Who will be our starting QB against Temple?

Who will be our starting QB against Temple?

I think Mccrary is the most talented but I wouldn't be surprised if Rivers is starting.
Before the the first game on Dudley field in 1922 against Michigan, Dan Mcgugin addressed his team. "You are going against Yankees, some of whose grandfathers killed your grandfathers in the Civil War". It is not known if the players knew Mcgugins father was an officer In the Union army.

I feel General Patton will lead us into battle for the season opener but Mccrary will eventually beat him out. Then again Rivers is the joker in the deck this spring. Nice to have choices I guess. With our stout defense our QB doesn't have to be great just a good game manager I think. Don't give the opposition points in other words.

I suspect we will see a 3 QB rotation with Temple. To see who the strongest QB is going forward.

Unless Rivers or McCrary have a really strong showing against Temple, I would not be surprised to see Patton starting against Ole Miss since he has the strongest resume of the three in SEC games. The kid started in the win against Tennessee and helped in the comeback win against Georgia.

If he's really good, I would expect Rivers to start against Temple. Since he didn't get much PT at LSU, he may not be really good. In that case, I would expect Robinette to start--but McCrary might very well be the starter before long.

Patton. JMac will play too but I bet Patton starts. I don't know enough about Rivers to guess where he ends up.

McCrary no doubt. No way Rivers even learns the system by then. I've learned my lesson about these highly touted QB transfers to VU.

I'm watching the replay as I'm typing and what I saw in the spring game, it has to be McCrary

I don't believe in trashing any of our kids but this game is reminding me why Patton shouldn't start...the kid has toughness but he's just not a very good QB

May depend on who does/studies the most this summer; it's a new system for everyone. I have no idea, but I suspect we'll have a good idea fairly early in August. It's probably also worth noting that, if history is any indication, we'll need more than one QB to get through the season.

Re: Who will be our starting QB against Temple?

I don't know who'll start, but I do think it will be a huge indicator what to expect for the season.

Patton is a very capable QB who can lead us to wins over teams where we have equal or better talent and favorable match ups. I just don't see him coming through with the big pressure passing plays that will be needed to beat the upper level SEC teams. If he's the starter, I expect we can have a successful season beating the people we're supposed to beat and going 50-50 in the tossup games, and ending up bowl-eligible.

If someone wins the job away from Patton, then that means we're stepping our QB position up from pretty good to something better; maybe found that guy who can make the critical 3rd-and-long throw against a strong defense when the game is on the line.

If Rivers beats out Patton, we might be in for a better year than we thought.
If McCrary does, we might be in for more than one year like that.

That's why I say I like Robinette, like a lot of things about him - and still I hope someone can take his job away from him.

Patton saw his first year of action last year. He will improve a lot under Dorrell. He is a winner. I don't think this race is over. He played injured in the spring game if I remember correctly. Yeah, I sound like His cheerleader but I think he is better than he is getting credit for.

Re: Who will be our starting QB against Temple?

Ok, look at Patton's starts...Georgia game was defense and running game, Florida was ALL defense, the A&M game was not very good especially when we had momentum going into halftime and he comes out and throws a pick, and the bowl game..he was good in the first quarter and didn't complete ONE pass in the second half and if our defense didn't step up in the 4th quarter we might lose that game. Now I was at the open practice and at the spring game and I'm going on what I saw and he got outplayed by McCrary and McCrary was going against the number 1 defense..saying all that I love his toughness and leadership but I just think he's not the best option

Re: Who will be our starting QB against Temple?

CDM has said that he wants a balanced attack 50/50 run/pass, now people assume that we're just gonna be a running team but from what I've heard from people close to the program is that we're gonna throw it a lot more then what is assumed...in the league that we play in that you MUST be able to pass the football and Patton struggles to throw downfield and he holds on to the football WAY too long and I just don't think he fits into a Pro style offense with west coast philosophies, I just think he's gonna slide down the depth chart with the guys coming in and Rivers being here..just my opinion of what I've seen with my two eyes

Re: Who will be our starting QB against Temple?

Very true.

I am not sure why some Vandy fans, including some on this board, think we are going to be some smashmouth offense. Mason has said from day one, even at his introduction speech this year, that his goal is balance. As a former defensive coordinator, he knows that a 50/50 balance is the best offense to keep defenses honest. While we certainly may run the ball more this year because our strength on offense is the running game versus the last couple of years, I don't think that means in any way that Mason is the second coming of Woody Hayes.
