Newest Committ: Dawson Bassett

Dawson Bassett

I couldnt be more proud or happier to say my brother is the newest commit for OSU football  # Godisgood # DawsonBassett

Just spoke with new OSU commitment Dawson Bassett. Needless to say he is very excited about continuing the Bassett tradition in Stillwater.

Dawson Bassett

When the phone rang Wednesday morning and Dawson Bassett saw the number he had a feeling that this was the call he'd been waiting for, for a long time. When he answered and heard the voice of Oklahoma State head football coach Mike Gundy, he knew it was his call. It didn't take the senior from Tuttle (Okla.) High School long to give Gundy his verbal commitment.

Bassett, the younger brother of graduating senior defensive end Cooper Bassett, had visited Missouri last weekend. He also was being pursued very hard by state schools as former Oklahoma State player and now NEO A&M Junior College assistant coach Zach Allen had been in Tuttle High School on Tuesday trying to sell Bassett on pursuing his dreams. Central Oklahoma was checking on him seemingly every other day.

Hearing Gundy's voice offering him the opportunity to play at Oklahoma State was just what he was hoping to hear.

"Like I had told you before this was what I was hoping for," said Bassett. "I know my Mom and Dad were hoping this would happen, and Cooper was thinking there was a good chance of it.

"To get this opportunity is what I was dreaming of. I've grown up watching how great Oklahoma State has been for Cooper and how much he loves it. My family is very much an Oklahoma State family."

When his mom called Cooper to tell him about the news, she reportedly was so excited that Cooper couldn't understand what she was trying to tell him. That's the measure of excitement that this news brought to the Bassetts.

Oklahoma State is getting an interesting athlete in Bassett, who as the first and maybe the only in-state member of the recruiting class.

Bassett is a linebacker on defense and likely will play there at Oklahoma State. But he is so athletic that Tuttle used him as a wide receiver.

Bassett is 6-4, 220 pounds and is a 4.7 in the forty (pushing 4.6 and change).

Actually, Bassett said he ran a 4.6 in the forty at the Missouri camp.

He finished the season earning first-team Oklahoma Coaches Association All-State honors and All-Little City credit at linebacker with 106 tackles, four sacks and three interceptions. As a receiver, he caught 32 passes for 780 yards and 11 touchdowns. He was also honorable mention All-State in The Oklahoman.

"I know that I can play linebacker and that I can be a contributor on special teams, and I really am prepared to do anything they need me to do," said Bassett, who was also recruited by the likes of Kansas and North Texas.

"I'm just very happy that this turned out the way it did. It's nice when your dream comes true."

With the commitment the Bassett family becomes another in the line of families that have had brothers both play at Oklahoma State, joining families like the Woods, the Koenigs, and the Currys.

Re: Newest Committ: Dawson Bassett

For any who doubt lets be clear about a few things. Nobody is a sure thing, no matter the number of stars. There are a few things that the coaches know about Basset. He comes from a great family loyal to OSU. He is willing to play any position at any time. He will be more inclined to go to every practice, give 100% and not complain. He is less likely to become disenchanted. He is more likely to go to class and keep his grades up. He is less likely to embarrase OSU on or off campus.

And guess what, he has the size and speed to develop into a great player. He is the best player available at the time the ship was offered. What else can you ask for.

Welcome aboard and best of luck.

RE: Newest Committ: Dawson Bassett

Did you not just read the part about how he just wrapped up his visit to Missouri? The kid is 6'4", 220lbs, and runs a sub 4.7 in the 40. Not to mention he is from a great family. Kids from small schools tend to get overlooked.

But you are so much smarter than the winningest coach in OSU history.

Re: Newest Committ: Dawson Bassett

This is the kind of young man who will in all likelihood be in the program for five years, he will be a good student and citizen, he will work hard in the weight room and on the field. He will be an asset to the program and contribute to the continued success of Oklahoma State University football like his brother. Go Pokes!

Let's wait and see.  I predict he ends up playing somewhere and contributing.  I don't know what position, but I bet he plays.

Some fans were not excited about Mays last year either. Gundy doesn't give schlorships to be second team.

From a personality standpoint...Cooper Bassett was my favorite Cowboy in the past several years...the guy was GREAT with kids...GREAT with the media...and an absolutely GREAT Ambassador for Oklahoma State University to the outside world...IF Dawson is half the young man that his brother is...he's worth two scholarships... no matter what he does on the field of play...Here's hoping he puts 200% into the team like big brother and he could be a very very good player for us.  I'm excited for Dawson and his parents...Welcome Aboard Dawson, may Oklahoma State be everything and more that you are hoping for...Go and make us proud!

Wow, watch his HUDL, he looks pretty great. I'm suprised he's been overlooked. His brother shows he might be a good candidate to bulk up well. I just don't know if he should be a receiver like Charlie Moore like Blake Jackson's role or a linebacker. All his highlights are great, better than many we have signed. Will be fun to watch him develop, and I'm guessing he redshirted then starts for 3 or 4 years somewhere.

I was excited when I saw the news, I know Cooper has been hoping his brother would get an opportunity.  I like the idea as others have stated that someone like Dawson will contribute more to the program than any 5 star prospect that has been on campus.

I saw a 4.6 40... AT his size you almost have to play him at DE. I think he'll end up being a pretty dang good pass rusher
