Anyone else a little worried about the lack of commits?

Anyone else a little worried about the lack of commits?

I like the staff and I know we are taking a small class. But I can't deny feeling a little anxious about only having 3 commits at this time in the process without many guys that seem like a commit could be imminent. Anyone else feel the same way?

Right now a commit is buying "a pig in a poke" with Vandy if they are wanting to play football. Let coach actually coach a game or 3 and win a few games so the kids can see if Vandy is a good fit for them.

I get what you're saying, but a commitment from a kid doesn't mean all that much these days.  All a commitment would do is make certain poaches try that much harder to get in a kid's head.

After seeing what this staff was able to do in their "two-minute drill" earlier this year, I remain confident that they will perform admirably with regard to 2015 recruiting.

Re: Anyone else a little worried about the lack of commits?

I'm not.  I understand we have to be selective due to numbers, so I'd rather take our time and aim high.  Hopefully we get Josh Smith and the class takes off this fall as people see what Mason is doing.

There is a lot of groundwork being laid, regardless of commits.  Consider that we had 9 commits on Jan 20 last year after JF napalmed the class.

Yes, and I'm pretty sure if we had 9, (say seven 3* and two 4*) those same people that say they are not worried would be saying how this staff is tearing it up.

Re: Anyone else a little worried about the lack of commits?

I'm just worried that with kids committing earlier and earlier. Most of the higher profile kids are locked up by mid season. Even with the amount of decommitting these days, the majority of kids don't flip (last year was a unique situation). Maybe I'm too far out of the loop, but the main thing that concerns me is the seemingly small amount of players that we are "in on" so to speak. I can count on one maybe two hands kids that are considering us in a top 5 and are relatively close to committing (We have been dropped out by players like Waller and St.Brown, academic kids that would be great to be in final consideration for like Northwestern).

While the staff did do a good job finishing up the recruiting cycle last season. It makes me anxious to rely on pulling out a last minute commit and relying on sleeper recruits that we think have been undervalued or undiscovered.

All you "worry warts" worry to your hearts content...I hope you are losing sleep at night, too...then maybe that'll be less time for you on this board "worrying" over something that you have a negative amount of control over...

Not worried or concerned....anxious to see who all we get, also wish it was sooner....but.......I have full faith in this staff. Again a new staff with little time did well this past Feb. We are selective as we have only 15 spots. Most of the really good players wait till the near the end. I feel like though if one really top recruit commits many others will follow. Also as stated it's not easy recruiting when you have not even Coached game.

My faith is in CDM & staff!

Don't push the panic button yet, but it is a bit disheartening that he isn't locking down any local talent.  If J. Smith doesn't Anchor Down, it could get bad.  Good news is that signing day is a long way off.

Not at all, By the way from what I see on social and other resources we are well ahead of where the old poach was at this time in his stint.

Not that hard....just some are sunshine pumpers and gonna say they are happy with it either way. I've often wondered how people were so enamored with the last staff and their recruiting tactics and methods and said that's the way it has to be done for VU to be successful, yet are also the first to say this staff is doing it the way it has to be done for VU to be successful, when they couldn't be more polar opposites. Only one way can be the way to do it at VU IMO, and time will tell, but that's why Mason and crew make the big bucks I guess. I know, I'm about to hear about how players fit into a "system" and all that, but I only believe that to a certain degree. That's becoming a tired argument already, right up there with sleepers and under the radar no star guys. I do wish we had about half in hand right now, because with the right ones aboard they can sure help with recruiting the rest. Would be really nice if Smith were to Anchor Down next month.

I know it'll be alright in the end, but it's tough to lose local players to our competition like yesterday. Again, my opinion.

Revisit this thread after the opening and the VU cookout. Nobody should be worried.

Darien Bryant transferring.....

Per a Mr SEC article today....He graduated, so he will have 2 years of eligibility left....Right now we seem to have more going than coming, but I have no doubt those scholarships will ultimately be filled by long, athletic men!

Re: Anyone else a little worried about the lack of commits?

Do I wish we had 20 5- and 4-star guys committed...  yes.  Is it realistic, with all the crap that's being thrown Vanderbilt's way about how we're going to be the worst in the SEC, our program sucks, James Franklin was the only decent part of our program and he's gone...  No.  Not to mention, we took a pretty big class this year and red-shirted, what, 20 guys.  We're pretty set, and I don't know if too many guys are sold we're going to continue to be successful.  Mason isn't quite the loud-mouth, brash guy Franklin was.  We're also only getting 15-ish guys in the class, so we've got to be patient if we don't want to just pull offers later.

Sumner County, U R going to get run completely off this board if you continue to question the VU machine.

Folks can talk about system player, 2 star under the radar guys, etc all day long.  Except for a very few exceptions, the teams which recruit the highest rated players usually win the most games.

There is a reason most VU fans are enamored and tremendously excited about our redshirt freshmen who are going to hit the field this year, they were the highest ranked class in modern history at VU.

If this staff does not continue to bring in some very good talent, we will be in trouble in the long run---unless, Coach Mason proves that he can win with lower rated classes the way Franklin did, or the way Pinkel has at Missouri.  There is not in between, he better be the equivalent motivator of the previous staff (who had our guys ready to run through brick walls for them) or start bring in classes which compete with other SEC schools and are not consistently ranked #13 or 14 in the conference, where this class currently sits.

You have to do one or both. And none of us know at this point what the future holds in this regard.

Go Dores, Anchor Down
