I would fire Deb Patterson. She's been in the bottom of the Big 12 for years now.

2-time Big 12 Coach of the Year, 2002 & 2008
She started there about the time the Big 12 came together, give or take a year.

K-State's conference record during the Big 12 era:

1997  9-7   5th (tie)
1998  4-12  9th (3-way tie)
1999  7-9   8th (tie)
2000  6-10  8th
2001  2-14 11th (tie for last)
2002 11-5   3rd (tie)
2003 14-2   2nd
2004 14-2   1st (tie)
2005 12-4   3rd (tie)
2006  8-8   6th (tie)
2007  4-12 11th (tie for last)
2008 13-3   1st
2009 10-6   5th
2010  5-11  8th (3-way tie)
2011 10-6   3rd (tie)
2012  9-9   4th (tie)
2013  5-13  8th (tie)
2014  5-13  8th (tie)

Wow, I found this on Wiki:

Deb Patterson is the former head women's basketball coach at Kansas State. She was relieved of her coaching duties on March 9th, 2014. She is the all-time winningest coach in school history. On December 20, 2008 she won her 250th career game.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deb_Patterson

That's today's date.

I haven't seen anything official. Anyone can post anything on Wiki. But, it could be true.

Brenda VanLengen     @BrendaVanLengen

Shocked to see the release that Deb Patterson was "relieved of her duties" at @kstatewbb

Wow. I'm shocked too.
She had some trouble recruiting top players, especially recently, but she can COACH.  One of the best coaches in the country IMO.

Re: Big 12 School Making a Coaching Change?

Some things I've read-message board chatter...

-KSU was 85-80 in the last 5 years but she had a losing record in the Big 12 in that time.

-Patterson was given a 5 year contract in 2009.  She was making $600,000 this season under that contract.  There are no other media reports of a contract extension of that 5 year deal before this season.

-Patterson was set to receive a bonus of $125,000 if she was still the coach on April 14, 2014 under the terms of the 2009 contract.

-Kamie Ethridge is the only coach listed on the KSU website roster page tonight.

-Patterson was at KSU for 18 years, has 350 wins, made the NCAA tournament 9 times and the Sweet 16 in 2002.  She has two Big 12 championships.

-As competitive as her teams were in the Big 12, the NCAA tournament was a challenge.  It probably didn't help that KSU dominated KU in women's basketball for many years but KU has been to the Sweet 16 the past two years.

-Patterson and Ethridge were assistant coaches on the 1993 Vanderbilt team that lost to Tech in the NCAA semi-finals.

-KSU had 6 freshmen on the roster this season and technically was the youngest team in the big 12 beating the average age of Tech's roster by a month or so.   They lost Jr. Haley Texada to a knee injury earlier this season.

Re: Big 12 School Making a Coaching Change?

There was turmoil at KSU wbb in 2006 between Deb Patterson and star player Kendra Wecker after Wecker graduated.

Wecker pretty much dumped on Patterson about all sorts of things including emotional abuse, mandatory religious meetings required of the team, and shutting her out cold from the program after her senior season.

Mechelle Voepel wrote a pretty damning article in the Kansas City paper as she discusses here:

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncw/...tory?id=2609272

Patterson has had some high profile transfers out of her program as Voepel mentions.

Many thought Patterson and KSU were toast after that public expose in 2006.  Patterson actually got a contract extension in 2006 and another in 2009.  But she never bounced back completely, thus the record over the past 5 years.

I always suspected that bad publicity in 2006 was karma for KSU having a good old time at the United Spirit Arena after KSU won in LBK in 2005 and carried on with all kinds of loud celebration and dancing on the court while the Tech team was trying to sing the school song after the game.

Funny, I think Wecker was introduced at halftime of the game Tech played in Manhattan this season when KSU honored the 10 year anniversary of the 2003-04 team's accomplishments.

DblT81, thank you for posting....when I saw that Patterson had been run off in the paper this morning I was shocked, given that her teams (like Iowa State's) always seemed to be competitive and overachieving.  Until I read the Voepel (sp?) article, I had not realized that not only had their been many player transfers but many changes of assistant coaches as well.

