Blog: SEC Expansion: UNC, most likely
I'm going to take a lot of heat for this one from my fellow Gamecocks for the initial conclusion, but read to the end, and stick with me for the rest of the series. I played it right up the middle, looking at all aspects from the big picture, and taking in both perspectives when more than one is referenced. I look forward to your feedback.

Any fanbase that is inclined to use the word "odious" wont fit in with the SEC...

Re: Blog: SEC Expansion: UNC, most likely
Thanks for what you've brought to our board Doug.
I'd say that if we had to choose between the two, most Tar Heel sports fans would certainly choose the the SEC over the B!G. "Football first" fans - and there are many - might jump at the chance to join the SEC.
But overall, the ACC is still the best fit for all sports, and I like the potential of the conference with the new teams coming in. The potential of a scheduling alliance with the B12 is interesting. I could foresee the B12 teams playing one ACC opponent every year on a rotating basis. With their 10 teams and ND as a partial, every ACC team would be guaranteed to play ND or a B12 opponent OOC every year. That could work, and would be beneficial to each conference.
Looking forward to the opener next year. I think Spurrier is several years ahead of us, and our defense is suspect, so a road win there would be a tall order. I do think our offense could make it interesting, though.

Re: Blog: SEC Expansion: UNC, most likely
Sorry, Doug I just must disagree, I simply can't stomach the idea. I will always have hope that UNC doesn't join the SEC. The taters or NCSU would be a much better fit than UNC and do we really want to be reminded more often of their arrogant attitude in general, not to mention the way they've always treated us. The ACC and the state of N.C. can keep them, good riddens to bad rubbish!

You really think Spurrier is several years ahead of you all...hummm... really, shouldn't that have read the entire South Carolina football program is several year ahead, I mean really. I'm looking forward to watching J.D. make it real interesting for your offense. I wonder how much Fedora will run his mouth off publicly this summer as we get closer to the game. I've been waiting for this rematch since the last time we beat you in chapel hill...

Just offering one perspective on Doug's blog since he was talking about my team.
I don't think there is anything disrespectful in my post, but to each his own.

Doug, legitimate question. What year did UNotC trademark the word "Carolina"?
Go Gamecocks!!!

I love logical arguments
and that was logical. Well done.
Let me also say this:
UNC in the SEC would be GREAT for South Carolina. Instant rival and it would help basketball tremendously. I was at the Colonial Center for the first time today and while I was quite pleased with the Georgia effort, I could also envision the Colonial Center jammed with fans and becoming a very tough place to play. If UNC played there every year, you wouldn't be able to find a ticket.
I grew up going to the Frank, but damn if that Colonial Center isn't something else. Count me as impressed.
Obviously Kentucky, but the only other programs in the SEC that "get" college basketball and understand the nuances of atmosphere, etc are Arkansas, Missouri, Vandy, maybe Tennessee and South Carolina.

Re: Blog: SEC Expansion: UNC, most likely (1 vote)
UNC (and Duke, to a lesser extent) was the main reason, of many, for why we left the ACC.
We should raise tee total hell if Slive looks at them seriously. It has been a wonderful relief to be rid of them for 40+ years. I would hate for their arrogant sense of entitlement to fester intself upon the SEC. They would be a horrible fit. We do not need them to make the SEC basketball better. Let the ACC take a dagger to the heart off after the Big XII takes a couple of schools away (Clempson, FSU) and then we can get a better cultural fan base and a more football interested schools in NC State and VT, instead, if additional expansion is unavoidable. The ACC will be left as a hybrid of the old Big East and weaker ACC teams (Miami, WF, Duke, UVA), essentially a Northern based conference with members in the South. Their football would grow weaker and overall interest will continue to decline, in every sport. Force UNC into the Big 10. It will not rival the SEC in the South and that is where our own strength lies.
The ACC is an ancient enemy and UNC is the de facto head of that conference. You never help an enemy, never. Kick them when they are down and then step on their throats.

Brat, I love ya, but if UNC wants the SEC
The SEC would be thrilled for all of the reasons outlined by Doug. Carolina, South, that is, is not the only school that feuded with or had issues with another school. Many similar issues, if not much worse, happen all the time in the SEC. This NC St and Va Tech Thing is hilarious too. Of course those 2 would be suitable and fine for the SEC, with or without UNC who is plan A. Step on their throat when you play them, don't be petty about 40 yrs ago.

