Re: better play - still stealing defeat from the jaws of victory

"The difference between the halves was - in the first half we had tremendous ball movement and got wide open threes."

You know, Jeter and Odom had wide open looks in the last few minutes of the game and they simply clanged them off the rim.  We shot lights out in the first half, but returned closer to our seasonal average down the stretch and in OT.  I honestly think the looks were good almost all game, we just didn't hit the shots during key stretches in the 2nd half.

"However, you simply cannot shoot 10-23 from the free throw line and win in any conference."

Agreed. Not only didn't we shoot FT's very well, we also somehow managed to not box out on THREE different occassions when OM was shooting.

I also thought generally--outside of DJP--the defensive effort--ESPECIALLY in the paint was awful.  We hit shots and didn't play any tough D?  Weird.

I agree we missed some open looks in the second half -

but the ball movement was a lot less crisp -

and so Ole Miss was not falling all over the place.  This translates into our getting more rebounds, having Ole Miss out of position, and more open passing lanes which then makes the ball movement easier still.

In the second half, for the last ten minutes as they pressed - and we stood around, the d had a hand in our face, the clock was trickling down - and we almost never could go "inside-out" to find the open man.  Instead, we largely went "piddle around the outside" - which is easier to defend.  We may have found an open man eventually - but it was not smooth . The first half we really had some outstanding ball movement.  It is something very positive we can take from the game.  But again - with the game on the line, we did kind of gag until we actually lost the lead.  Then we played inspired ball again to the three second mark.  Henderson's shot was a prayer - but we should not have let him get the ball and we should have contested the inbounds & then OT never even happens...
