o$u makes a yawner of a hire....
Division II Shippensburg (PA) offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich is Gundy's man to replace Todd Monken, who kept Oklahoma State's offense in the top five nationally in each of the past two seasons.
IMO, they should have just promoted Wickline.
Not sure that I'm all that impressed with their DC either-- you know, the guy who got lit up by Arizona.....
Granted, Gundy has proved me wrong many times before, to be sure, but maybe the law of averages catches up with him.

I thought they got rid of the dc because he was too old.

Gundy deserves the benefit of the doubt before anyone bashes him. His track record for coordinators the past few seasons is off the charts. No, my alt name is not cowboylance.

Re: o$u makes a yawner of a hire....
As I said, he's done a good job hiring assistants-- and has proven me wrong. With that said, RE: monken, I think a lot of OCs could have done what he did when he stepped in 2011. I don't think they fall off a cliff by any means, but the difference, as we saw, between them going 8-5 and 10 plus wins could just be a matter of a few points here and there. Glass half full-- they are not that far away. Glass half empty-- they couldn't get over the hump with Monken last year, anything less won't help matters. Before anyone wants to trash Gundy for hiring a no-name from a small school, don't forget Chip Kelly was OC at New Hampshire just seven short years ago. Not saying Yurcich is the next Chip Kelly, but good coaches can come from the smaller schools.

RE: o$u makes a yawner of a hire....
If Gundy did not promote a guy, there is probably a reason. Being the offensive coordinator is a very hard job. Some guys are great coaches who are just not cut out to to be a coordinator.

Re: o$u makes a yawner of a hire....
Yeah, as I mentioned in the post, Gundy has a good track record with assistants. As I mentioned, I doubt it means that you will drop your scoring average 10 points. But it could mean three points and in this league that can mean the difference between 7-10 wins. So, benefit of the doubt-- sure, I'll give him that, but IMO there's some doubt with both hires. I agree -- he's earned the benefit of the doubt on hiring good position coaches. Doesn't mean this guy will be good, but Gundy has a good track record of bringing in guys who know what they're doing.

Re: o$u makes a yawner of a hire....
Gundy did not hire those previous Coordinators.
Boone and/or his guys did.
Gundy is just the HC by name.....stands up for the press conferences. They took the real coaching out of his hands 4 years ago or so when they hired Holgorsen. Both of them thought that they were going to call the plays...until Boone stepped in and told Gundy that's why he hired Dana.

then maybe there's more to this-- those guys are doing a good job of finding assistants and maybe that's why gundy was flirting with other schools. redbird59 wrote: Gundy did not hire those previous Coordinators.

Exactly. He is most likely getting a little frustrated playing solataire on his computer. Boone keeps telling him to just sit back.....and he will make him famous.....and rich. zebbie09 wrote: then maybe there's more to this-- those guys are doing a good job of finding assistants and maybe that's why gundy was flirting with other schools.

Do you have any proof of this? redbird59 wrote: Exactly. He is most likely getting a little frustrated playing solataire on his computer.

Re: o$u makes a yawner of a hire....
Again-- before anybody who's seen or is about to see this thread (cowboylance), IF I had to bet, it's very difficult to bet against Gundy or whomever is making the decisions. BUT, as I have mentioned, a few point differential here and there can make a big difference at the end of the year.

No. Strong theory based on the fact he was replaced at OC when they were struggling. He announced to the media when Holdgorson was hired that he would still be calling the plays. Holgorson interviewed with the media in another location almost at the same time, said he would not be coming if he was not calling the plays. Pretty obvious someone was pulling the strings besides Gundy. It is true though that the formulas have worked.......and to the benefit of Gundy.

Yet in the two seasons since he's been gone, OSU has gone 20-6 and won a conference title and a BCS bowl (not to mention outscoring Tech by a combined score of 125-27). Yep, clearly Holgy's system is so good the plays just call themselves.
