This program is in a death spiral

This program is in a death spiral

More losing = less fans, lower attendace, less money, less tv coverage, less recruiting, loss of tradition
and then

less fans, lower attendace, less money, less tv coverage, less recruiting, loss of tradition = more and more losing

We are in a death spiral.

It is like a medical patient who has a heart attack. The first heart attack makes you more suceptible to problems. Then the more problems you have the more suceptible you are to having another heart attack.

LR basketball is caught in a viscious cycle right now. Losing begets problems. Then problems beget more losing. Then more and more losing begets more and more problems. Then more and more and more problems beget more and more and more losing.

The problems all feed off of each other. Down and down we go.

WBB is much more vulnerable to falling off the map than FB or MBB. Just a few "off" years and the next thing you know you are in the grand canyon looking up.

I shudder to think how bad our attendance will be next year.

Yea, it really is time for a change...
don't even follow their games...but looking at the box scores and standings it is obvious we need new leadership

Re: This program is in a death spiral

It's been a long time since every major sporting team (and I will include baseball in this) at Texas Tech were all bad and at the bottom of the conference. You have to go back to the SWC days to have that happen. Even then I don't if all of them at same time have been this bad.

The mens basketball team will get it turned arund. The verditct is still out on the baseball team since it just started but it has been a bad year all around to be a fan of Texas Tech. The most dissappointing team this year has been the Lady Raiders. I thought we would improve on last year. Boy, was I ever wrong. Complacency will set in by fans, players, and coaches if this trend by this team continues another year. It may be already happening at this point.

There really is no excuse why this team shouldn't be competing for the top spot in the Big 12. We once had a reputation, we have history, we have a great arena, we have great fans, and we do have the ability to get top recruits in here. With this team it's like watching the same movie over and over thinking there is going to be a different ending when you know it's going to end up with the same terrible ending.

As the author of this thread put it, we are in a death spriral and need something to end the spiral.

Re: This program is in a death spiral

I see some hope for Tech teams to finish at .500 or above in a few sports:  baseball, softball?, m & w tennis.  Other than that.....

I just hope that the athletic department doesn't believe that the "zeenith" or "maximum capibility" of the athletic programs is to make .500 in conference.

It appears they might since Curry had been with Tech 5 years and never had won .500 in the Big 12 until last year when the team was .500.  Apparently, the athletic director et al. were so excited over a .500 finish and finally making the NCAA tourney that they gave the Curry's 5 year extensions.

Return a lot of what?

Will they be better, worse, or the same?

You hit the nail on the head eetnbreath. This team doesn't have the talent to compete in the Big12. I seen enough tonight to see how bad we really are. I have never seen a team miss so many bunny shots and go through so many scoring droughts. Two players that played their hearts out-- Chyna and Mo.

And shame on Kierra for letting her team down. Her career is done at Tech I imagine. I am truly disappointed with her this year.

That's the problem with the squad. Bad shot selection and no proven shooter. I had high hopes for this team, but those hopes were shot out like in a round of skeet shooting. I love Lady Raider basketball but accepting this style of play is hard to swallow. They should have made the tourney this season, and if left out, it would be disappointing.

RE: This program is in a death spiral

Throughout conference play, a lot of the so called shots look more like prayers to me. I kept hoping I was wrong about Curry but everytime I watch it just reinforces my believe, she is not the answer. Last year I think the rep of the Big 12 got us into the ncaa as much as the play of the team. And with us hosting next year, I don't think we can afford to bring in someone new. So we will be hoping Curry can finally figure how to lead this team.  Just don't get our hopes to high.

I thnk last season, after looking at this season, that Tina Wickett was our most important player, perhaps the most important in the program.  When she finally was able to get on the court after sitting out a year, our season took a different direction, even with the Big12 slump.

Earlier this season those shots were falling, the players were finishing....sumpt'en hoppen'd.

Re: This program is in a death spiral

Wickett was a 6'4" player who would take the ball toward the goal.  We really don't have that now although that is what Nobles will try to do.  Unfortunately, Nobles doesn't have the shot to score other than a layup and she is the best Tech has as at 5 or 4 for next year.  Blair humbly said that he felt Nobles was overmatched by Bone.

Tech does not have any significant inside players for next year.  Curry has no confidence in Walker or Schneider.  Schneider didn't even get in the blow out embarassment at A & M.  Will she  be back on the team next year?  Baker is too short at 6' to match up with the 4's and 5's in the Big 12.  Tech can do well against the preseason patsys as they have been for the last few years.

What is the prognosis for the LR's bb program?  Curry will be here at least 2 years before Tech can buy her out.  Then any new coach would need 2-3 years to try to rebuild the program.

Is there any kool-aid or rose colored glasses that can cure this problem?

Re: This program is in a death spiral

You know, when Div. 1 football teams go through bad times (any team come to mind?), and the head coach has been there long enough to get past the honeymoon, recruit their own players, put in their schemes, certain things happen depending on fan/economic/administration/political unrest:

Phase 1:       Nothing happens
Phase 2:       Minor coaches get replaced
Phase 3:       Major assistant coaches get replaced and offenses and defenses are changed
Phase 4:       Head coaches are fired and replaced with a new culture in mind or a coach with a history of success or an alum that fits in with the loyalty factor.

In football, head coaches are usually replaced after this progression, which can be hastened by factors such as internal politics, a drastic dropoff in attendance and fan support, and/or prolonged non-competitive teams, marked by several uncompetitive games during a season.

I follow University of Georgia Football because I live close to Athens, and their football coach Mark Richt has gone through all the phases, only to rebound in the last year.  When you say Tech where I live, it's Georgia Techfrown   He's a good coach, IMO, but with football in the SE Conference the phases and fan unrest are amplified.

If Tech is not in a position to buy out a lengthy contract, we need to go to Phase 3, that is, force the head coach to clean house and Hocutt can do that now, not at the end of the 12/13 season.
I think his endorcement of Curry this week hurt his ability to push her around like she needs to be.

Their record is 17/11 at this point with two league games remaining and at least one in the conference tournament.

i love the Lady Raders too and I agree with your assessment.  One thing I did notice and I was watching for it was when we were outrebounded there wasn't a whole lot of effort there.  Some of the problem is just effort. Maybe they are showing effort and are just lost at times but whatever it is, the team would be bounced in the first round of the NCAA Tournament even if we were to get in by what I am seeing out there.

What showed so much promise in the beginning and even the first week of conference play is ending with a thud. Tech is in good company though. Texas is right there with them. I don't know what UT fans are thinking but probably the same thing Tech fans are going through. Both these coaches came from winning programs and are finding very little success in the Big 12. I realize UT has been to more tournaments lately than Tech but the two teams are becoming mirror images of each other. Two great programs in the Big 12 who were on top at one time, now  in the cellar of the Big 12.

Me thinks, the girls have the talent to compete.  Me thinks the coaching staff doesn't know how to motivate and / or do recognize the problems and their root cause and / or don't know how to fix the problems.   Which says the coaches and the coaching efforts are the PROBLEM.  They are suppose to know how to get the best from the players....at all times...  Shame on them.
