Plus all the WBB teams that pay more or less than us for coaching know going in they are never going to make money.

Not everything is about the money.
if the AD's budget is tight still paying for people not working here & hasn't been real successful as a whole for the past 20 years, it kind of is.

If the budget is already that tight, then someone needs to start checking the books.  You don't want to end up like MD.  At ECU we were paying 3 football coaches, 2 baseball coaches and 2 basketball coaches all at the same time and still managed to operate just fine.  You guys probably bring in twice the money for athletics--surely you can afford a 247K payoff to one coach.  Personally I feel certain DY will can Kellie in about 2 months and hire a bigger name at a higher salary shortly thereafter.  Remember, she hired and paid Brenda Frese a ton at MD.
Exactly! I don't want us to get overextended paying for a non rev sport.

Based on what I read here, I'm not so sure I want to assume that. Then whatever the new coach costs on top of that.

Yea Debbie did hire Brenda and paid her well. Brenda then won a National Championship.

yeah that's like catching lightening in a bottle - with UConn, Stanford, Baylor & ND, I'm not sure many other schools have a shot.

UNC only has 1 loss this year but the Vols really hammered them. WBB now is a few elites & everybody else. That's why the men's NCAA tourney should be even more fun than usual this year. Heard Boeheim on with Colin today & they said 10 teams have a legit shot to win it this year.

That is also what a lot of fans have been saying about us in MBB. How many times have we heard on this very board we can't expect to compete with unc and duke?

Never, ever give up. That is why I go to games even though I know we may lose. With better weapons you can fight better and I know DY feels the same way.

We will find the right person and we will be part of the respected. There is no other way.

Right but State only had to really compete with 2 powerful teams in the ACC. We've seen how quickly the right coach changed that but even if DY gets a grand slam hire, I doubt we'd see such a quick turn around in WBB. There's just not as much top female talent to go around in WBB once the elite programs take the top talent.

Again, what's the rush if 1 year saves the school a quarter mil?

One prime example for me would be GG. If you can get her now but a year later you can't, then there is no waiting. IMO she would be a grand slam hire.

yeah, timing for a top coach might be a factor.

Has she done much @ UT? She sure hasn't replicated the success she had @ Duke in Austin.

This is my opinion, but I think she underestimated the challenge of the geography. She went into high expectations to compete head to head with Texas A&M, Baylor and Oklahoma. Recruiting is fierce for the top Texas high school talent and she had no one on her staff with any connections to that talent pipeline. Kim Mulkey effectively owns the top AAU output in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area. As you probably know, Gail was not fired nor was she in any immediate danger of being fired. She removed herself from the job because she did not think she was living up to the expectations. The word out is she wanted some time to re-evaluate what she was going to do next. How much time and what she wants to do is not known, but it is not that far fetched for her to be a real possibility for us. If she wants another year off, that may work out well. If she is ready sooner, waiting may be too later. This is something thet should be approached. She ought to know our territory very well.

Coach G is out of Coaching this year after UT fired her last year.  They had 4 straight NCAA 1st round exits and she stated that she was "burned out" and needed to get away from Bball for awhile.  I would think she would get back into coaching next year or not at all.  Another reason to move on things this year.

Thanks, that's interesting. Yeah, that might be perfect timing. If a name like that is out there a year from now, it's worth waiting for over someone who "may" work out?

I would post it here if I could, but James asked DY in the premium interview he did with her. The number was pretty shocking. The majority of it was not salaries. It was for facilities, iirc.

I'm going to post this very small excerpt. Mods, lease remove if you see fit...

The athletic program is carrying a very large debt. I inherited the debt and we’ll work through it. $51.9 million as of January 18 which was the last update that I have and the Wolfpack Club is carrying $17.4.

Projected starting line-up in the game notes is that Breezy will start in place of Barrett, like last game.

GoPack.com: Wolfpack tangles with Terrapins

Game #18: NC State (8-9, 0-5 ACC) at No. 10/10 Maryland (13-3, 4-1 ACC)
Thursday, Jan. 17, 2013 • 8:30 p.m. ET
College Park, Md. • Comcast Center (17,950)

TV: Regional Sports Network/ESPN3 Where to #watchACC
TV Crew: Mike Hogewood and Stephanie Ready

Radio: 88.1 FM WKNC
Radio Crew: Patrick Kinas and Paige Woodard

GoPack All-Access: Listen

Also from the game notes:
Wolfpack Handed Tough Draw to open ACC Schedule
NC State is 0-5 in the ACC, but a deeper look shows that the team was handed strong marching orders out of the gate.

If you take into account this Sunday's matchup with No. 22 Florida State, the Wolfpack will play all five teams ranked this week in the national polls in its first seven league contests. No other member can say that, with Georgia Tech the only closest competitor with four early-season ranked opponents.

Digging more, the combined record of NC State's first seven opponents in ACC play is a staggering 25-9 (does not include Virginia Tech at Duke on Wednesday) leading into Thursday's game at Maryland.

And one final note, a glance at the standings show that NC State will have drawn the top-7 teams in the league in its first seven games. Duke won't play an ACC ranked team until its ninth league game against Miami on Jan. 31.

So even those that defended LF were wrong about what sort of a manager he was when it came to $.

How many times did we hear the NCSU admin is OK as long as they're in the black financially? That was a lie too? It makes sense, Pack sports sucked so how could they make much/any $?

His last hire wasn't good & now this. The more that leaks out about his tenure the worse it gets. And recall how many people claimed winning wasn't all that important? Look @ their bottom line in red ink & say that again?

And Oblinger didn't care either?

In my area it is on Fox Sports South 646.  It would be great if the ladies could do a pay back for us.

Game time. They just showed part of Frese's pre-game talk. She's a good motivator. What was also interesting was that two scores were written on a whiteboard behind her as she addressed the team. The scores for State's game against Duke and UNC: 67-57 and 70-66.

Announcers also talking about how State has played 5 ranked teams in past 7 games and has 24th toughest schedule in nation.

State hanging in there at 20-12...but they seem to suffer what the men had happen to them last nite. Lot of shots hit the rim or the back of the rim but just won't go in.
