Ford Outcoached Self

Ford Outcoached Self

Something to ponder.....

And no, I don't think Ford is a better coach than Bill Self, BUT, since Ford takes a lot of criticism (rightly so) when the team plays poorly, shouldn't he get a lot of credit for the big win?

Ford constantly switching defenses (effectively), having his guys prepared for key plays Kansas like to run, motivating to perform in one of the toughest venues in existence.......   combined with Self coming up with no answer for Smart (particularly late in the game when Smart was killing them on the boards) and not getting his guys over the top of the screens when Markel was lighting it up.  Along with other examples of bad game planning.......  <insert your observation here>

So the question is, did Ford outcoach Self on Saturday?

Kansas turnovers may have played a part, that and knowing OSU hadn't won a road game.

Re: Ford Outcoached Self

I don't know if Ford outcoached Self. He certainly did a good job changing up the defense. We received two special performances from Brown and Smart, and I would say those two gentlemen receive most of the credit for their play....But Ford did a nice job of calling timeouts before Kansas could get on some big runs. He changed up the defense. He stuck with a struggling Forte who came up big down the stretch as well.

I did not see Self do anything that I thought was particularly poor throughout the game. As a coach, there are times you are handcuffed when two players (particularly with Brown and Smart's physical skills) are putting on those type of performances.

RE: Ford Outcoached Self

Self not a great coach? Gee I wonder how he won a national championship and beat a great team with a supposedly great coach. I guess it was a good thing Holder couldn't hire him away from Kansas.
Self played for one of the best player coaches ever, Hanson, coached under one of the very best recruiters, Hamilton, learned offense at Kansas under Paul Brown and defense under Eddie at OSU. If he doesn't have the credentials to be a great coach, great coaches don't exist. I only rank coach K better and that may have more to do with his years in coaching.

Im not sure if this is a serious statement considering you put the whinking icon. If it is serious, I would strongly disagree. Bill Self took Tulsa to an elite 8 and showed what a great coach he was at ORU and TU.

He's serious. He's completely wrong, but he's serious. He uses wink's as periods most of the time.

No reason to kill Self...he's one of our own. And his credentials speak otherwise. Most likely sour grapes on the idea he didn't come here.

I would like to play for National Championships...one game does not make a career especially with smart at pg.

Re: Ford Outcoached Self

Looking at that one game, I think the answer was yes. And it's not like Self laid an egg; he got McLemore more involved offensively to lead the comeback charge, and we didn't get nearly as many good looks from 3 in the second half as we did in the first. But what Ford did was more impressive. The OP did a fine job of listing some of the coaching moves he made, to which I would add his juggling of the big men when they were in foul trouble, and just the sheer force of will needed to keep answering. And sure, the players were the ones who ultimately got it done, but TF did a great job of strategically using his timeouts to lessen crowd momentum and and rally the guys to keep calm and focused when it looked like KU could take over and run away with it. Self is a great coach, and Ford has a long way to go to reach that caliber. But as someone who's been critical of Ford's in-game coaching in the past, I found him very impressive Saturday.

Wow. Well I guess I will just laugh from here on out when he makes any comments about anything basketball.

Re: Ford Outcoached Self

One thing that hurt KU Saturday was Self's use of his timeouts. At the end he didn't have any left. He used his last TO well before the end.
And I thought his timeouts really didn't stop our momentum at any point in the game.

A program attracting top talent doesn't succeed without a good coach.  UT is a prime example.  Don't get me wrong Rick Barnes is a great guy but not a great coach. That right there shows that it still takes a great coach to turn the top talent into a top team.

Re: Ford Outcoached Self

Ford did not outcoach Self. We shot several bad shots like usual, Markel Brown just happened to be knocking down everything in the first half. On the flip side, KU was missing shots they normally don't and playing lackluster with several turnovers (it's basketball, it happens, that's why we play the games).

Marcus Smart is the real deal and truly closed out the game. No coaching makes him do that, it's just pure talent and basketball IQ on his part (it's scary to think he could be better with better coaching).

I do love the enthusiasm, and I do think Ford did a decent job as well as the whole team performing well on the road. However, it is few and far between games we will light it up scoring like that and score near the 80's at home or away in conference play.

Agreed ford out coached self on Saturday. And it sickens me that we have fans that will defend self to hell because he's one of our own(even though he turned us down to coach Kansas)....meanwhile throw our "actual" own under he bus at every turn.

Maybe they're also defending him because he's a national championship-winning coach whose teams are perennial contenders, and anyone saying he's not that great is kind of ridiculous.

But I do agree that Ford got the best of him Saturday.
