seniorwolf60 wrote: I don't think anyone can have a nationally recognized WBB program without a solid dose of talent. Even with the top 100 listings each year, there probably aren't more than 3 or 4 who can join good teams and be impact players their first year. There just is not that much overall top talent available. Once the top 5 or 6 teams in the country finish selecting the talent they want, the competition for the rest begins to get real tough. Sometimes there is a regional factor where a very talented player wants to stay close to home. But we are totally out of that consideration due to the proximity of Duke and UNC. So if we don't have any advantage in attracting talent because of geography, and we don't have an advantage because of being a perennial top program, how are we going to attract the talent to compete with our peers? It has to be in the coaching and the support for the program. There was a time when Baylor was not where they are. There was a time when Notre Dame was not where they are, so program turnarounds are not impossible. But no matter who we might hire, we are not going to vault to the top immediately. However, we should not be in a position of slowly sinking to the near bottom like we are doing now. We are in danger of starting the conference schedule with a 0-7 record unless a completely reformed team shows up.
That's so true & why it's silly that the women's NCAA tourney is as big as the men's is. Men's BB was pretty big a long time before it moved from 32 to 48 to 64. The level of talent dictated a move up from 32 but all in the name of fairness, the women needed 64/68 too - whether the 2 talent pools were equal or not.

People talk about the lousy teams that make up the final 68 in the men's tourney, think about the POS teams in the women's game beyond their top 32.

Headed back to Reynolds tomorrow night for another 2 hours of heartbreak I think.  Going because I am a State fan (duty) and not because I like where the WBB program is at/headed (delight).  Right now I am just hoping we can stay close like in the Duke game and avoid getting trounced.  If the group that showed up (and I just can't use the word "played") for the Wake game shows up tomorrow it could get UGLY fast.

FWIW, every game seems to just make the inevitable more certain relative to Ms. Harper's tenure as our WBB coach.  I just can't see her hear next year....particularly with the extra $$$ that came back into the athletics budget with the TOB/Tenuta decision at UVA freeing up some cash for faciliate the buyout.

Aint looking good. Maybe Harper can rally these girls and put together a few ACC wins. She's going to have to show something to keep her job.

She's going to need more than just a few ACC wins to keep her job. I'm thinking NIT at a minumum.

I hope we are making contact with Goestenkors.  I know she'd be spendy, but we just saved a ton of money by switching to Gieco...I mean, on the TOB buyout deal..

She'd probably take a discount to return to the triangle and have another chance to compete in the ACC.

But, this may not be the route Yow goes. She might want a young and up and coming coach from a smaller school. Who knows. Gott didn't fit that description.

N&O: Kastanek ready for Heels

“It’s amazing this is my last time playing Carolina here,” said Kastanek, a Nebraska native. “Being a part of the Wolfpack. you always want to beat Carolina. Just to wear the Wolfpack Red and play for this university mean a lot.”

“Marissa has been a leader ever since she set foot on this campus, and now she has the senior status,” said coach Kellie Harper, who solidified Kastanek as her first recruit when she came from Western Carolina to replace the late Kay Yow. “When I asked her what she wanted this year, she said ‘I want my teammates to go to the NCAA tournament.’ And for her to focus on what she wanted her teammates to get, that’s a leader. To me she would be an easy leader to follow.”

“I wanted to play soccer at Carolina,” she said. “My closet was like baby blue everything. One Christmas, Santa brought me so many Carolina shirts and shorts and Mia Hamm stuff. I was probably the biggest Carolina fan in Nebraska until I decided to concentrate on basketball.”

I hope Marissa burned all of that ****.

"It’s amazing this is my last time playing Carolina here,” said Kastanek

Well that is another big reason I hope we pull off a W tonight. Kastanek has been an absolute joy to watch compete these last four years. One of my favorite State WBB players ever.

I will be there.

6:32 left 1st half...NCState leads 19-17. UNC at the line for two shots when play resumes.

Kastanek sporting a nasty shiner after the battle with Duke last week.

Wolfpack has turned the ball over on three straight possessions.

Before they called out the Pack's starting lineup, they played a clip from the movie "Miracle'" where coach gives his it's your time, now take it speech.

Game is pretty sloppy, but State showing the promise I think we expected to see more of this season.

Good crowd, too. Of course.

And an amusing tidbit: Looks like Hatchell has her own designer shoes now, too. Carolina blue high heel shoes.

3:54 left...UNC leads 24-21. Gatling at the line for two shots when play resumes.

Wish the ladies would be more careful with the basketball. I don't know how many turnovers but it's gotta be at least 8.