Re: Blog: SEC Expansion: UNC, most likely
I don't think any interest that we expressed in either the SEC or B!G would be turned away. But I expect the expanded ACC to thrive, and am intrigued by the prospect of a scheduling alliance with the B12. Ten games a year maybe? B12 teams play one ACC team/yr? We'll see.
There aren't any of the current ACC teams that would prefer other realistic options, so seems like realignment may be done for awhile. I don't doubt that Clemson and FSU would leave for the SEC, but I don't see either getting an offer.

Re: Blog: SEC Expansion: UNC, most likely
Gag unto me with a spoon. My allegiance to the SEC is out the window the day UNC joins the SEC. Actually, I may just have to switch over to being only a Hawkeye fan, because quite frankly, the notion of being in the same conference as that delusional, pretentious, trust-fund-riddled fan base is about the most appalling thing I can imagine happening.
I will be alone in my thoughts on this, but I would take CLEMSON (begrudgingly, mind you) before I ever looked at UNC. My days of caring about the SEC and even perhaps college football end the day UNC and USC are in the same conference.

Re: Blog: SEC Expansion: UNC, most likely
The expanded ACC will soon be the old Big East.
The Big 12 is playing footsies with the ACC to protect their flank. Delaney could care less about whether or not the Big 12 and ACC are talking. UVA and GT are on the clock. Once the Maryland thing is resolved, there will be a feeding frenzy.
I will not be shocked if both the SEC and Big 10 end up with 20 schools each. If that is a possibility then UNC, UVA, NC St, Duke and Va Tech should try to package themselves together.
Slive and Delaney both want Virginia and North Carolina tv markets. If it means taking more than 2, then they will if necessary.
20 is much easier to schedule than 18. 16 is not necessarily the end game.

Re: Blog: SEC Expansion: UNC, most likely
So Teddy, you gonna welcome mens/womens lacrosse, mens soccer with open arms to Jawja? Remember, the more you add a gender program, the more the other gender has to be balanced with a sport. The more you add programs, the more money it takes from your athletic department budget.
Which will cut short some of the programs Jawja has long favored; like golf, tennis and gymnastics which are more akin to the SEC and our lifestyle. I know at Carolina, we are happy with our gender split sports as they stand. Keeps the AD's budget intact too.
The other Carolina might be better off with their long standing traditions in men's/women's LAX and men's soccer as the B1G which keeps them in the running for the Capital One Cup. There are a host of teams in those gender sports already formed in the B1G. Their teams wouldn't miss a beat and I'd hate it for them that our upstart programs would impede the further progress of such wonderful UnotC sporting events!
Go Gamecocks!!!

Nothing you or I say
Makes a damn bit of difference. UNC is wanted by Slive and if there is a mutual interest then the Heels would be voted in after about a 45 second discussion.
I think soccer is a commie sport, but yeah, lacrosse would be cool. I know both soccer and lacrosse are big in Atlanta.
To add, you guys are hung up on issues with a school and league before cable tv existed. Do you really think that your conference brethren give a rats arse about the Mike Grosso issue?
UNC in the SEC would have one vote, just like you guys.

UNotC will cost us. You'd get as much out of bringing in State, without the baggage.
Four in a row, Teddy. Four in a row.

I'd like them both. Just got off the phone with my dad who echoes your sentiments. Y'all need to get ready though. It could certainly happen.

Re: Blog: SEC Expansion: UNC, most likely
NO UNC. Adding NC State and VT (Virginia Tech) would be a better fit longterm for the SEC and expand to 16 teams. I rather add Duke to the SEC before unc . Duke would be another vandy in the SEC. unc is always involved in too many scandals which would bring bad press/publicity to the SEC. Duke appears to play by the NCAA rules when it comes to their athletic programs. Adding NC State and Oklahoma to the SEC would be Outstanding. Oklahoma should look at how Texas A&M improved their football program by leaving the Big 12 and coming to the SEC. Oklahoma could finally get away from under Texas' shadow just like Texas A&M did by joining the SEC. Texas Longhorns runs the Big 12 conference and everyone else in that conference gets treated like second class members, they even have their own TV network (Longhorn network) to prove it. Wakeup Oklahoma, join the SEC if invited.
