Rivera is most likely done. Bring in Cowher.  The Panthers could use Cotchery too.

They need to trade for Santana Moss so they can have a nice midget bookend for Steve Smith.

Nobody, and I mean nobody gets more excuses made for him than Cam Newton.

I think what Newton did last year was largely the result of smoke and mirrors, but it don't take NFL defensive coordinators long to figure that stuff out. On the other sideline, NFL DC's have been trying to solve Peyton Manning for over a decade, with very little success. That's because you can do everything right against him and he'll still get the ball out quicker than you can get to him, and put it in the one place where his guy can get it and the defender can't. There is no gameplan against that.

And yes, it is fair to compare him to Manning because Newton was drafted first overall, same as Manning 14 years ago. If Newton does not become a franchise QB and lead the team for the next 15 years, he is a bust. He can't just eventually become a middle of the road quarterback some day, you don't pick guys like that first in the draft.

The fact is, Newton is not a good NFL quarterback. Whether he can become one is highly debatable, but he seems to be getting worse, not better. He doesn't throw the ball accurately, he doesn't read defenses very well, and he isn't a leader. That is the trifecta of attributes a franchise NFL quarterback must have, and so far he's 0 for 3.

Re: 2012 Carolina Panthers Thread (2-7) 11/18 Buccaneers

Best comparison for Newton as a success is the Colts rookie QB Luck.
The Panthers would have scooped up Luck in a heartbeat if he had entered the draft last season. Luck just seems to have a knack for winning, because the Colts roster is not a lot stronger than the Carolina roster is. At this point, Luck appears to be the next great young QB with RG3 as the runner up. Only time will tell, but in who would you rather have on your roster for the next 3 season?

Getting sacked 7 times and hurried 10 + is def an excuse..we all know Manning would be Jesus even with that pressure..people kill me. He didn't play awful more than he was getting killed 2 seconds after the snap...and the amazing staff decided to stop throwing screens that were getting 10+ yards when Denver blitzed..which was almost every down. His accuracy is even worse when he isn't pressured. Unforced errors are his problem. He just gets even worse when everything isn't perfect. I've seen him stand in the pocket with perfect protection and one-hop balls or throw them 5 feet over the receiver's all the time.

Peyton doesn't get sacked very often because he is decisive and gets rid of the ball quickly - something he has in common with the other elite QB's in the league.

but Brees' first 2 seasons... 27 TDs, 31INTs...averaged about 3400 yards and mid 50% completion percentage. Guess who has better stats and is being tossed aside so early in his career...

What the hell was Thomas Davis supposed to do. Not hit the guy. He didn't hit him helmet to helmet, it was shoulder to helmet. And that was because the guy tried to duck the hit. Not only that it wasn't a catch. The ball was rolling on the ground. Yet they still called it a catch. Typical NFL BS.

Ron Rivera is a former Norv Turner assistant. Coaches like he, NT, Chan Gailey, and Jason Garrett are cut from the same cloth.
