My Observations

I was at the Nevada game today and was left a few impressions:

 1. Look out for Arrington who is arriving as a linebacker;

 2. We finally have a solid kicking game;

 3. Offensive play calling had a lot to be desired-a number of strange calls;and

 4. Cat's are going to be a force to be reckoned with this year.

Re: My Observations

Nevada has a serious passing game, and NU is lucky to have overcome it.

The NU passing D saw what a serious passing game looks like and now knows they must play better. Nevada's leading rusher had 5 ypc, too.

CJ had a bad day, under 50 %. IMHO he'll throw 60%+ for the year, 70%+ on hot days.  We've seen him throw. In the game review, I read a phrase like, "... Northwestern's pass-happy offense..." Media slime can only say things like that when things don't work.

Nevada was very motivated and has the players to beat NU. They nearly did it. For NU, this could have easily been a crushing loss.  Instead, it's a huge W.

We compete against teams we should beat, teams that are equal to us, and teams better than we are. Nevada is an equal. Huge W.

I'm worried

Nevada is about the, hmm 7th best team that we are going to see all year. This is a QB that looked terrible against Nebraska, and a D that gave up 52 and yards and yards of O against the Huskers.

We struggled, especially in the 1st half and it was ugly. The D is not as good as advertised, I'm afraid. We will hopefully do what we should and beat Duke next weekend, but when we go up against Ohio State and Michigan in the next 2-3 weeks, we'll be going up against an entirely different level of football than what we've seen the last couple of weeks, and right now we would get smoked.

I hope Sutton isn't injured too badly and can recover. Maybe we should rest him against Duke.

Re: My Observations

From what I've seen of Michigan, they're struggling too - even more than us.

Nevada is a good team, and we had strange play calling

The Nevada passer AND receivers were good. They had quick linemen, on offense to make a hole for quick hitters and on defense to hurry Bacher.

So Nevada had a a "Bad" day against Nebraka? Nebraska probably overpowered them (and Nebraska has Keller who played for  ASU is Evanston and is a pro quality passer, which probably opened up their running game).  Nevada was rated just behind Hawaii and Boise State in the WAC this pre-season.

It seems we are still experimenting both on offense and defense. It is re-assuring that Robertson has finially become quick, I thought that was impossible. Now, if we only had a liitle better blocking.

We may be in some 40 point shootouts this year. We have the pass catchers, to score 5 or more touchdowns,  some in a hurry. Besides Peterman, Lane, Ward, etc, the good pass catchers  include  Sutton and Robertson.

The word will be back on the Big 10 Street, don't let NU stay close and give us the ball with a minute left on the clock.

As the D continues to improve - we did from the 1st to the 4th quarter Saturday - Watch for more Mims, Dinard AND Simpson, to open up the rush for the big guys up front.

You can have the best 5 blockers in the world, bring 7 players on D and someone will be free. [Ask Luis Castillo].

All I can say about play calling is that they guys upstairs call what they see - Nevada was in a coverage that confused the issue until they went to Cover 4 [prevent] at the end of the game [according to Bacher in the paper]. Anyway, Roberson proved that we could run well, even with our backup RBs, just the way Sutton promised after his first game 2 years ago

C'mon

Nevada passer and receivers didn't look that good against Nebraska.

Nebraska had Keller, but we have Bacher and Sutton. Our QB and RB are better than the Huskers.

It wasn't our O that lost this game -- I mean made us look bad. It was the D. The DL looks hugely overrated. I gotta give it up to Global -- what the hell is Ngene doing in there? Has he done anything yet? Mims should start for us, or at least play every passing down.

Our LB corp is a shambles. We should dump all the upper classmen and play Williams, Davie, and probably Jeske. I don't know how they'd do, but Dinard, Kadela, and some of the other upperclassmen look lost and/or slow, so what do we have to lose?

We need to improve in a big way, fast. Because Ohio State is in two weeks and I want to win.

Re: C'mon

I thought the D got it together once they started blitzing folks.

NU almost always gets tagged over the middle in the short zones, where LBs have to zone defend both the run and speedy WRs on short routes. Once we start putting pressure on the QBs, they have trouble completing passes.

Maybe adjusting to the "different, Pistol" offense made the guys look a little lost. I remember that RW used to hate playing an option team because the LB/CB/SAF coverages are so different. Duke runs a more traditional O, as does that next opponent after them, and our coverages should be a lot better.

Anyway, we did a pretty good job against a very high power offense who really had something to prove Saturday. Defensing the Dookies will be interesting too, but I think we'll get a better feel for how we'll play D after this Saturday's game.

Re: My Observations

Here's my beef on the play calling. Near the end of the fourth quarter, the clock winding down the Cat's are about a yard short for a first down. Do they give the ball to Robeson-nope-do they give the ball to Omar-nope- do they run the intelligent play, the quarterback sneak-nope- they give the ball to Dunsmore who hasn't touched the ball all day. Guess what: he's tripped up for a loss. Turns out Cat's win the game and the call is forgiven or forgotten by all but me. Terrible call at a critical moment in the game.

Re: My Observations

He runs for a TD and its genius

I wonder if our coaches still are not sure about pounding the ball up the middle? Dunbar never liked the QB sneak, altho Rees used to be an expert at opening the middle up. Maybe someone can ask Fitz about it in the Thursday fan sessions.

Re: My Observations

Dunsmore wasn't going anywhere since Nevada had eight (8) defenders in the box. Seemed to me that our offensive coordinator out thought himself. Just hope like everything else in life, he learned form his mistake.
