Rysheed ("Black Jesus") Jordan

Posted: 2/18/2013 5:27 PM

Rysheed ("Black Jesus") Jordan

I am a 1962 Temple grad.  I was a 3 Letter winner for 3 years during my time there.  Gymnastics, Track & Field (pole Vault and broad jump, now called long jump) and Swimming & Diving, (mostly diving).  Along with several other gymnasts I was also a cheerleader at the football and basketball games.  We did tumbling and trampoline exhibitions during time outs and after TD’s.  I was in the gym one afternoon and watched Harry Litwack personally teaching John Baum a post up move.  I believe it was his freshman year.

The reason that I am telling you all this is to show you that I have been around a long time.

I have read a lot about Jesus and heard a lot of tales.  I actually visited the Holy Land and lived in Israel for six months in 1962 - 1963, even working on the excavation team at Masada for a few weeks.  And in all my lifetime I have never heard any mention of HIS abilities as a basketball player, probably because he wasn’t very good at it.

Please don’t misunderstand me!  I mean absolutely no harm in this statement.  Jesus had (has) some wonderful skills: curing Leprosy, atoning for sins, etc.  But basketball was not one of them.

From what little I have read about Rysheed Jordan, he is a fine young man, has a nice family who he is close to, and is an above average student.  I have little doubt that he will achieve much, both on the court and off.  However, I must admit that the only interest I have in him is what he can bring to Temple from a basketball standpoint.

Therefore I would prefer that he find a new nickname.  One that I can relate to and get excited about from a basketball standpoint.  A nickname that gives me, as a Temple fan, something that indicates the type of game or player that he might aspire to become.

I’m sure some of you can come up with other ideas.  For me “Black Larry Bird” comes to mind.

Interesting keysmark. Inviting some serious (or even humorous) responses and suggestions about "BJ's"possible new Twitter name (Please note however that this is a purely hypothetical/academic exercise: any change made by "BJ" himself is more likely to be in the direction of "Above The Lord" rather than "In Lieu of the Lord").

Fine young lad for me, it remains to be seen.

To me Josh Brown is a fine young man. Ditto Scootie Randall, Anthony Lee, Rahlir Hollis-Jefferson,Will Cummings, TJ DiLeo (my goodness even Khalif the past 6 months) and several other young athletes whose Twitter, non-Twitter, on- Court and off-court body of work unanimously indicates such class.

No way I'm ready to say that about "BJ". No way do I lust for him to wear the C & W no matter how many "stars" he has been assigned. And if you have CLOSELY followed "The World According to BJ" on Twitter and elsewhere, for the past 8 months, you'll understand exactly why I feel this way.

PS..feel free to reach out to "Jordan2" (how's that one?) with your suggestions . This can be done on Twitter if you care (dare?) to do so.

Tempmike,

I do not post, and very rarely read anything on Twitter, other than the recent welcomes from Coach Rhule to his new players on LOI Day.

However you may feel free, if you wish, to relay my suggestions on my behalf.

RE: Rysheed ("Black Jesus") Jordan

I agree with you and think that with Josh Brown and Kyle Green, the Owls may have strong talent at the guard positions.  Josh has said he'd like to play some PG, which the team needs very much.  There are still openings, for several positions, and there is room for Jordan to play a lot of minutes, but would he be a net addition or a net distraction overall?

Guys who are flashy superstars don't always blend well with teammates, especially if they have an inflated sense of self-importance.  Michael Jordan and Julius Erving are two fine examples of superstars who spoke softly and showed humility and appreciation for their teammates and the fans.

At Temple, we have just gone through a couple of years with KW, who has created problems for the team associated with his inflated sense of self-importance.  He caused a lot of headaches when he threatened to leave the team and transfer unless he got a ton of playing time.  Then, when he got the playing time and had no one to compete with, his defensive intensity decreased to the point that it is at now, where his weak perimeter defense allows opponents to hit 50, 60, 70% of their 3 pt attempts.   So, now, even though he has managed to become the "1 man show" in a lot of recent games, the team has had to find ways to make sure other players get involved in the offense.  A 1 man team can rarely or ever win against the best opponents.

