NU vs. Nevada

One for one. Cats get a shutout, despite relatively lackluster D. The bend but don't break defense, especially in the first half. The O shines, however, with a lot of passing and some running as well. Overall, a nice victory over a decent team that may be better than some realize, though more fans would've been nice. And a nice crowd in the chat room, with good discussions, despite the presence of one NE fan who was obnoxious.

So, next is Nevada, fresh off a whipping at Nebraska. They've penciled us on their schedule as a W, as we'll soon see from some of their fans coming on this forum. As one person said in the chat, "they say that the most improvement comes between the first game and second game." For us Cats, that means tuning up the D a bit to get more pressure/production out of the line, as well as the O-line opening bigger holes for Sutton et al. Nevada will be tougher than NE. For the Wolfpack, it means looking at their entire game - but they can do it. It's possible that they just didn't play well for some reason, and will come out playing fantastic this time.

We will have Trevor back, and hopefully Brendan Smith as well. No major injuries this game, meaning we'll be near full strength - except Brewer, of course.

Last week, we were pretty much on target with most of us predicting 20+ to 30+ point victory. Let's see how good we are this week. Vote what you think the score will be, and then talk about it.

    What will the score be?

  1. Poll closed on 09/09/2007
  2. Cats win big, by 30 or more: 2 votes
  3. Cats win solidly, by 20 or more: 2 votes
  4. Cats win, by 10 or more: 6 votes
  5. Cats win nailbiter: 2 votes
  6. Cats lose a nailbiter: 0 votes
  7. Cats lose by 10 or more: 0 votes
  8. Cats lose big, leaving the fans bewildered: 1 vote

Re: NU vs. Nevada

Nevada probably thinks they have NU's number based on the game last year.

They're gonna have an intense week of practice after losing to Nebraska.

NU better be prepared to compete at a higher level or Nevada will take their chips.

I expect a dog fight for 3 quarters, with NU pulling away in the 4th.

Speaking of Nebraska, I'm sure NU fans will remember Kyle Vanden-Bosch (sp?) At the Nebraska - NU bowl game, this guy single-handedly destroyed NU at RDE. He's now starting for Tennessee after a couple Pro Bowl selections.

GO CATS!

And that, of course, applies to both Northwestern and Nevada.

Northwestern played well, but Nevada will be stiffer competition.

Northwestern by about 14.

Actually if you pay a visit to our Rivals site I don't think you'll find many of us have it "penciled in" as a win.

Re: NU vs. Nevada

Every board has their optimists and pessimists [if I spell all of that right]

Nevada has a first time QB who has yet to fully grasp the Pistol offense.

On the other hand, two players from Nevada sat out that first game [the way Rees did]. They will be back, but its hard for me to imagine one player on each side [center/LB] making a big difference in all aspects of the game.

Last year, Nevada loaded the box to stop Sutton because they figured that Kafka couldn't handle the rush and pass accurately. They were right.

This year we have a QB who can handle that stuff, at least I'm pretty sure he can put up points. With no home crowd to pump them up, the Wolf Pack will have to really play up to pull off a win in Evanston.

Personally, I'm more concerned over Duke - They're itching to beat someone, and may have the defense to do it...then again, its Duke.

Re: NU vs. Nevada

Nevada's QB is actually a redshirt sophomore, so calling him a "first-timer" is a little misleading.  For the most part, we think he lived up to most of the hype he's been getting in the offseason; what killed him ultimately against Nebraska was the lack of pass protection that became worse as the game dragged on, and all the easy passes that were dropped by his receivers.  That aside, I firmly believe he'll have a better outing this week.

Coach, I wouldn't look forward to Duke. One game at a time. Look at Michigan. We need to focus on beating the Wolfpack, being ready for what they do, then only after do we look at Duke.
