Notes: Bill Carmody Press Conference

Notes: Bill Carmody Press Conference

In a typical entertaining press conference from coach Bill Carmody, he offered up several pertinent notes heading into the exhibition opener Wednesday against U. Chicago.

- This team is packed with newcomers, but the season could very well come down to the four guys who played last year: Sobolewski, Crawford, Hearn, Marcotullio

- Sobolewski has grown into more of a vocal leader, a transformation from the guy who would quietly carry the ball up and not be heard from after.

- Tre Demps inspires some optimism with his excellent scoring ability. The redshirt freshman should fight for time at the two-guard position.

- As Chris pointed out, Carmody repeated his statement that he considers Marcotullio a sort of coaching presence on the floor. He has been "very vocal and very helpful."

- Carmody said the new guys have been somewhat inconsistent, but the coaching staff has been patient in helping their development. The season is quickly approaching and Carmody wishes he had more time to prepare.

- Wednesday will be treated as something of a real game, it seems. With so few returners, expect Carmody to shuffle players in and out. But unlike exhibitions in past season, the game against U. Chicago could be important in helping players earn minutes, at least near the beginning of the season.

- Carmody said there is a risk of glossing over things in practice, but he is "trying to accelerate (their) learning."

- Alex Olah will start at center. Carmody is coaching him up and says that he cannot dominate. Still, as a center on this team, "if you can make a layup and play 25 minutes, you get 8 points. It's easy." They have been working a great deal with him individually, especially in terms of playing with his back to the basket.

- Carmody feels comfortable playing Sanjay Lumpkin right away. He did not mention Kale Abrahamson at all, which stokes the belief that Abrahamson's development is coming along far more slowly than most expected.

- He feels comfortable going with nine guys right now. A prediction as to who those might be: Sobolewski, Hearn, Marcotullio, Demps, Crawford, Swopshire, Olah, Lumpkin, (Cerina or Turner)

- A lot more raving about Swopshire

Re: Notes: Bill Carmody Press Conference

This is the best team Northwestern University has ever seen.  The debt, athleticism, size.  We just hope that the potential the Wildcats have produces positive results.  I am confident they will exceed expectations.  Wish I could wear #25 one more season and play with this team :-)