My theory about coaching staffs IN ANY SPORT is that when you start seeing churn at the assistant coaching level it says a lot of things about the Head Coach, which are usually mostly negative.  Behind the scenes, Patterson may have been pretty insufferable which can catch up to you over time....Bob Knight's antics at Indiana were exposed by a disgruntled assistant coach, who turned over the tape to CNN which showed him choking a player that turned out to be a tipping point in how he was viewed at that school (wonder whatever happened to him, btw, oh wait)....Texas Monthly did a great piece about 5 months or so ago about the situation at the University of Texas and their fired track coach, Bev Kearney....you read it and it is hard to gin up much sympathy for Kearney and her lawsuit....in coaching, there is a pretty fine line between between being a borderline tyrant who squeezes the most out of their team's collective talent without completely destroying the psyches of all those in their sphere of influence or someone who becomes so unbearable that people decide that can't take the abuse anymore....when your coaches leave without even having another job in hand (as the ESPN article suggests) then perhaps it suggests how poisonous the atmosphere had become at that place.

That and every time a coach leaves a program, the hater's claws come out and for the next few days, that coach never did anything right.  Something the coach did once 10 years ago is made out to be an every day occurrence.  I have no idea what went on behind the scenes at KSU but I suspect it was about half way between what I assumed it was and what a lot of the stories are that I've read.

I will say, I never forgot that celebration incident.

Replacing a coach is never easy.  I think we had an easy transition with Candi coming home and it has still been a difficult year.  I hope KSU is able to find a good coach to replace Deb. I wish them and her the best going forward.

Good point above.

She had a nice long run.  Like Kristy Curry found out, when you are making $600k/year, your program needs to be competitive.

RE: Big 12 School Making a Coaching Change?

Patterson hadn't done anything in the past 6 years. As soon as she got that contract extension, everything went downhill. Sound familiar? I understand she WAS a great coach, but she isn't one now IMO. Yes, she can teach but she cant recruit. To be a great coach you have to be able to do both.

Her style of play is more suited for the Big 10. Did anyone watch the Big 10 finals yesterday? Her style would have fit well in that system. The Big 12 is more of an athletic style of basketball, something that Patterson never recruited to.

Re: Big 12 School Making a Coaching Change?

I think Patterson's greatest attribute was her ability to exploit an opponent's weakness and game plan around her own team's weakness.

Curry played that man-to-man defense and I watched for umpteen years Patterson's team back-door the LRs to death.  She put Shalee Lehning in situations to be a rebounding machine (on a team lacking height) by teaching the rest of her players to block out on shots better than any team I've ever seen.  She got her players to execute game plans so her team was competitive in or won games they probably wouldn't otherwise be close.

Last year Deb won 5 Big 12 games with so many injuries, defections and no players above 6'0, I thought it was a heck of a coaching job.  This year she won 5 games with a very young team (although more experienced than the LRs due to last year's short roster).  Both were great coaching jobs IMO.  But she perhaps shouldn't have been in those personnel situations to begin with.

In the previous discussion of athleticism vs fundamentals, Patterson might just be an example of a great fundamentals coach who can't win big consistently in a conference like the Big 12 without the athletes.

Some of the KSU fans said she wasn't good at player development, but I'm not sure if that is correct or not.  Certainly her game planning masked that as a problem if it was one.

Basically her inability to recruit better did her in.  She did great with all the local Kansas girls in the early 2000's that helped her win Big 12 titles.  But the issues with Wecker and other players may have tainted her ability to sign those local greats since then.

Big 10 might be an option - lots of underperforming teams there.  Or a Christian supported private school.

Re: Big 12 School Making a Coaching Change?

I agree DblT81, I think she's a good coach, but for whatever reason, she could not get the athletic talent it takes to win big in the B12. I always loved her guard play. She's had some good ones that could absolutely make some of our teams look silly. Lehnig, Wecker and Laurie Koene were just outstanding. Wecker is one of my all-time favorite players from the B12. I'm sure she will get some opportunities.

Twitter is rumbling that Jeff Mittie will be hired to replace Deb Pattersin at KSU. Not confirmed but these Twiiter tales usually have wings.

His bio says Jeff Mittie is originally from Blue Springs Missouri, a suburb of Kansas City and a 2 hour drive to Manhattan, Kansas.

And he could keep all the same ties.

Or he could coach out the WNIT and wait till the end of this month and see if Bonnie Henrickson gets her contract renewed.  It is only an hour drive from Lawrence Kansas to Blue Springs.  He would have to get new ties though.

Done deal. His style of play and player type is sure different from what they're used to. It should be interesting.

Now who will get the TCU job I wonder? One of the best recruiting territories in the country.
