Bad loss for NCState. Gutsy effort, tho. Wake outplayed us down the stretch.

Wake came in to the match 2-9 in the ACC. The match was billed as a fundraiser for breast cancer research in honor of head coach Heather Holmes who is battling the disease. They probably picked this match to do this due to Kay Yow's public battle with breast cancer. Coach Holmes has been known to leave her chemo treatments and go straight to practice or a match. I suspect it was a very emotional scene tonight.

3 regulars with negative hitting percentages. Yikes! I suspect we're going to receive some payback on the road from here on out. Hope we can stay strong at home and get an upset or two.

Re: Wolfpack Volleyball 2012 (19-5,9-4) 11/2 #12 FSU 7pm
Looks like the team is coming back to earth after an outstanding start. I'm guessing we finish 11-9 in the ACC, and out of the NCAAs. The only remaining wins on the schedule I see are Virginia at home and maybe Virginia Tech. If we can't beat Duke/Wake on the road, no way we will win the road contests at GT and Clemson, the home dates with FSU/Miami, or the return matchup with UNC (UNC dusted both Duke and Wake in straight sets this weekend to move past us into 3rd place in ACC).
Is lack of quality depth an issue with us, causing us to wear down a little as season goes on?

Is lack of quality depth an issue with us, causing us to wear down a little as season goes on? No other way to look at this past weekend other than to say it was disastrous. While you're right about the schedule, the tone might be just a bit too much doom and gloom (no need for that...yet). Also, I don't think depth has anything to do with it. Just need to remember that it's a long season (20 ACC matches) and nearly all regulars aside from Cyr are just sophomores. Earlier in the thread when I broke down some of these upcoming weekends, I pointed to this past one, specifically Duke. I didn't expect the Wake loss, nor did I (or any of us for that matter) project how emotional that match would be given the cancer theme of the night. Wake gutted out the win for their coach -- good for them, bad for us. I did worry about the Duke match though. While that team is still down relative to past seasons, they're still good on paper and hungry to scrap some wins to salvage the season. I didn't see either match, but based on the results and seeing that State had leads in a few of the games it lost in both matches, I'd say it's a case of shooting one's self in the foot. The big problem is that it doesn't get any easier, as you pointed out. I still don't think we'll beat FSU, but I still think a win at home against Miami is possible. I wish the Miami match was first because I don't know how the team will respond psychologically to 3 straight losses, but we'll see. On the road at Clemson and at GaTech is pretty much gonna suck, but IMO that's the weekend we'll really see what this team is made of. Even with losses to both FSU and Miami, if they can win those two road matches against Clemson and GaTech, that should ensure a 4th place finish in the ACC. And let's face it, that's something NO ONE projected for this team.
