The NOAA also cited 2010 tied 2005 as the warmest year on record. Perhaps the terminology of global warming was not the best bet, but you'd be hard-pressed to deny there have been significant changes in the climate. I visited SC for two weeks and it snowed twice, the extremes are just becoming more extreme.

"Global warming" does not predict everywhere will get warmer. Just that average global temps will rise. Which they are doing. The biggest problem IMO is that the oceans are acidifying and getting warmer. This will change what kind of creatures live in it. Warm, highly acidic oceans do not support the kind of marine life we are used to and indeed consume.

I've heard many people this winter tell me that climate change is "not science" and that it's just a myth. If it's just a myth, then why are "permanently frozen" glaciers receeding at a higher rate than ever in recorded history?

To me, the bigger question is whether or not the sudden, mass intrusion of trillions of gallons of fresh water from melting ice pack affects the oceans as well. Stories I have seen speculate that that in and of itself may be the cause of more damage than anything else. Everything from stopping the gulf stream to changing the salinity of the water to a point where, as you pointed out, many species can no longer survive. If things are going in that direction...with those kinds of slow death results.. I think id almost rather just have a big meteor hit us and take us out in one fell swoop.

CITL, I don't think we will need the meteor in our lifetimes, so I would just as soon that not happen, but maybe 10-12 generations down the road they may need to wish upon a death star. If we don't find a way to kill ourselves by then.

Re: Coldest Winter in 1000 Years
It's been about 15 years ago that Al Gore said Florida would be underwater within 20 years, so I'm looking for something really bad to happen soon...Al was betting on the weather being really hot, but Mother Nature has fooled him....so the solution has been to now blame the cold weather on global warming but call it something else ...like "climate change"...either way it is the fault of the capitalists in the world...Al can still solve this problem if you just send him all of your cash and really get behind his sensible plan to buy and sell air (carbon).........it's all a matter of educating the public, and if Al happens to make a small profit, so much the better...

Re: Coldest Winter in 1000 Years
How anyone can't see that 7 billion+ people are affecting the climate is beyond me. As temperatures slowly rise, ocean levels go up and ocean water becomes warmer and more acidic, it'll be that much harder to not believe. Most people probably didn't know that over 75% of the earth's corral reefs have been destroyed or are imperiled. Without corral reefs, fishing stocks will drop, shorelines will lack natural protection from storms and erosion and biological diversity will plummet. These are simple facts.
Fortunately more is being done to protect what reefs are still healthy and intact and much is being done to help grow new corrals to encourage new reef building. Life will go on but we must ask ourselves how difficult we intend to make it on our descendants.

It is no argument against climate change science that stupid people think it will happen and pretend to know when it will happen.

I've been enjoying the HBO series and will have to read the books as well.

RE: Coldest Winter in 1000 Years
When I was in grade school in the 70s they used to pass out a little newsletter magazine for kids. I distinctly remember one warning of the "coming ice age". The accompanying cartoon showed woolly mammoths wandering amongst the skyscrapers of Manhattan. Maybe they'll be right with the scare tactics this time but I doubt it.
BTW, I thought the new catchall was "global weirding". "Climate change" is passe.
