Time for a new coach

Posted: 2/15/2013 1:31 PM

Time for a new coach

The game has passed Dunphy by, both on and off the court.

Dunphy has repeatedly shown an inability to land the bigger recruits.  This will continue as long as he clings to his assinine policy of not playing freshman.  Today's kids want to play and they want to play immediately.  The better recruits are not going to come here knowing in advance that they're going to sit on their asses for the entire first year.

On the court he refuses to make adjustments even when his decisions are failing miserably.  He's too stubborn to use a zone even when his man to man defense is getting beat relentlessly.  And when the team is in trouble, unless almost every other coach, he rarely will call a timeout to try to break the momentum.

We used to hardly ever lose at the LC.  So far this year we've lost to such horrible teams as Canisius, St. Bonaventure, and Duquesne, iwth more home losses likely to come.

This is completely unacceptable and it's time for a change!

I'm guessing english is not your 1st language.  I have no idea what the hell you're trying to say.  Try again, this time with punctuation and no caveman speak.

Like most I am not happy with Dunphy's coaching and/or recruiting. I also wish he would take some responsibility as the leader of the team. However that being said I think he still deserves the chance to turn this yr. around and probably to have two losing seasons in a row before he resigns or is fired.  Go Owls. Beat U.Mass.

BB - is a good friend of Dunphys... hope that doesn't play in "IF" he needs to go...

RE: Time for a new coach

I made a post on here before the season posing the possibility of Aaron Mckie as the next TU coach. I was practically told to f off. That coaching change looks a little bit more appealing now huh?

Next year is lining up to be the worst year in TU bball history with the quality of The Big East & KW graduating.  I'm not even sure Black Jesus could save us at this point.

Dunphy is under contract through 2018. Too much contract to eat. If he were to "retire", here are potential candidates...

1. Aaron McKie
2. Rick Brunson
3. Chris Collins
4. Bruiser Flint
5. Seth Greenberg

I would be ok with that... but would he want to leave an NBA gig for Temple HC?

As far as worst years for Temple Bball. I think of JC's last few when we were strictly an NIT team and Fran's first year when we didn't even make the NIT.

But sounds like next year may be worse?

Obviously you can't say anything for sure but based off of pure speculation I'm assuming the Temple HC job is one Aaron would jump at.

Can you imagine the recruiting pitch in trying to get some of the top local talent to stay home and go to Temple? From Simon Gratz to Temple to the Sixers his story would be a great recruiting pitch.

Hey Black Jesus want to know what it was like playing for Chaney? Playing in an elite 8? Playing in the NBA finals? Being a first round pick? Being 6th man of the year? Playing alongside Allen Iverson?

Man that would be a exciting to see him steering the ship here.

Dunphy is O'Brien's guy. As long as he wants the job it is likely his.

Whenever succession becomes a real topic of discussion, I hope that McKie, Brunson, Macon, Perry, et. al. get a fair shot. It would be great to look around the LC and see Chaney in the stands the way you see other HOF coaches in other major programs.

Look no further than UCONN for the recent precedent. Kevin Ollie from '92-'95 has the reigns and has done a very credible job taking over for a legend. Good enough that the 1st year deal got a midseason, multi-year extension.

UCONN looks like it has some real buzz, despite the sanctions. Might be the path that Temple should also follow.

You sold me, but Bradshaw is going to stick with Fran for at least... two more years, my guess anyway.

No more of just hiring Temple or Philly guys.. Can Aaron McKie coach?  Who knows!

If Dunphy goes (doubtful)  do a true national search for the best.

I still think Chaney's influence on his successor hampered the hiring.  He kept pushing for Dean Demopolous so I feel Bradshaw had to appease him to keep him quiet.

Re: Time for a new coach

Yeah. It would be just awful to go back and revisit the Chaney era. We dominated Villanova and the Big 5. We recruited the top PL talent almost every year. We had five MCDAA's. We moved up to a top flight on campus arena. We dominated the A-10 and almost always made the NCAA Tournament. We won at least one NCAA game most years and had five Elite Eight finishes. No one wanted any part of us come post season play. We were nationally relevant. The coach produced a HOF resume in his tenure on N Broad.

Why in the world would we want to have continued any of that?

NocturnOwl..all good points. However, don't forget to mention the many players we from the PL who had who needed to sit out a semester because they were ineligible or close to it.

RE: Time for a new coach

Without a doubt, it is time for one and Dunph to go. The guy can not relate to the type of talent that will come to Temple when it comes to recruiting. He has lost the team this year as well. Do not be surprised to not only have a really weak recruiting class come in, but for him to to lose 2 or 3 guys to transfer from this years team. It's time to go.

The only 2 guys I would look at to replace him are, Mckie and Brunson. I know for a fact that a lot of former players were upset that Fran got the job over Brunson.

RE: Time for a new coach

Let's hope it was a joke! Wasn't Drexel supposed to be the best team in the city this season according to Bruiser???  I give them this, they may be better than Penn. Says a lot about his coaching ability. Bruiser sucks.
