need to point to themselves, not teammates or other people
need to look to themselves to improve individually

Avent??? With the team he's got this year and after reaching a Super Regional last season?
Yep.  Evidently he and Yow are not big fans of one another.  Plus, Yow is all about having her people in positions.  Plus he has yet to produce a championship of any kind or make the College World Series.  If he doesn't build on what he had last year, he could be released.

I gave it a listen. I think Paige said as much as she could say given her position.

I do disagree a bit with her about the offense and that they just haven't run it enough to see if it works. At this point in the season, and with some of the teams they've already faced, I think they should know what's working and what's not working and be making some tweaks. I'd love to see what the team would do if Brown started at the point, and Goodwin-Coleman took on a more Scott Wood-like role. Goodwin-Coleman is not shooting as well as she has in the past right now, but I'd like to see what would happen if Brown was given the opportunity to completely manage the offense.

This was discussed a few pages back. General idea was that she should be first person called if a coaching change is made, but State probably wouldn't be able to offer enough money and she probably wouldn't be interested in State anyway. Who knows.
My opinion of GG is due to her failure at Texas, her stock is down.   I don't think big-time programs are fighting for her services.  Thus, her price may not be as high as one would expect.  This is not to say she isn't a good coach. I just think Texas and GG wasn't a good match.

You never know until you ask.

Hell, I can think of several women whose company I had the pleasure of "enjoying", all because I just asked if they'd be interested.

This is kinda what I was thinking too.  I don't know if I'd call what happened in Tejas a "failure" but she sure did not replicate what she did at Duke, and it clearly wore on her.

I'd like to think she'd jump at the chance to get back to the same area she knows.

Any idea how many years are left on the contract?

Harper may not be the person for the job, but can we really afford to pay Fowler, TOB, Sid, and Harper?

me too, how much should NCSU or any school really spend on something few care that much about? Yes, we know we have to have it due to the law but no need to go all out $ wise either.

Will be interesting to see how this plays out to the end of the season, but (unfortunately) right now the trajectory doesn't look good....for the team...or for Coach Harper.

I hate to see money wasted on half hearted approaches to anything. The school is obviously stuck with paying for something that is not being delivered as anticipated ..... again. If we have to let the contract run out, then we might as well not recruit until then. Just fill out the roster with walk ons until we get someone who can recruit. We are going to get clobbered in a lot of games anyway. Revise the schedule to cut down on travel. In the meantime, maybe our AD can plan the next chapter of WBB to be more successful.

Also, we might would have to pick up a year of her Tejas contract.  I think she had 2 years left when she resigned, and since she was not fired, we'd likely owe Tejas a buyout of her last year.

My gut feeling is that if we would have played our very best game of the year, and if all of the players had given 110%, we would have lost last night by 15-18.  If we would have played our worst game of the year we would have.....uh, wait a minute, we did play our worst game of the year.

I'm fine with waiting until April 2014 with no extensions. We've spent enough money, so let's not waste it on buying out the final year of a non-revenue sports coach, no matter how bad her performance has been.

From a practical point of view, this makes some sense. I guess the real question is how much importance is the success of this particular program to the overall goals of N C State athletics. The conference programs that are ahead of us now have invested more heavily in those programs recently. Duke and UNC spend way more on their programs. Virginia, Miami, GT, and FSU are now ahead of us too. Notre Dame joins the conference shortly and they are another strong opponent. What is the roster going to look like in 2014? Our recruiting last year and this year has been pathetic. With a lame duck coach, it will only get worse. So in 2014, we may not be able to beat any of the local high school teams, regardless of who's coaching. See the dilemma?

Rex,

I don't know if you are serious with this question but the answer is that she has fired several coaches before their contracts expired...Sidney and TOB, to name two that we care about.

Yow is going to have to do one of two things at the end of this season: fire Harper or extend her contract. You can't leave a coach hanging as a lame duck - it shuts off recruiting. Nobody will sign up for 4 years with a coach on the last contract year. Harper would be guaranteed to fail. So, it's going to be either more time to try or one-year buyout. Considering she wasn't extended last year (not that she deserved it), I think the decision has already been made.

Discernment is a critical aspect of this recruiting art. Being able to find the right talent for the position with the academic and social skills needed plus the prospects ability to blend with others and ultimately be a part of a team. I wonder sometimes how a head (football coach) especially is able to properly blend not only players but also coaches into a well oiled machine. A gift not many have -

Not sure that a single year remaining is going to truly hurt recruiting given that we've struggled to get top tier folks in during Harper's tenure as it is.

Does anyone have an answer about the non-revenue coaches contracts?  I know Debbie has hired several new coaches (such as wrestling and women's soccer).  Do we know if those previous coaches' contracts were up when they were let go or if we had to buy them out?
