3 WR's in the last week

3 WR's in the last week

The dominos fell just like the DE's in May. Like that all three are different type of players! Green has a big upside and it sounds like we also grabbed a burner and a ball hawk. I like when they are compared in style with Mack and Ebert, but hope this isn't putting unrealistic pressure on them as they start to learn the college game.

This class seems to be deep and well balanced. The staff has done a good job of getting the guys they want and getting them early before higher profile programs come calling when they miss on top 100 guys. This kind of recruiting will only help our depth and talent going forward, exciting years are ahead for Northwestern football.

Great job by Fitz and his staff.  How many more scholarships available?  The QBs we are pursuing is a national story with NU competing with ND and the SEC lite school in OSU.  I like the fact that Cameron Green and others had offers from other Big 10 squads who fall in the upper tier of the conference.

I think 1 QB, 2 DBs and a K?

I don't know what it will be but I think we will take a QB, kicker and at least 1 DB.

Re: 3 WR's in the last week

Cameron Green comes from Stevenson H.S. which was the most successful basketball and football school in Illinois in 2013-2014.  See Jaylon Brunson in basketball.  He is the highest rated incoming senior in Illinois basketball and UM or MSU looks like they will swipe him.  banghead  That is what I feel like when other teams take Illinois talent like Fred Van Vleet of Wichita State who could have gone to NU.

So this might be a pipeline to future recruits.  Also, to get a top 10-15 Illinois high school recruit is critical to future success.  Stevenson beat Justin Jackson's high school team in the state quarterfinals last year.  Fitz is stacking quality recruiting classes just like Barnett did after the Rose Bowl season of 1995 and lead to Big 10 success and title ins subsequent years.

It appears Green will fit the Christian Jones and Cameron Dickerson role in the offense and it will be interesting to compare his development against the leader of the Western Division UW and its WR that de-committed from NU in Watkins who is also a big WR.

I'd guess 1 QB (I think Darnold commits this weekend), 2 DB (JSM eventually and Isaac James) and one kicker. They have no K targets with Yoon having committed to ND, but I promise you they'll take one.

Sign me up for this right now! If it pans out this way, I think you could make a strong argument this class tops last season which I think was excellent. Nick, not feeling as confident on Darnold as you are, but I sure hope you are right on this one. Visit the key here and this guy seems like the ultimate sleeper as he sat out most of last year. Hopefully you can get a hold of him at the end of thd week for some insight. Is Jared Thomas out now, going to BC. Thought he was a good bet a couple of weeks ago.

Re: 3 WR's in the last week

I disagree with 2 DB's.  We have a plethora of db's and one of the Dowell twins is targeted there.  We have Campbell and Jones who will be seniors and we have Henry, Igwebuike, Quiero and Wetphal at safety and Harris, Van Hoose, Watkins and McShepard at CB.  We lose 3 OL and Thomas is too good to pass up.
By the way, I know it is speculation but who are the fourth year juniors who you think may not be asked back next year if any.

Re: 3 WR's in the last week

Scratchandclaw, I agree with you, but this depends on who they like. Northwestern has offers out to guys including Justice Shelton-Mosley, Isaac James, Jacob Murray, Keith Washington, potentially Aaron Garland, and I know I'm missing one other here. They would easily take two of those DBs, even with Dowell, if they had the opportunity.

I actually think Keith Washington is my deep, deep sleeper for the 2015 recruiting class. He's returning to NU at some point in July and really enjoyed his first experience. In the two or three times I've spoken with him, he focused on specific elements of his visit and loved the prospect of new facilities. My concern was that other schools would start offering him at QB, but that never happened, so he's really looking at the best schools for DB. If that visit happens and he enjoys it, I think it could be a geographic steal.

I'm 99 percent sure Jared Thomas will not commit to Northwestern. They pressured him after Lemke-Bell and Otterman. He never budged, even after his positive visit. That's an awful sign. Really awful. I've heard Boston College but can't say I know for sure. After that, the options are dry for NU. So no more OL.

The kicker thing is happening for sure.

No Darnold and it's a bit of panic. Maybe Lloyd Yates? Washington as a Wildcat QB? I didn't realize that Darnold impressed at USC until tonight. Uh oh.

Re: 3 WR's in the last week

Also saw the article about Darnold impressing at SC and have read about his preference to play in warm weather.  But doubt that he would ever see the field for SC at QB. Town was flipped by Sark from Alabama shortly after he took the SC job and is the guy SC is looking to build around in a pro set. So if Darnold realistically wants a chance to play QB, it won't be likely at SC.  Same issue - higher rated guys in the same class - at UCLA and Oregon (if Waller commits there - if he doesn't, Darnold would be the choice).  It will be interesting to see how Darnold's recruitment plays out with us where he would have a shot at playing in an offense suitable to his style.

Re: 3 WR's in the last week

All right, here are the two names to watch if Darnold commits elsewhere. Northwestern appears to like both guys quite a bit. No panic at the position.

Walford (Md.) North Point QB Brandon Battle
Oak Park (Ill.) OPRF QB Lloyd Yates

They would certainly get one of the two if Darnold bolts. I think there's still a chance, and Duke has a QB, but might be tough given all of the players. Would have to be a superb visit.

Re: 3 WR's in the last week

Battle is a strange one...last invite to Elite 11 - but zero BCS offers.  I'm guessing his size is the issue.

I think we have a chance with Darnold but it would a situation where we would be "holding our breathe" right up until signing day were he to commit.  He'd be vulnerable to a late offer by one of those top Cali schools.
Good point about Duke...TN has a QB commit as well.

I'm a bit surprised neither he or Waller hasn't jumped at the Oregon offer.  I really hope Waller pulls the trigger soon...will give a bit more clarity as to where everyone is headed...could get the dominoes falling.

*** This is my favorite part of recruiting,  btw...love the drama!

eek

Re: 3 WR's in the last week

Haven't bought into Darnold wanting to come here. Can't see him at SC as he would have a huge battle to unseat what some think might be the best QB in the class. Thought he would jump on the Oregon offer, but maybe the ducks have told him they may take 2 QB's and he would be in a similar position as at SC. Utah may still be alive if it breaks right for them. Yes, a commit would feel like a hold your breathe situation, especially with a strong fall. We will see how the visit goes. IMO if he doesn't commit soon after visit, we don't get him. I think Yates is the guy we end up with, but he is one of those late fall verbals