Not sure how it would be, though, if Jordan does come to Temple.  The Temple atmosphere might help him to ease up on being "the one," since Temple is famed for emphasizing that there is quality in everyone.   Maybe he'll pick up on that if he comes to Temple.   Also, some of the KW chenanigans have taught the coaches a few things about how to avoid being overly focused on any one player.

Jesus, himself spent so much time outdoors that his skin would have been dark brown.  In that respect, he might have been called a black man by those from northern latitudes, and paintings of him would show that he had the pigment of a black man, whose ancestors had lived for centuries in Africa (Egypt).

So "Black Jesus" may be an accurate description of the actual Jesus (a form of Joshua pronounced there as "Yeshu" or "Yeshua") the Nazarene.  It's Joshua with the J pronounced as "Y."    Jesus was a black man of african (egyptian) and levantine (Judea, Galilee, Samaria, Philistine region, adjacent to Africa) descent.

It could be a nickname that is intended to honor Jesus/Yeshua who had dark brown or black pigmentation.   It could be a statement of intention to be as much like the actual black Jesus as he can be.   Maybe it's all well intentioned.  If so, cool.

On the other hand, to a lot of people, it's considered a little bit "too much" to use a nickname like that.  It's so far-out and hard to interpret.  Can you imagine cheers like "Go, Black Jesus!" or "Take us to heaven!" or "(Black) Jesus saves!."

Oh, what impolite cheers might be put up against Black Jesus by opposing fans.  One shudders to think of the affrontery of the Big 5 rollouts against him, or the vile taunts from drunken fans.  It could bring out the worst from some people in the stands.

There is also a kind of "showboat" phenomenon, like sending uncensored twitters to those following him, taking his private decision about universities to a very public forum, and making each of the schools seem like little more than his chosen stomping ground, as if it will be considered "Jordan's back yard."

Can he also be the kind of self-less team-oriented hard-working player and fierce defender that has made Temple basketball what it is, with tough defense, team spirit, and balanced scoring)?

We may find out soon.  If he were to come to Temple, perhaps others will come to join him, and our style would start to look a lot more like Syracuse or Kentucky, b-ball hollywood.

Keysmark:

You are either a liar; a Nova troll; or a writer of fiction.  Perhaps you are all three.

In 1962, John Baum was a HS sophomore at West Philadelphia HS who didn't play HS BB.  If I remember correctly, John was a soccer player, and a very good baseball player (center field) in HS. You never saw Litwack teaching JB a post-up move.  LItwack was a Jewish BB League legend (two-hand jump shot).  Jay Norman taught Baum his moves, and he didn't look like The Chief.

John, I believe, was recruited by Skippy Wilson while playing at Pierce JC.  He roomed with another great Owl, Clarence Brookins, who was that team's Big 5 HOF guard.

John, I believe, graduated in 1969 with me.

You, on the other hand should be ashamed of yourself, for mocking Rysheed Jordan.

You could visit the Holy Land yearly, bathe in the Sea of Galilee, have a McDonald's in Capernum,  cry your eyes out at the Wailing Wall, fly to Rome to help the Pope see in the Holy See, but it would all be to no avail, because you are a Nova troll.  An old, pathetic one at that.

As a former Johnson Hall 89er (I still have my beer mug), I sincerely hope the Black Jesus comes to Temple, and takes us to the Final Four.

Go Owls.

I would like to see Rysheed Jordan select Temple. Does anyone have any useful updates or is his decision still in the works and top secret information/classified. Go Owls. Beat LaSalle.

Athabasca, you are way off base about Khalif.  It has been well documented through the local and national media that Fran asked him to transfer, going as far as giving him a list of 5 schools and offering to drive him to anyone of them.  He made a commitment to stay here and earned his playing time by becoming the A-10 sixth man of the year as a soph.

I wish all of our players had the drive and will to win and clutch ability that KW has. He does the little things and the big things to help our team win. He is a pleasure to watch play. Go Owls, Beat LaSalle.

What degree at Temple requires a three or four year graduate assistant.

I would like to take the word black out of whatever nickname he has. Good nicknames are names like "Shake em bake Macon", "Pepe Sanchez" "Scootie", etc. "Black Larry Bird" is just horrible. Hmmm ... alot of my Spanish speaking friends are named Jesus ...

I was just trying to lighten things up around here with what I thought was a little humor.  I guess I was wrong.
