PurpleWildcats National Signing Day thread

There is a lot to look forward to this week. It's almost National Signing Day, which is a busy day for PurpleWildcats.

Our morning will be spent at Maine South High School with Matt Alviti, as he faxes in the letter of intent. Later in the day, we will join Coaches Fitz and MacPherson for the Northwestern press conference. After that, we'll head to the southwest burbs to visit with Tyler Lancaster, Blake King, and Matt Harris. The night will be capped off at Tom Lemming's banquet with NCSA.

Once again, PurpleWildcats will attempt to get a story on every one of Northwestern's incoming recruits. We roll out that coverage today.

Be sure to follow along with Twitter for live updates throughout the day. I'm @CEmmaFOX and Nick is @NicholasMedline.

Of course, the only way you can enjoy this extensive coverage is with a PurpleWildcats subscription! Take advantage of our special bargain before it's gone.

Re: PurpleWildcats' National Signing Day schedule

Thrilled to be joining Signing Day coverage this year.

Chris and I will be caffeinated from 5:30 on, with articles and updates here throughout the day.

It begins with the highlight, Matt Alviti, but we're lucky to be able to check in with so many commits.

Really excited and we would, as always, love input from readers and message board users.

I know Northwestern Signing Day is not the most exciting but I'm ready for any sort of football coverage!

Look forward to talking with the coaches and the new guys throughout the day.

It's a neat opportunity.

Will be interesting if we have a surprise commit.

Ha. Wow. I don't know what we'd do if that happened.

One of my favorite stories from the year came from when Chris and I traveled to Ann Arbor for the NU-Michigan football game.

Davison suddenly decided to commit, and we stayed up for a couple of hours talking it through and doing research as Chris finished his story. WHAT A WASTE OF TIME.

Hoping any surprise – or strangely timed – commitment works better for us this time.

Speaking of Davison, David Haugh gave a shout-out to the site for our coverage of the Davison controversy.

Look forward to everyone staying glued to this forum tomorrow. Of course, we'll be tweeting and providing stories as the day progresses.

A busy day is underway. Nick and I just visited with Matt Alviti  and Maine South HC Dave Inserra. Nick has a great feature and video coming your way.

Matt Alviti, dressed in purple, met with us at Maine South HS just before 8 this morning. Seemed really enthusiastic but humble. Boasts a quiet confidence.

Nice to see the future QB of Northwestern on the big day. Story coming in minutes.

No drama in Evanston. Excited to see more of the local guys later.

Great stuff from Matt, as always, and it was fun catching up with him today. Be sure to give Nick's excellent writeup a read.

For a fun Signing Day story developing, the mother of five-star running back Alex Collins has stolen his letter of intent to Arkansas and has run away with it. This day is never boring.

Terrific setup here at Ditka's for the ceremony.

Excited for Fitz and Mac to break down some of the guys in the class. As was said on the boards, there is some uncertainty, so I'm sure any discussions is welcome.

Stick with us. Fitz expected in 10 or so.

Re: PurpleWildcats National Signing Day thread

Fitzgerald very intense about respecting the student athlete process.

He's not a fan of some recent rule changes, that's for sure.

He implied it was like marriage before dating — they're betting on people they've barley met.

"Academics first, being great kids, and then football," Fitz said.

He sees the process flipped.

Re: PurpleWildcats National Signing Day thread

While Matt Alviti is a nice prospect, I wouldn't anoint him our starting QB of the future just yet or accord him any more hype or respect than any of our other recruits.

2-star Dan Vitale made the greatest immediate impact in the 2012 class, while more heralded recruits watched from the sidelines this past season as they tried to get acclimated to the college game.

Good point. He'll have to earn it. Think he's ready to do that, though. Seems like a great recruit and great guy.

We went to visit local offensive linemen Blake King and Tyler Lancaster. Stories on the two upcoming.

And as promised, here's my (insider) piece on Blake King, the social butterfly of the 2013 Wildcats recruiting class:
