Thoughts on Colter

Thoughts on Colter Post Rating (3 votes)

After watching a replay of the Gator Bowl, I've come around closer to ECat's view of Colter. He doesn't use his hips and legs much when he throws, and his accuracy is pretty poor.

Is there any chance he can improve in those areas during the offseason? If he could show moderate improvement he'd be dangerous.

If I remember correctly, Kafka had some of the same problems. It did not look like he could throw the ball at all his freshman year certainly and then when he was pressed into duty. Usually the quarterbacks spend time with Brett Basanez in the offseason and get a tutorial from him. I imagine both Trevor and Kain will be spending time with Brett.

That was when Baz was with the Bears. I don't know if they do that any more. Maybe CJ could spend some time with them.

Kafka always had a (relatively) strong arm, certainly stronger than Colter's. In fact, I was surprised when the NFL analysis was that his arm strength was average. If I recall, Fitz recruited him after seeing him wing a ball from Centerfield or something in baseball.

Exactly right. I do not know where this stuff about Kafka not having a strong arm as a young player came from. He had alot of learning to do and had some mechanical issues, but his arm was always strong. AS much as I applaud Colter for his leadership and abilities beyond throwing the ball, he will never be a Kafka.

Comparing Kafka's freshman year to Colters 3rd year is like comparing apples to oranges. Kafka always had a gun for an arm while Colter not so much. He's had four years since his injury to improve his arm strength so I'm thinking that what you see is what you get.

I wonder about the shoulder injury Kain suffered in high school? Perhaps it has had a lasting effect on his throwing ability? If he is able to improve in the offseason, I'm pretty excited about our situation for next season with the 2 able QB's. Still, the coaches have to figure out a way of not telegraphing our offense all the time. Colter=run Siemian=pass.
