 BB knowledge). The team compass is still working. It gets off course sometimes but I think the young trainees are still learning map reading.

Neuman had 53 which I reckon is still the building record.

Still the highest Commodore score?

Most points scored by a losing team too I think.

bhoyal, I have enough between the ears to understand that you do not wish to be suspended from this site but still intend to conduct a more indirect campaign for a change in basketball coaches.  I think the disclaimer is clever and a kind of funny way of dealing with your problem.  I think the campaign is quite dull when it drones on post after post and even shows up on the football board.  We ought to be able to discuss Vandy sports on this board without nearly every thread turning into a referendum on CKS.

^ Your post is the only one in the thread that even mentions coaching ^

None of the others do.   It seems that you are trying to bring "coaching" into a thread where it has not been mentioned. (and will then complain about it)  I will now have to put you on ignore for trying to hijack this thread.  Since I won't be seeing your posts any more, take care.

Do you happen to have any old ABA memorabilia?

Details, details. I'm mighty proud my memory was 92% correct on the score. Who cares which team was which?   wink

Re: So I'm watching the Rice-Memphis game...

So discussing the state of the program is different than discussing coaching.  That's very helpful.  I'll have to remember that.

Ignore away bh.  I'm just trying to help steer you away from your one track thinking and make the basketball board tolerable for everyone even in a lousy season.

Ole Miss actually led that game at haltime

60-54. In addition to Neumann, another player of note on that Ole Miss squad was Dave Rhodes, Mike Rhodes' (Country, of 'Town and Country') big brother.

Re: So I'm watching the Rice-Memphis game...

You are totally confused here.  On December 22, 1970, Vanderbilt defeated Mississippi 130-112 at Vanderbilt.  I have a copy of Year-By-Results, Vanderbilt Basketball before me and that was the only very high-scoring game that the two teams played.  Also I remember seeing it.

RE: So I'm watching the Rice-Memphis game...

That was before the 3 point shot too! Just think about long range gunners such at Terry Compton, Jeff Gary, Phil Cox... how different their numbers would have been if the "3" had been introduced into college ball sooner.

btw - somebody may want to remind OakPark that I have him on ignore, so if he is responding to my posts, I won't see them.
Didn't want to have to do it, but he left me no choice.

Is he the dad of The Blind Side fame? He certainly married up if that's the case.
