Can someone with great football knowledge help me understand.

Can someone with great football knowledge help me understand.

I'm a girl, so my football acumen prob isn't the best, but please tell me why our OC continues to run the ball up the middle when clearly it does not work.  Also, can someone tell me why we have abandoned the uptempo of the no huddle.....frustrating!  #Mikeyurich, #Mikegundy

Re: Can someone with great football knowledge help me

Although the play worked a few times, the reason was to set up other plays.  The safety cheats up, corners lean toward the middle and it opens up outside runs and the passing game.

The offense looked rusty early but scored about a point a minute over the final 34 minutes of play.

I would add that with their speed sideline to sideline it was going to be tough to get the corner.

I thought FSU wore down as the game went on opening the run in the middle.

The only adjustment I would suggest to MY would be to run more out of the pistol with a lead blocker.

I is not unusual for a team to slow down the tempo a bit when there are a lot of young or inexperienced players in the line up......both of these fit our team.

I kept watching the FSU fans in the stands and they were troubled....not happy and sassy but they looked confused and bewildered...I kind of loved that part of the game wink

Re: Can someone with great football knowledge help me

There is no explanation. Unless our goal is to fall behind so far we can not catch up. It was a way too conservative approach. End of story. We had all summer to game plan and that is what we came up with? Just sad. Now when he finally started calling plays in the second qtr we got on track. That had nothing to do with running up the middle. We have to mix it up and get some momentum and use our talented WRs. We didn't do that at all in the 1st qtr.

Even Thurman Thomas tweeted his displeasure on the play calls. It was obvious to anyone with football knowledge that those 1st qtr calls were a waste of time and a waste of important possessions.

Two things - First, you have made an error if you came to this board looking for someone with great football knowledge! noidea

Second, you do run some plays to set up other plays - and also to see what you can do.  In the second half we began to have success running in the interior line.

And that was after we decided to open up and pass. You pass to set up the run, you run to set up the pass. Mix it up. They weren't scared of us passing at all and we played right to their expectations in the 1st qtr. We wasted the entire 1st qtr and anyone who doesn't see that is just blind.

I would agree with Tra but I would have pulled a couple of gadget plays or double reverses. We were in the game for the last 3 quarters and really had a chance a tremendous upset. I would have done something crazy!!

agreed, what happened to the flee flicker, or reverse, or counter play, or throwback to the fullback, or half back pass or anything?

Thurman tweeted at 17-0.  A bit silly to call it "sad" after we scored 31 on FSU.  (Our score vs FSU was almost exactly the score in the BCS Championship.  34-31.)

What we could do in the second half was because of what we did the first half.

First game of season...we start a bunch making their first start...against NC...and damn near win.

And we hear a chorus of criticism?  disbelief

Re: Can someone with great football knowledge help me

Yeah...just think, we may have scored more and even won if we had a good plan out the gate. I guess it is silly to have a plan to win a game and try to score early when you know you will need points. Smh

Again, the plays were really pretty good after the 1st qtr. But that game plan is why we lose big games. Ultra conservative mentality.......there have been too many games where we should be further ahead and let teams hang around and pull it out on us.

And yeah, almost everything that could go wrong did...and still, we were right there. It was a very good game by our guys. Luckily, our D kept us in it early. I think we grew up Sat night and have a shot at running the table. But at 17-0, the play calling was the only thing silly at that time.

Perhaps a little(or a lot) with would help your strategic thinking. Did you think maybe those 1st quarter gut runs set up the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th quarter successes? duuuhhh

Maybe because the criticism is based in disappointment about what clearly could have been, in the hopes that some learning come from the loss? I think both the coaches and players will apply what they learned while taking great inspiration for their level of play that took last year's National Champ right to the wire. The toughest challenge will be maintaining that Bedlam level of intensity.

Re: Can someone with great football knowledge help me understand

We were very uncreative on 1st downs in the first half. It was like we were playing scared as offensive coaches in the calling. Yes you need to set up other plays, but finally we kept them guessing in the second half.
