Michigan fan here

Who would you prefer to see on Saturday between Denard or Devin Gardner? Idk if you witnessed last week but Devin played pretty well. That being said, who is the more dangerous QB to defend?

Gardner's probably a better passer, if I'm not mistaken, but Denard is the better runner.

We had more trouble with a less than 100% Marquise Gray than their other more passing proficient QB, so I'd say we'd rather have Gardner, even over a less than 100% Gardner. If we hadn't knocked Gray's ass out of the game, not sure we would have won. If Denard plays, hope we knock his ass out of the game too (without seriously injuring him of course).

Re: Michigan fan here

Lol. Thanks for the response. Gardner is still mobile. Very. He adds an extra dimension to the offense. Obviously the hope is DR runs crazy or Gardner has a balanced attack that keeps the defense off balance. Denard has given Michigan fans some incredible highs and some incredible lows. It's quite entertaining on game day threads to see what side you're on.

It should be a good game. Pundits dismiss your record as it's deemed soft. Pundits dismiss UM b/c they've lossed to 2 undefeated teams and a third w/o our starting (or true backup) QB. One things clear. We BOTH hope NU gets beat this weekend :-)

This should be a damn good game! (If the B1G officials don't screw it up)

May the best team win.

Playing in the Big House will be a challenge.  But Fitz has a decent road record.

C'mon Maize, you've been in the B1G for so long you should know that NU = Northwestern. Unless you were purposely trying to disrespect us, in which case we should be calling you SCUM or something like that.

Yes, we both hope UNL is beaten this weekend.

I've come in peace not war. It's enough of that going on in Chiraq.

Why you would even presume I'd come here w the intentions to disrespect you is offensive. Do I post like an ohio fan?

I'd like to see Denard play... I honestly think he isn't that great of a QB. I think the speed of our LBs match up well against him.

Yeah... I could see this. I'm a little split. Definitely agree with LGIPurple in that our LBs are a whole different beast this year. Ariguzo has been solid in stopping the run game throughout the season, and of course the upperclassmen Nwabuisi and Proby as well.

Aside from Taylor Martinez, I don't think NU has faced a great – or even good – quarterback. Watching Devin's arm in brief bits against Minnesota has me more concerned about him as a passer.

Denard is a great (and better) player, of course. We just might match up better with Gardner. As well, Ibraheim Campbell picked off Denard twice last year. Those turnovers are key.

Re: Michigan fan here Post Rating (2 votes)

I said this in another thread over on TOS, but I really didn't think Gardner was all that impressive as a passer against Minnesota.  I saw (i) Dileo get lost behind the Minnesota secondary on a broken play, (ii) Gallon taking a screen and turning it into a 47-yard gain, (iii) Gallon making a heck of a play on a poorly-thrown ball for a TD, and (iv) a downfield pass to Roundtree where a Gopher DB badly misplayed the ball.  Take those plays away, and Gardner was something like 8/14 passing for 85 yards.

Obviously it's on the back half of our defense to prevent the kind of big plays I describe above (which has been an adventure at times for our group of DBs), but I think the Michigan WRs made Gardner look good.  The Michigan offense just didn't feel as dangerous with Gardner at the helm.

Moreover, Michigan became much more of a traditional pro-style I-formation team with Gardner at the helm.  I think this plays more into our defensive strengths as we have shown the ability to shut down this kind of rushing attack throughout the season.

I would MUCH rather see Gardner against Northwestern.

Re: Michigan fan here

In every play you named the QB did his job. On the Dileo pass he kept his eyes down the field while scrambling and threw a 50 yard strike. On the Roundtree pass he gave his WR a chance to make a play. Every pass won't be in the numbers. He threw a in stride pass to gallon down the sideline, and above all, he managed the game. I was impressed. We can talk about what ifs all day, but a more pertinent question is did he make the plays? In his first start on the road that was pretty darn good.

We want to be become more traditional. My fear wrt to Robinson is that you load the box and make him beat you w the pass. That's dangerous. His decision making is spotty at times. He's coming off injury and one wonders about the rust factor. Minnesota had no answer b/c they never knew if were running or passing. Bootlegs and PA under center seemed to really have them on their toes and our defense isn't giving up much.

Idk who the starter will be Sat. Hoke hasn't lost at home as the HC here. Under Fitzgerald you are 0-3 coming off bye weeks and 0-10 when having 7+ days to prepare. I'd be lying if I didn't say how much I like those odds.

I agree with you... to a point.  The Dileo catch was an example of poor defense from Minnesota, the Roundtree catch was a result of Stoudermire making a dreadful play on a ball he should have had that probably shouldn't have been thrown, and the Gallon TD ball probably shouldn't have been thrown.  The QB did his job in throwing the ball, but each were either a bad play from the defense, a spectacular play from the WR, or some combination of both.

I think your comment about game management is appropriate.  That seemed to be the role of the Michigan QB without Shoelace at the helm, when it felt like the QB could break a play downfield with his legs on every single snap.  The Michigan offense just didn't feel very threatening against Minnesota, instead morphing into a more methodical, pro-style offense.

And, as is often pointed out around here, the 0-3 stat that is often thrown around includes two losses to Michigan State in years where they went 9-4 and 10-2 in addition to our terrible collapse against Illinois last year.  MSU was ranked #19 and #8 for each loss and even Illinois was ranked #24 and playing pretty well before their epic collapse.  We all know our record of futility in bowl games... not much to explain there.

All in all, I expect this to be a tight one, but would have to give Michigan the slight edge due to homefield advantage and an extremely stingy run defense.

RE: Michigan fan here

I actually just read the box score, but I tend to believe that Devin has a little "Denard toss-it-and-pray" in him. I bet GCG is right about UM's offense. Michigan often gets away with it against bad secondaries. Hope our DBs play tall on Saturday. And I hope GCG is wrong about UM's defense... but its pretty clear that it will be the best D we've faced this year with the possible exception of Penn State.

RE: Michigan fan here

Lol at "toss and pray."

I'm a Michigan fan, I try to be objective, maybe that isn't possible. With that being said, when defensive lapses occur, due to the QB extending the play (which wasn't noted) the play still has to be made. He scrambled around for 9 SECONDS, and absolutely launched the ball to an open WR, in the endzone, and it was perfect. The pass to Roy wasn't great, but I sure do appreciate giving the WR a chance to make a play. It's a 50/50 play w even more probability of interference call than an interception.

Also a bit shocked by the preference to see Michigan under center. Most of the B1G is a spread. Seems like you'd want to play the offense you have the most familiarity w.

What are some game predictions? I think the line is 10 for Michigan. A bit high IMO, but not out the realm of possibility to win at home by 10. How do you view this playing out.

Our defense is legit. Better than PSU no question. Alabama and ND hurt our stats or they'd be even more gaudy. Still top 10 nationally I believe which again is pretty darn good considering we played the #4 schedule in the country.

Edit: 500+ views & only 14 replies?!? Tough crowd...

Come on now... it was a good play by Gardner to extend the play, but the throw was essentially a fair catch.

And we have shown the ability to shut down pro-style offenses (Iowa, Minnesota) while struggled against some spreads (Syracuse, Nebraska).  Would much rather see a pro-style opposition.
