Let me be the first to congratulate you on your Rose Bowl win

Perhaps a tad premature, but based on the pillow-fight airing on Fox right now in the "Big 10 Championship Game", I'm feeling good about your chances. Call me crazy.

In all seriousness, congrats on a great season, much respect.  Hope our programs can bring a couple BCS Bowl wins home to the conference next month.

He didn't insult us at all.      And that's your response?    Really?

Don't underestimate Wisconsin, that's what Nebraska did and look how it turned out for them.

Darn right that is my response to his TITLE. Not his post. Can you read?

Look at the title...He is congratulating us on winning a game NOT played yet. Stupid title, indeed!

I'm not underestimating Wisconsin and I'm not overestimating Stanford.

Pardon me for stating the obvious, but the Big 10 had a very down year, and Wisconsin was, at best, the conference's 4th best team.  They backed their way into this game with 5 losses.

Stanford is an excellent team.  Once again, pardon me for stating the obvious.

I'll come back on January 2nd and post again, and maybe then the title of my entry won't piss off your buddy so much.

Stanford may be an excellent team, but in point of fact you are underestimating Wisconsin.  You mention their 5 losses, but then neglected to mention the nature of them.  Those 5 losses were by a combined 6 points in regulation, including 3 in OT.  Haven't lost by more than a TD in almost 3 years, and that was by 10 points.  Haven't been beaten by more than 10 in almost 4.  Nothing is assured against Wisconsin.  Wisconsin has lost numerous games they should have won by choking and questionable game management.  If trends continue, they'll be in striking distance at the end of the game, and it's just a matter of if the players and coaches keep their heads.  Talent vs. Talent there's no gap here and hasn't been for a team v. Wisconsin in a long time.

Yes....   I was fully aware what you were responding to.   He was trying to be funny.   He was not being literal.    I can read fine.  The poster even made reference to his title being a joke in his post.   But that appears to have been lost on you.

OK...

Not sure how the results of games which occurred 4 years ago should have any relevance to my analysis of this year's Wisconsin team, in comparison to this year's Stanford team.

The Big 10 is weak. It's crap. I don't care how close their losses were, they are losses. And they are losses to teams that are not remotely elite.
Since you are so focused on the close nature of their in-conference losses, it's only fair to simultaneously shine a light on a few of their non-conference HOME wins: Utah State (by 2), Northern Iowa (by 5) and UTEP (by 11).  Goes both ways.

Stanford is playing on a level that would allow them to go wire to wire with any team in the country, and thus, they are elite.  Wisconsin is not elite, and it's a complete waste of time to try and provide info that proves otherwise.
Good luck. I hope I'm right, and I'm sure you do too.

Wisky is horrible... Trust me. Congratulations. This is the easiest team in the BCS. Stop the running game and it's over. Thank you NCAA!

Wish we could be playing you. Not sure Tatoo-gate makes any sense to me.

Not to mention that our defense excels at stopping the power run.  They're probably pumped to not have to deal with another spread team.  Those jumbo-formation play actions that confused nebraska every so much are what our D sees in practice every day.

If Wisconsin is horrible, does that make Ohio State just plain awful... it took overtime for you to beat them.

Uh, the game was in Madison, not Columbus. OSU is 12-0. You've got a legitimate beef about the play of the Big 10 this year.

OSU is not one of those teams, trust me.

Yes, Wisconsin has some close losses, thus skewing their 5 losses.  If Stanford had Hogan ready sooner, we would be playing Alabama next month...so what's your point.  We are essentially two plays away from being undefeated.  Grats on your Nebraska win, but it is a gift for you to be in the Rose Bowl this year.

Re: Let me be the first to congratulate you on your Rose Bowl

Wisconsin is a one-dimensional football team. Stack the box, play assignment defense and you win. Wisconsin trys to take advantage of an over pursuing defense, with their bread and butter - counter trap. The also run the bootleg pass to the TE, to the weak side. As long as the OLB manages his responsibilities, it shouldnt hurt you.
Stanford by 7, maybe 10 points. IMO.

Re: Let me be the first to congratulate you on your Rose Bowl

If all we have to do is stop the run and have the OLB play well, then I am pretty confident that Stanford will win.

I think that Wisconsin is probably tougher than that, but overall this seems like a good match up for Stanford.  I would prefer to be playing Ohio State, but at least this gives us a chance that avenge our 2000 loss (not that anyone on the team cares about that :)).

It doesn't go both ways.  During the conference season they dominated in all their wins, and their losses were all by 3 or less points.  In the pre-conference season they had a new OL coach (among numerous new coaches) who ran a zone blocking scheme at the traditionally most power oriented run school in the nation.  He got canned after the Oregon State game and they reinstalled the power system.  Also, they were employing Danny O'Brien as QB.  He was hot garbage.  He sucked in his one opportunity in the Big Ten too against MSU, not leading the offense anywhere in the 2nd half, after moving the ball decently in the first half and earning the lead with Stave as QB.  Stave doesn't get injured and they lose one or less game in conference.  The Badgers didn't lose one game he finished.  And after they realized O'Brien wasn't the answer even as backup QB they were much better off.

Any outside shot at a national championship was lost after the Oregon State game.  And the Big Ten Leaders Division was basically wrapped up halfway thru their schedule.  The one game afterward they had to win to put away their opposition they won by 48.  OSU beat the same team by 3.  MSU the same team by 4.  Badgers were obviously holding back plays knowing the score in conference.  OSU and PSU were ineligible.  They didn't bust out that jet sweep and Melvin Gordon hardly until that championship game, and people were calling for it all year on the Badgers' board.  Gordon had 2 touches for 66 yards and a TD against PSU, a game they lose in OT.  They win a few more games easily running half the same stuff as in the championship game, but then they'd feel like they'd lose some element of surprise for the game that counted.  It worked.  Lost to Nebraska by 3 the first time and beat them by 39 the 2nd.  Not the same team, obviously.

And you needed a punt return to get it to OT, while we were playing with our 3rd string QB and without our best defender. We dominated the stats and the LOS against the Buckeyes. What that means for the Rosebowl, who knows.

It does go both ways, my friend.  And guess what: beating crappy teams by wide margins isn't any more impressive than losing to crappy teams by narrow margins.

As far as the below highly entertaining rationalization rant, the bolded part is my personal favorite.  You're telling me that perennial national powerhouse Wisconsin beats:  UTEP, Northern Iowa University and Utah State by a combined 2.5 touchdowns, and your blaming the new O-line coach????  Wow.

Actually, you know what: I take it all back.  You've convinced me. Wisconsin is the best 5 loss team in the history of college football.  They should be headed to the BCS title game.   This damned system!   Stanford is screwed!   biggrin
