Question for DougJolley.... (2 votes)
Or anyone else
Regarding conference realignment & potential SEC expansion
Let's say a scenario occurs where the Big 10 at least gets UVA & maybe another, say maybe BC. Then the SEC gets VaTech
Is it necessarily a slam dunk, in your opinion, that the ACC implodes? Meaning FSU, Clemson & a whole band is going to leave for the Big 12?
Or would there be a chance the remaining ACC could stick together, meaning UNC, Duke, FSU, Clemson, Miami etc etc stick together & the SEC get VaTech/NCSU?
The ACC schools leaving for the Big 12 is 100% about money, I don't believe any of them really want to go there. Could the ACC salvage itself with those particular defections & do things to close the money gap not between the ACC & SEC/Big10 but the ACC & Big 12, which would negate a need for a move. Salvaging itself with things like unequal revenue sharing with particular schools, FSU/Clemson, & a potential ACC Network.
Is it feasible that UNC/Duke could tell the SEC, "thanks but no thanks, we like the ACC" & then the SEC move onto VaTech/NCSU & the ACC live on from there?

Could UNC (and Duke) make a decision most would question and stay with a sinking ACC ship? Sadly for my UNC friends and Duke niece, that's a very real possibility.
If Virginia and anyone else follows Maryland and jets for the B1G, I fully expect Florida State and Clemson to make an announcement they're moving to the Big 12.
If Virginia Tech is announced for the SEC, UNC is on the clock. If they don't go, NC State won't blink. They're gone.
I see nothing that, given further ACC defections, could financially salvage things at that point.

thank u Doug
so it sounds like once the Big 10 moves it's all over but the shouting.
I fully expect the Big 10 to move in relative short order. Will be interesting to see who the SEC would pick up if the dominoes begin to fall.

Re: Question for DougJolley....
The problem with all these scenarios is they all assume someone will move in response to another team jumping first.
Trust me, the B!G has "come calling" plenty. As has the SEC, though not as overtly. What should be obvious at this point is that the ACC, though certainly not perfect, is the first and best choice for every single one of the current and new ACC teams for a number of reasons.
So, those predicting and/or hoping for the ACC's demise will continue to be disappointed. In the next few years, the ACC will be adding more new "markets" than any other existing conference has in a similar period.
I expect with a few years' hindsight, it will become clear whether the B!G or ACC bet on the right horses:
Rutgers + UMd
OR
Syr + Pitt + ND* + UofL
Seems clear to be already.

That'll help the ACC become a premier basketball conference.
