They can keep on living in denial if they want.

If the past had any bearing on future results, then Princeton, Holy Cross and Harvard would still be powerhouses. Or Colorado, or Washington, or Illinois...

Re: They have spent too much time with Jethro Tull,

It is like Franklin says when he goes into kids homes. Do you want to be a small part of somebody's tradition from years ago or do you want to be the kid that ESPN 30 for 30 interviews in 10 years and asks your opinion on how it felt to be part of a tradition building program at Vanderbilt in 2012.

Bottom line, Vanderbilt looks up and coming to recruits and Tennessee looks like the old football star barfly that now has a receding hairline and beer belly that tell people the same old story at the local bar about the great catch he made 20 years ago.

Couldn't resist putting that in big orange fonts! LOL! How true!

I saw a thread/poll on City Forums where ut was running 2nd only to Colorado for biggest has-been in college football, ahead of Auburn and Boston College.  Miami (of Florida) got a number of write-in votes.

UT is the Al Bundy of the SEC. Remember when he scored 4 TDs in one game for Polk High? Now he sells women's shoes. UT is finally running into the problem of having to sell their tradition...because these kids don't remember a time when UT was good. One of the quotes from a recruit visiting this weekend was funny: "I am more interested in Tennessee now because I didn't know anything about their tradition" ... Sure, it's a positive quote, but also goes to show that none of these kids look at UT as a powerhouse like they once were.

"Nothing outside". LOL no we don't have anything other than the best tandem in the SEC if not the nation returning in Matthews and Boyd!

Re: They have spent too much time with Jethro Tull,

The other issue they have is that they got spoiled by the Fulmer years. When Fulmer was at his height of dominance, it was only UT and Spurrier's Florida that were the powerhouses in the SEC. Which is of course, why the Florida/UT game became such an intense rival in the late 1990s, the winner basically won the SEC.

At that time, Alabama was down. Which is why Johnny Majors used to jab Fulmer in the press that he never beat a "real" Alabama football team.

Auburn was down until about 2004.

LSU was down, during the Curley Hallman/Gerry DiNardo years

South Carolina was in their pre-Spurrier era

Georgia was down during that time as well, with Ray Goff (or as Spurrier used to say, "Ray Goof")

The year UT won the National Championship, they played a 8-5 Miss State in the SEC championship game. That shows just how down the SEC West was in 1999.

Now the SEC is a murders row and Tennessee has not quite come to grips with the fact that they are no longer the top tier program in the conference. Much like the tortoise and hare story, Tennessee sat on their laurels while the rest of the SEC caught up with them and have far surpassed them in terms of success.

I believe they were talking about average ranking of recruits. I haven't looked the numbers up though so i wouldn't know..

They were using Rivals.  UT is 3.17 and Vandy is 3.13.  It is always best to wait until after NSD to claim recruiting victories.  Even then, it can change after the class comes in.  USC won a recruiting crown and then had a few never matriculate.

Re: From VOLCHAT - W/Link

Not anymore... Rivals: Vandy 3.17, Vols 3.17 (ranking: Vandy 17th, Vols 31st)
Scout: Vandy 3.08, Vols 2.74 (ranking: Vandy 17th, Vols 47th.
ESPN: Vandy 20th, Tennessee 33rd.

Seems like consensus to me.

Actually, the 247 Composite Rankings have UT at 30 and Vandy at 32.  What really matters is how the recruits respond when they get to school.  I have seen Fulmer and Kiffin finish really high only to see the class disappear within 2 years.  On another note, it is never over until the fax lady sings on NSD.

I've got to agree with SOG here.  I've never really been fascinated with recruiting, simply because it doesn't necessarily translate to success.  Great recruits turn out to be duds and unheralded 2-star players can turn out to be first round draft picks (we can turn to Richard Kovalcheck and Jay Cutler for a couple examples in our own program).  Not saying I'm not happy that we're in the running for highly touted players, but, as they say in the finance world, "past performance is not a guarantee of future success."  Glad to see the recruiting accolades, but I'm far more concerned with the final season record every year.  A great team is a great team, whether it's all 5* kids or all 2* kids.  I'm concerned with the product on the field (as well as making sure we're doing it the right way).
