We're approaching the 2nd half of the conference season.

The 64 team tournament will be announced on Nov. 25th.(in a just over 5 weeks).

(7)PAC12-Stanford, UCLA, Oregon, Wash., USC, Oregon St., ASU(?),
(9)Big 10-Neb., Penn St., Minn., Purdue, Ohio St., Michigan, MSU, N'western(?), Wisc.(?)
(6)WCC-BYU, San Diego, Pepperdine, St. Mary's, Santa Clara, San Francisco(?)
(6)SEC-Florida, Kentucky, Tenn., Texas A&M, Arkansas, Auburn(?)
(4)Big 12-Texas, Kansas St., Oklahoma, Iowa St.
(4)ACC-Miami, FSU, UNC, NC State, GT(?)
(3)MVC-Creighton, Northern Iowa, Wichita St.
(2)Big East-Louisville, Marquette, Notre Dame(?)
(1)WAC-Hawaii
(1)Sun Belt-WKU
(1)A10-Dayton/VCU
(1)MAC-Ohio/Bowling Green/W.Michigan
(1)Big West-Pacific/UCSB/LBSU
(1)MWC-CSU/Fresno St.,/New Mexico
(1)SoCon-Furman/CofC

Conference Tournament Champions
(16) Big Sky, CUSA, Southland, Summit, CAA, Ivy, OVC, Horizon, ASun, America East,
Big South, MEAC, NEC, MAAC, Patriot, SWAC

There are more that 64 teams listed above. If the season ended today, I don't think there would be any doubt about NC State being in the NCAA tournament.  Half the ACC season remains.  Winning on the road at VPI and UVa last w/e was important.  It will be that way for the rest of the season.  We're fun to watch.

Honestly, it's amazing that we're even having this conversation with respect to where the program was just a few years ago.  The players and staff deserve a tremendous amount of credit for all their hard work turning things around so quickly.  Hopefully we'll have good crowds in Reynolds this w/e to support them.  They've earned it.
Interesting. Illinois is ranked 25th with a 9-9 record but isn't listed as a potential NCAA Tournament team.

RE: Wolfpack Volleyball 2012 (17-3,7-2) 10/19 Boston College

I noticed that as well. Illinois is kinda like Duke, only better and in a much better volleyball conference. They're young and they lost a lot of talent from last year, when they were NCAA runners-up. They're very good on paper in that every starter was at least a top 50 (or so) recruit, but it hasn't translated to results on the court yet and they're getting murdered by the BigTen schedule. The big question for them is whether or not they can stay above .500 overall. Nearly all of their losses have been to ranked teams, and they're probably getting a bit of a free pass because they were in the championship match from last year. I'm not sure how much longer they get that free pass though. At some point, you just have to win, no matter how tough your opponent.

Illinois is going to be interesting to watch.  They benched their redshirt senior setter last Saturday night and took the redshirt off of a freshman and were able to stop a three game skid to defeat Michigan State (after being down 2-).  Although I think their bigger problem is passing, not setting, it worked for them.  I wonder how much affect the loss to Penn State (after leading 14-10 in the fifth) followed up by an abysmal performance on national TV at Michigan will affect their psyche the rest of the season.

Re:Illinois

I actually had them on the list when I first put it together.  Then Edited the post.

They burned the redshirt on their freshmen setter vs. Michigan St. this past w/e.
Worked out well for the final 3 games of the match as they came back to win, 3-2.

Good grief, they played for the title last year.  I'm just not sure they can run the gauntlet
of the Big 10 over the final 6 w/e (12 matches) of the season.  If they do, they'll certainly earn their bid.

Are there chemistry issues?  Have the coaches lost the team?  It will be interesting to watch, for sure. 6 home matches. 6 away.  4 matches against teams below them in the standings.  8 matches with teams ahead of them at the moment.

eek

So I took them out.

I actually did a double-take when I saw that Wake had beaten Duke.  Man, the Dookies are just having a nightmarish season.  What in the world happened?

Definitely need to continue have good turnouts at Reynolds.  We definitely have a home court advantage when that place is rocking.

I seriously love this team.  They now expect to win. Even if they dig themselves a hole they never, ever give up.  They always think they can come back and win, and they have mostly have.  And remember, there's only 2 seniors on the team (although Megan Cyr will be tough to replace).

Wow, we're talking about volleyball mid-week.  The times they are a-changing.  Sure hope Bunn and company like Raleigh.

That home UNCW match(RPI of 251, last in their conference, we're playing them at home)....

down 2 games.... down several match points in the third game/set ... Cyr's leadership.... Kearn's with that "kick save" in the 4th set...

To come back and win that one.... then knock off Carolina in the next match to start the ACC schedule...

....and the crowd support at the Carolina match....

Have we ever had a season volleyball thread that reached 15 (going on 16+) pages before the season was 2/3 over?

I don't think it's chemistry or the coaches.  I compared them to Duke for a reason in that they lost some very key players from last season, and the returning starters are still very young and just not putting everything together with the newbies.

For starters, Illinois graduated Coleen Ward and Michelle Bartsch, who combined for 39 of the team's 59 kills in last year's NCAA championship match against UCLA.  That's 2/3 of your offense gone.  Two other starters are now sophomores, Anna Dorn and Liz McMahon.  And then they return senior MB Erin Johnson, and their senior S Annie Luhrsen, who apparently isn't connecting with this year's young team as well as she did with Ward and Bartsch last year.

So this team is just puzzling to me.  You've got a senior S and senior MB returning.  But an experienced MB is useless on offense if you can't pass the ball.  Both Dorn and McMahon spent time with USA Volleyball women's junior programs, and were very highly rated coming out of high school.  But Dorn is a MB (again, useless if the team can't pass) and McMahon is 6'6" and doesn't play back row or pass much.  Ironically, they have one of the best Liberos in the country in Jennifer Beltran, another who spent time with USA Volleyball junior national team.

By the way, as I type this I just saw they defeated Northwestern tonight in a 5-set match.  So maybe it really is the setter.  Can they turn it around with a freshman setter?  The rest of the starters are 2 other freshman (who replaced Ward and Bartsch), 2 sophomores, a senior, and a junior libero.

For reference, you can win with youth.  Stanford was in the Top 10 of the AVCA all year last season, and graduated basically no one.  Literally, every starter returned including 2 All-Americans in Rachel Williams and Carly Wopat.  They hauled in 5 freshmen, all of whom were high school All-Americans and all of them ranked in the Top 15.  Four of those freshmen are starting (including setter Madi Bugg who played high school ball here at Cardinal-Gibbons), and just about their entire staring lineup from last year are now backups.  They're currently ranked #1 RPI and #2 AVCA.

Anyway, enough about other teams.  Go Pack!
