Has A Walk On Ever Become A Significant Starter?

I have wondered this for a while.....was Joe Staley originally a walk on?

Franklin helped make Jordy Nelson a good one at K-State.

J.J Watt walked on at Wisconsin after playing one year of tight end at Central Michigan.

Richard Kent, if you're counting special teams.

Clay Matthews (Packers) walked on at Southern Cal.

We have 2 walk-on linebackers who got a lot of playing time this season. Kellen Williams was the main back up at middle linebacker until he got hurt, and Casey Hughes was one of our best kickoff coverage men. They are by far the best walk-ons we have had in a long time. Trey Wilkins is also supposed to be pretty good.

Joe would have been considered a gray shirt if such a definition was in place in 1979. Still earned Freshman All american as a defensive end weighing 200 lbs.

I was mainly referring to Vanderbilt players.

Joe Staley was my hero....what a great player for a 200 lb DE........he had a knack to get to QB......was tough as nails!

He was a Vanderbilt player? He was a fraternity brother of mine and grew into a !st team sec linebacker by his senior year! I still give him a hard time about Herschel running over him on a sprained ankle after losing a shoe! LOL

During the Bill Pace era, I believe Lee Noel from MBA walked on and eventually became a starter.

Anyone here ever heard of Marc Panu?  Something tells me he was in the news this season about something...

Saw action in 12 games last season, but not a starter (understanding that was the OP's original criteria).

Locals Cody and Cory Sullins of White House were not recruited by anyone. The identical twins walked on at Tennessee, were three-time Academic All-SEC, completed a bachelors and masters degree in five years, and earned a scholarship for football and started side by side at center and offensive guard their senior year.

I don't like the Vols but that's a success story.

And for the record, no one in White House or Knoxville can tell them apart outside of their jersey number.

In the early 1990's John Dewitt earned a scholarship and was one of our best defensive players.

Walk-on DE at Florida State was 1st round pick...

in the NFL and may have been the 1st overall pick in the draft. Can't remember his name.

Since everyone seems to be posting about other schools, I'll note that one of Michigan's captains this year, Jordan Kovacs, started out as a walkon and not even a preferred one. He made the team from a tryout, played in his first game and WAS STARTING By the second game of his freshman year. He started for four years at safety and has a shot at the NFL. A guy making the team from a student body tryout and starting his second game at Michigan--a tribute to Kovacs but also a big indication of how bare the cupboard was for Rich Rod.

And no discussion of walkons an be had without mentioning Nebraska-a long tradition there, Bill Callahan notwithstanding. I think their star offensive guard this year started out as a walkon.

Why would it be a joke? Young men who do things right are something to be proud of, especially to do it in a program we regularly criticize for not producing student athletes.
