The problem with being really bad at free throws is...

It is (strangely enough) a huge boost for the other team when WE get in the bonus and the double bonus.

You know, the score was about 67-54 Vanderbilt when Ole Miss committed its 7th team foul.

Too bad that this isn't football and we can't just decline the penalty.

But until we get better at free throws, other teams always know that they can foul us and get the ball back.. sort of like Hack-a-Shaq... only it's the whole team!

Actually, given our horrible percentage from the field, fouling gives about a 56.8% return.  Letting us shoot gives only about 48% (adjusted for 3-point percentage.

bums coached these guys in high school?

Hell, my coaches in junior pro growing up made me practice them so much, I hit at least 6 out of 10, if not 7 out of 10.

This is flat messed up. I blame their high school coaches (and/or the lack thereof).

This isn't on Kevin. You should already be halfway proficient at the line before you step onto a division 1 basketball court. I emphasize division 1, too.

This ain't division III ball, for the love of God; this is the SEC.

this is a good point!  i wonder if many coaches look at ft% when recruiting.  also wonder how our players did in hs compared to their vu ft performances.

Now you're making me put my math geek hat on.  In the double bonus, if we shoot 56.8%, our free throws we get a 56.8% return.

In a 1-and-1 situation this isn't the case, since there is a 43.2% chance we walk away empty, a 32.2% (.568*.568) chance we get 2 points, and a 24.5% (.568*.432) chance we come away with one point for an average of (0*.432 + 1*.245 + 2*.322=) .890624 points per trip -- only a 44.5% return.  Losing the chance at a second shot really kills us.

I don't know how to factor this in, but I also would think that we are more likely to get an offensive rebound out of offense instead of off of a free throw ... but I guess that might be counter-acted by the 0% chance of committing a turnover at the free throw line (though I hope our guys don't take this as a challenge).

I said ABOUT 56.8%.  In any event there are only a MAXIMUM of 3 one-and-one tries  per half, I felt safe in ignoring the adjustment.

The point is, fouling evey time is a fail proposition (but not by much).

Good points bek, but, according to Kevin, they make them in practice.  I think I read an article that said they made 24 of 28 in a recent practice.  I think this team's problems are far more mental than physical.  They've shown they can play well and be a good team, but seem to have mental issues: free throws, finding ways to lose games (this isn't the first game we threw away this season).  Also, our shooting seems to be very, very streaky.  If one guy starts hitting shots, everybody starts hitting them.  If one guy starts missing, everybody starts missing.  Same thing with turnovers.

So, that leaves us with good news and bad news.  The good news is that we have a team that, physically, is capable of being pretty darn good.  We've got guys that are capable of hitting shots, playing good defense and taking care of the ball.  We've got talent.  The bad news is that this team has mental issues and how to correct those is anybody's guess.

There's a free throw shooting video called "Nothing But Net" by Coach Herb Magee. It can't hurt to look at it in the off season. I've seen the promo and this guy just nails bunches in a row.
